Restored 81 xj550 motorcycle. Bought as a non runner and had to rebuild carbs, replace chain/sprockets, wheel and head bearings, rebuilt forks, upgraded to ATC fuse box, custom burnt orange paint

Thanks for the video!! Just bought mine. The exact same year, make and model and it wants to start and when it does… it runs good for a few minutes but I have to keep hitting the throttle or it dies. Same with when I go to brake I have to hit the throttle or it’ll die… any advise? Thanks!
It could be several things, but probably the carburetors are dirty and out of sync and need to be cleaned and adjusted to pull equal vacuum at idle.

I love the color! I recently acquired the exact same bike, year and all, however, mine is in need of some TLC. Previous owner must have laid it down.
I have one of those it's not that pretty it needs a little work not a lot just the carburetor cleaning and the clutch adjustment and a new battery but it needs a paint job and thanks to you I see the beauty that my bike could have I also have a 2000 Yamaha R1... I think that one's going to kill me lol

also wrapped all four header pipes up to the cans left them crome. guess now its time for the little details
thanks I just finished the tank last Sat. looks very good with the blacked out motor and the fins on the head are bear metal . used a high temp with ceramic gloss black instead of flat or satin

I just bought an '82 Maxim 550 (exactly like yours), and it runs like a dream except I need to clean out the carbs. It had been sitting for a while and I completely restored and fixed everything, but I honestly can't figure out how to get the carbs out. The airbox doesn't move back far enough for me to get them out. If you've removed your carbs, how'd you do it????
coyotedream1 You have to remove all the screws and bolts on the air box to move it all the way back. It will push back about an inch all the way against the frame tube. You also have to remove the rubber boots between the airbox and carbs. Then you will have enough room to pry the carbs off. I used a long pry bar underneath the carbs leveraging against the engine case. Once you get them off they are a little easier to work on and off. Good Luck
how hard was it to change the fuse box?
It is pretty easy. All you need to do is trim the plastic out where the existing box is located. I was able to then used the existing screw holes and bolt the new box in place. I also didn't have to extend the wiring at all. Just cut the old clips off and add new clips. I soldered them on and heat shrinked them so it was all water tight too.
