I've had mine since 2008 and I will NEVER part with it. That rich , dark Red finish that fades into black. I've had it "converted " down into a 4 string , for years. After an unfortunate C string decided to let go. All the hardware is still with it to put it back as a 5 string. But My "Workhorse", (as you so solidly described them, ) Has been a Righteously Loyal Trooper. Has nae' let me down yet. I've adapted to the thicker neck of a 5 string, because it allows me to set and balance my thumb along the top of the fretboard for better ,overall Feel and grip. At least in my own personal experience. It's the only Bass guitar I own , and I've a collection of 10 guitars and 4/4 Student sized cello. Only thing I've Ever had to say against it , was and is that it is a rather Heavy piece. At least in my own personal opinion. I don't play standing up very long with it. Absolute trudge task on my back and shoulders. 😣😧😩. So hard to play standing, long periods for me ,because of an ATV accident when I was 15, That caused injuries to my arm, Shoulders, neck muscles, and back. Add overall aging and various other injuries to that? Definitely not a teenager anymore She's a bit a of a workout standing up. I've only Just recently entertained getting another bass guitar to compliment this one , and it Honestly Might actually come down to the little Epiphone viola style. Nice , Light and , Robust, and Reliable. Iconic shape, just as the Squier/ Fender styles were and are. And they Honestly are straight up Cool. I can appreciate everything instrument wise from Hank Williams Martin, To Don Helms ' " Old Red" Gibson Console Grande Steel. To Paul's Hofner and Rickenbackers, to Jerry Douglas' Dobro, to Slash's Les Paul's, Dimebag's Deans to the Multi MILLION dollar Stradivarius Cellos that Yo-Yo Ma has played. My tastes are All over. 😅. But for me personally? I've had the best luck with stuff in the $150- $830 (after tax) dollar range. Also, Nothing wrong with buying used and giving love to something that somebody obviously took care of,but couldn't hang onto anymore. (Some you feel sorry for , and buy to see if you can fix, but THAT CAN potentially be costly. One should do proper homework before a purchase like that, to be fair.)
