I am a first time dm running blending LMOP into my homebrew for a team of first time players. We already did a minor arc of my homebrew before I decided to work this module in, however, and the party is already at level 4. This means I've been looking for fun ways to beef up the content. I had a feeling this creature presented some great opportunities to do that, but I knew nothing about them and the MM doesn't give you much to work with. Now I'm REALLY excited to run Redbrand Hideout next session. There are both some really interesting secrets and a couple of nice magic items in my party. This could be chaos and I love it. Haha

I recently had a big boss fight that ended a major arc of my campaign. Up until then, I experimented with a mechanic for introducing multiple phases to boss fights since my players are able to take them out very quickly with their use of control spells and solid damage. The last fight was one of the most enjoyable since it actually had 3 phases, all of which used everything they had learned up until then and actually threatened everyone (not just the tank). Overall, they are only level 10 and dealt over 600 points of damage amongst the 3 phases with 3 PCs and 2 NPCs (one was purely support and the other used to be a PC until our friend couldnt commit the time). Plus, it put an end to a hated NPC and provided that much needed catharsis. Luckily, I didn't need to fudge the HP to ensure the boss wasn't killed by and NPC

This was very helpful! Some of the lessons learnt were new to me, but some also reiterated important things I should keep in mind for a big boss fight. I really feel that first story, cause it’s the type of stuff that I’ve tried too as a dm, to disappointing effect. Not saying it’s impossible to pull off, but twists like that can feel unfair as a player.

Having each player prep a backup character and a oneshot might help encourage more dungeon masters, and the backup character could join the main campaign if their first one perish. That or some random ethereal jaunts, spellplague/whatever hook tying the characters together from the start.

A final battle against an ancient shadow dragon vs a multitude of allies from two years of play... They had pinned it down in a cave....and ROT GRUBS thrown by an NPC accidentally crit..... burrowed and killed it with little ceremony. Well, shit.

Love how you send out a questionnaire to your players & ask which of 3 of 6 types of players they are. I would pick: cruncher, role player, & munchkin.

If all the mentors in the hero's journey went to kill a great evil but were defeated. The party, being their students, now have a great enemy to rail against after first gaining in power. The diversity of the mentors would also Account for that of the students.

I was planning on using them as my patron of my warlock. I am pretty new to this so I am trying to learn about them. My character is a water genasi who makes a pact to save his crew and ship from an unprecidented storm.

Well, I'm currently painting a Nothic miniature I recently picked up for an upcoming campaign. I was going to just use it as a random monster hiding out in a dungeon library, but now I'm going to try and do something more interesting with it. The only issue I can see is that it only speaks Undercommon, and I don't know yet if my players would have a means to understand it. If they don't, I think I'd maybe give it Elvish (same alphabet) or something, as well.

The MMotM version lacks the compfort and the control weather from this version, which is a bummer, but does make them a little less OP in the nautical campaign I am putting on for my table, so I don't mind. Letting the party be exceptionally uncompfortable during a storm while this guy stands at the helm drenched in water, oar and eyes burning like beacons through the dark as if its any other day, entierly unbothered by the 60 foot waves is a great image in my mind.
