This is pieced together footage salvaged from an old VHS tape. There's not much race footage, but for anyone that attended this race it may bring back some fond memories of this weekend in August 1980. Notable BMX racers I spotted in the video are Greg Esser, Heidi Mirisola (Hutch), Eddy King & Mat Harris (both on Torker). There's a glimps of what appears to be the pros going into the first tur...

South Park BMX indoor races 1980

More indoor South Park BMX races. On this day, New Jersey riders David Scruggs and Danny Nolte came into town. These boys could really fly and needless to say, they both won their classes. The following year, Danny went on to become NBL National #1 and I (Jim Stinson) would receive Nat #7. David Scrugg's father would start his own BMX company called Mr. Stix and the bike was called the 'Wedge' ...

Darren Wilson - 85 South Park Cycle Craft national main event
I was at the 1984 war of the stars at that track, won the B pro class!
I was a racer that day. Wow a long time ago
Fantastic!
I was there --- raced the entire summer of 1980 to make it to Evansville. I wish I had those pictures! This is a great memory!
This is great! My last race was at this track one year before. That year's NBL #1, the late Sal Zeuner raced that day. He made the cover of BMXA that year.
Do you have any video of the guys lake jumping in the park that weekend?
Wow! My last race was on this track, all previous were at North Park. I think it was an NBL national in 1979. BMX pioneer and champion, the late Sal Zeuner raced that day. I still have a 3ft trophy that I went home with. For 44 years, I thought the Mongoose long frame I used was named after BMX legend Stu Thomsen. Recently I was lucky enough to be able to ask Stu if that was the case, and it was not. He said that Skip Hess made frames with longer front ends for taller guys like Stu, John George and maybe Danny Oakley. Thanks for posting!
Dude, that was so awesome to watch
White trash..
I was there, this track was a 10 minute bike ride from my house when I was a kid
Thank you for posting this. Pat is my uncle. I miss him. Some of my best memories of my time with him are playing on the half pipe in his yard or playing drums before breakfast. He was the best!
Nice work!! Epic control, love the style out of the 1st berm too
Wow man. This stuff is stellar
Great times

That was Southpark pa..I got 2nd at the last National I ever raced .then 2 weeks later I was under the knife fighting for my life with Crohns disease and told I had cancer after they removed a softball size mass from my stomach..and I asked jesus christ to take care of me..I HAD NO CANCER!!! AMEN..
Do you have a video of Steph racing
Hey! Burdette Park BMX Marketing and Social Coordinator here! Ive been coming to the track since 2001! We are doing an old school segment this year to bring in the community more for those that aren't aware we are even in the area! Can we use this on our social media? This is awesome!
Is this video the coke classic?
Holy shit. I bet nobody went to Joe’s bike shop even back then.
That damn flattop was their on the 3rd run forever. They changed it a few years ago. “Riders Ready Watch the Gate Dooo Dooo Dooo Dooo”

Hi Jim! Somewhere, I have a box of Super 8’s from my father of you and me. By far, you were responsible for pushing me to the next level back in the “Hey Days!” I’m grateful your father took the time and expense to film all of us. -rocketman m....., one of your #1 fans, (provided you were safely-BEHIND ME:-)!
Todd Corbitt! ⚡💯⚡

was rick leonard in this video
I was a 13 novice and made it to the main. Any chance I could get you to publish?
I was 13 novice and made it to the main. I jumped the double and landed on the dude in second. Big wipe out . Finished 7th
do you have footage from 1985 or 1986 War of The Stars?
Thanks for this video,I am in the last race(15x main) where Mike Poulsen won,I came in 4th....this is the first video or picture I have seen since 1980.....I was Sponsored by the local Schwinn bikeshop(Supreme Schwinn) it brought back lots of good memories,Todd Taylor
I raced there also in the 70's.I have some great memories. The one that comes to mind is during a national there I was doing 360's off that jump that was on the far right side off track. . I remember it vividly as the announcer was pissed as most of the crowd was watching us instead of the races. I was pulling off 6 foot high 360's and pancakes and many 540,s and riding back down the jump. I also remember at that race Tim Judge came over and was pulling off even' higher one footed pancakes(had to show me off) .i also remember the next Sunday that jump was cut in half so we couldnt do it again.
And look at the old Sears logo in the background! Looks like the one on one of my old TV's!
It's cool to see how different this area was back then.
Eddy King needs your help. go to www.onlinecycling.com/#!promo1/c1hwe and buy a king eddy t shirt all profits go to the Eddy King foundation
I was there too! I raced I think 17X back then.
Awesome :)
My brother and I raced at quite a few War of the Stars, But never made it to Indiana. Brings back a lot of good memories .Thanks for posting this
At first I had a Mongoose with Motomags-then I added box bars and an FMF fork. The bike was heavy for racing, but virtually unbreakable!! I remember bending the original pedals on a big jump. But nothing else bent, although the Ashtabula stem wouls slip a little bit. Then the CYC Stormer came along. It had red Tuffs with Nankang tires, and a set of Speedo forks (remember those, with the dual dropout setup?) Then I added a set of Redline V-bars,red Oakley grips, and a 44t Addicks sprocket.
I pretty much dominated the Wheelie contest at all the events along with my best bud Jimmy Stewart.Dana (Dremel) Nesiti ruled the Jumping contest with Jimmy & I to take 2nd & 3rd. Have you ever visited the Vintage BMX website? A lot of North Park racers are members there, check it out sometime, GREAT memories! And I stand corrected I meant to say "THANK YOU" to Heinze and his son Mark for creating all the memories I will have for a lifetime.
Cool! I had a "Stroker with Tuff Wheels and then a set of MX60's and then was sponsored by DG and had one of there Yellow Frames with a 3 Pc. Al. Cranks set up (super light). I bent the DG frame in the rear the very first jump of the jumping contest (My main jumping rig had issues with the rear wheel moving on impact so I had to substitute it with the DG set up)
This video is AWESOME!!!!!!! I remember every part of this track-the big banked turn, the dropoff, and the jumping contest held in the middle of it. I had at first a Mongoose with heavy Motomags, then I bought a CYC Stormer-red,with red Tuff wheels,at your store in Squirrel Hill. I originally wanted a DG Rooster, but the CYC was a little less expensive-and just as much fun!!! Thanks for the memories....
I was lucky to be one of the "Original" Wheels Unlimited Team Members that helped build this track! I just stumbled onto this video, what a BLAST from the past! There are A LOT of great memories from here! Wheels Unlimited (Heinze and Steve) did a lot to make all this happen, I will never forget these days. We were the true pioneers of the sport. Any other "Original" team members out here?
I was at this race back in the day, took 3rd 14 Expert...Love the good old day!
awe that was cute!
@bvonmoss Yes thats Larry Pacifico. He now lives in Florida. His son Larry still lives in the Western NY area and Operates/Owns Honey's Pizza. Racing back then was such a blast, Mr. Pacifico was so good for the sport and he supported my parents , Bill & Mary Ann Robins, in so many ways. Joe.
good job!
