L’ape (female, singular), l’api (plural), if the noun starts with a vowel, the La ape is merged into L’ape. The a must be pronounced like e.g. in master, the e like e.g. the e in “end”, and please make it sound Italian. It was designed as a working vehicle, busy as a bee.
