Serial tinkerer. Mostly electronics, retro computing, and stuff like that.
PC from 2002 - will it be $10 well spent?
I picked this machine up for $10 with no idea whether it worked or not. For $10 my expectations weren't high :-)

Making a disc BASIC boot disc (SVI-CAS)
All you need is a Cisco 3825 and a couple of specific voice and data WICs/NMs and you can create a dial-up ISP and PSTN simulator in a box.
Hahahaha. Nope, nope, and nope. I did enough dialup in the 90's to last a lifetime :-)
i have the same keyboarddd and it seems like every key seems to "double type" and it's driving me insane.
mine also have double type and I dont know what to do..
@@dudipahima9215 to me it's clear that logitech peripherals aren't quality made and they're not worth investing unless they're super cheap and on discount. both logitech mice and keyboards fail far too quickly than they should. this keyboard wasn't heavily used, i stored it away for a while because i didn't have a proper desk and it was heavy in comparison to the wireless cheap membrane keyboard i have and yet, the switches in this keyboard are failing. absolutely unacceptable level of quality control from logitech.
3:27 "that sounds problematic" ... and ALL the voltages being reported as sky high compared to what they should be at doesn't? lol
No teletext Mode 7! That would have been incredible if the Acorn Electron had had a Mode 7 chip. It always started on Mode 6. I absolutely loved Mode 7, even if the mode had run slower what with a lot of the machine's logic going via the ULA, it would still have been great. Never mind, in the end I got a BBC B computer which I was using earlier this evening.
Yeah, the lack of MODE 7 was what I missed the most - the MODE 7 font was really nice, and being a character mode (vs bitmap) it was very light on memory. I wasn't into games, so the lower performance wasn't a big problem for me.
I've got a model B. The back of the keyboard is like a spaghetti mess with the number of keys I've had to rewire. I guess it is 40 years old
I'm going to have to look at the delete key again - but the PCB seems OK, and the switch seems OK. Unless it's related to the orientation of the keyswitch (ie, it works, except when it's pointing upwards in the normal direction). I'll have to play with it some more. The other keys have all come good.
there no need to dissamble the mechanic that far for the little belt , also changing the capstan belt is very easy to do with the right tools . I always change the pinch roller too .
I need to replace the new head for my Sony 3 head 222esl cassette Deck where will I get to buy the head
Good question, and I don't know the answer. I can only suggest Googling around using the part number.
Just finished my brand new VICKY-TWENTY build from Bob’s PCB. All brand new except the VIC and ROMs!
I watched your video and then threw my old tc-wr590 in the trash. Geeze, you have the patience of Job.
у меня qnap ts-264 такая же проблема. чем можете помоч?
Good job man!
Thanks but it didn't work on my ts251. Started with more weird behavior. Sometimes blue USB and red hdd2 leds are on, sometimes 4! hdd red leds are on althrough this is 2 bay nas. Voltage measured without resistor is 1,86V. I guess no luck for me :(
13:10 That pad is insulating the solder connections (THT) from the USB connecting wire. Not sure if they were forced to do this or did it on their own, but this is quite usual in consumer electronics. Logitech still cares. About your solder mixing and breaking again, that is not really true, atleast I have never heard of it, or seen it myself. I would be more concerned about the pass ripping of the PCB than anything, especially when soldering a second time
Hia, nice video. The Issue 1 board is a later German Issue 1, which actually came out after the "English" Issue 2 and probably same time as the Issue 6 boards, which is why it uses the same 'blob' style Malaysia ULAs.
Many THX from POLAND it works for me too - TS-451S
Brother, how to increase output treble in my Sony 3 head 222esl deck , my deck is not producing clean treble even i play with new tapes why, can you give me advice, if i change circuit doard will it produce more treble, im frm india
I enjoyed your video. I have an X-540 system that's no longer producing output from right rear channel or the sub. In your opinion is that kind of fault fixable in this system?
Probably - could be as simple as a couple of broken wires in the cable, a dud connector, or dud solder joints where the connectors are soldered onto the board. For the right rear, I'd try swapping the speaker with another to see if the problem moves (ie, the problem is the speaker itself)
@@tassiebob Thanks for the reply. I have swapped speakers and the problem stays on that channel. if I get brave enough I'll crack it open and take a look. 😀
No meaning to be an ass here but TL DR would be very helpful here. I am just trying to get to the actual problem. And why Intel is at fault, without going to the lengty video. For people searching for it , as I understand it : TLDR: There is a fault in the CPU hardware that leads to the voltage being to high. This can be sorted with a workaround fix that the poster kindly made very clear. But this is a workaround and will fail eventually. So this workaround is only cleared out to get the data of it. I just installed a thirdparty software diskgenius to be able to read EXT4 on windows 11. This led me to be able to copy it all safely without needing nas. I didnt do raid so for me it was fairly simple.
Great video and work on this old machine Bob, and thanks for alerting me to a great new channel to follow 👍
Nice Bob, I'm really pleased you were able to detect some signs of life in the old girl! Thanks for the shout out and links 😀👍
Today my G413 met my desk and my hammer. Waiting for my Redragon K587 to arrive. Irony: I have a spare Logitech, but it's a membrane one XD
Out of curiosity I tried the same 3 line BASIC benchmark on an Electron emulator, and got exactly the same results. It was much slower in the higher graphics modes that use more RAM.
23:20 - those two keys are different, but on a EU market I guess they are also labeled differently. The right one is what we call a Graph ALT (ALT GR) and it is used to alternate between special letters, like e-ę, a-ą, s-ś, c-ć, z-ż, x-ź, n-ń etc. I was surprised to see, that your's (well, your customer's keyboard) doesn't have that ALT GR!
To reset your device to factory defaults, please follow the steps below: *Step 1:* Make sure your device is connected to a network and the status light is solid green. *Step 2:* Please use an unfolded paperclip to press and hold the RESET button for at least 20 seconds while your device is plugged in. *Step 3:* Please wait 60 seconds for the device to reboot. And this process will change all your settings back to the factory defaults.
That process worked on a couple of others, but not on the DGS-1100-10MP I had. No idea why...
This gives me vibes of when you used to be able to get the password of a DLink router through SNMP.
So i have 3 of them , i understand they are not easilly fixable , so i have to throw them away ? :(
I have 3 of them in my company , all of them same . Terrible , i really like this keyboard . Disaster
Nice job Bob! A cord with overspray is much more interesting than a normal plain cord! 😉🤣
Very true. It was a quick & dirty tidy up - it's only going to get dirty & scratched through use anyway :-)
Thank you this saved my data. Great info
You probably know by now, but... the game menu, just use the up and down keys to navigate it.
That ultrasonic cleaner is a bit nifty!
Doesnt work in my case, I have opened many times and the issue has come back. I have also changed many switches and nothing...
Dude, cheers for the video. You have a cool voice. Subbed.
I'm inclined to agree with your decision to return to a home-built NAS. I am planning to build an off-site backup NAS rather than buy a third QNAP. The main difficulty is coming up with an affordable low-power solution. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I've had to resolder the g413 that I've got about five times now, logitech's support and rma basically told me to pound sand after the second time so they're off my list of folks to buy from once the g413 finally dies for good
My TS-451+ just died. Internet search found this and some other videos about the 100 Ohm fix I soldered in a 100 Ohm resistor and my 10 year old 451+ came back to life. No data lost. But now I have to wonder how long before the thing finally dies. I really do NOT want another QNAP NAS with unreliable intel components - but the AMD stuff is 2X the cost.
both qnap and synology were affected by the bug. Synology also had issues with the PSU and depleted battery booting issues. All the products containing that C2000(i think) processor are plagued by the issue. Luckily in the case of these machines you can patch them up. In the case of laptops and other low power devices the repair chance is low...
is it not a chopped finger from MCM ?
I do indeed have one of those in the workshop, so it's very likely you saw it :-)
Can you tell which CPU you have? I've read Intel fixed this with Stepping D1 on the J1900 but I haven't found any info on what that looks like with CPUINFO. This is what mines shows model name : Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU J1900 @ 1.99GHz stepping : 9 microcode : 0x90a
I'd have to find the old NAS first - it's buried away somewhere in the workshop!
Great video 👏
Thank you for the video, my TS-451 dies unexpectedly, its symptom was in a boot loop and the boot loop shorten to two loops and then stopped. You mention pin 1-100 ohm-pin 8 is to lower the LPC clock voltage. How about pull up the LPC clock voltage? I am not sure if my TS-451's LPC voltage is lower than 1 V, but I wanted to know how to pull up the LPC voltage? and see if that help.
We have two G413's and both eventually developed the dreaded double typing issue, first one lasted about a year and 2nd one only recently started so it lasted about 3 years, seems like once the issue starts it spreads like a virus throughout the keyboard, will not be purchasing Logitech mechanical keyboards again lol. on a positive note my old Logitech K310 non mechanical keyboard still working great after 11 years of use so far.
I faced the dreaded double tapping recently, literally disintegrating the keyboard against the desk before getting a new one. At first I accepted the problem and took the keyboard apart to replace the faulty switch, then it moved on to another one and so did it, but as you say this branches out and spreads like a virus, getting to the point where all or almost all the keys do it, a complete pain for any key that isn't hot-swappable. Now I hope the Redragon Magic Wand Pro K587 doesn't let me down, but Logitech never again with these kinds of "proprietary" switches.
i'm having the same issue, i have such terrible luck with mice and keyboardss. the switches always fail so quickly it's maddening. my mouse is suppose to be rated over 1 million mouse clicks but i get the dreaded double click of death after 3-4 months of light use?
Good work Bob. Lovely old machines these G4 iMacs. I wanted one so bad BITD. Now I have several 😂
I've been using Windows 11 on my personal machine for the last 2-3 months but still have a MacBook for work. WSL does a pretty good job at being a unixy command line, but it has some limitations around USB devices, thankfully none too critical. KiCad seems to be more stable on Windows. I still get occasional crashes on MacOS even when everything is at the latest version, but on Windows it is rock solid. I've also set up a VPN to allow myself to get in remotely from the Mac and access the desktop via RDP to run software that I can't on MacOS, which is mostly FPGA dev tools. Wasn't sure how much I was going to like or dislike the change but so far I think I could honestly say I'm not looking back. Once I'm in a familiar app I forget about where I am.
I used OSX for a while - maybe 4-5 years - after I bought my now very old MacBook Pro (which still works, but has Linux on it now). The PC I'm typing this on is running Windows, but I'm just as comfortable on Linux (and the decisions Microsoft keep making continue to encourage me to install Linux on all of my machines).
@@tassiebob Microsoft are really trying their hardest to make some things difficult it seems, like forcing Edge on you in various ways. I thought we were past that kind of thing. Although it seems like theyve had their hand slapped by the EU and they will allow people in the EEA (which no longer includes the UK of course...) to remove Edge all together if they wish, but no where else in the world... sigh. I think Ive managed to get it to a state where there arent ads floating about in irritating places. Its a shame it has gone this way. Still not 100% convinced by Linux on the desktop, but we'll see over time I guess. For now, Windows makes more sense to me because of the way my hobbies have evolved and the software that Im using. I ditched Mac mostly because I was running Windows in a VM to run some other software that I needed, which just doesnt make sense when most of the remaining software I was using on Mac also works on Windows. KiCad is way more stable on Windows too, no where near as many crashes even on the latest greatest version.
Yeah, the incessant Edge push is bloody annoying. I /bought/ Windows-11 on the machine I run it on - it wasn't a free upgrade. If they start running ads on it then that'll probably be the last straw for me. For a good while now I've tried to select software that runs on Win/MacOS/Linux so that I have the option of changing. As you've found, some software still works better in Windows - DaVinci Resolve being one (it does run on Linux, but requires some file jiggling to get around missing codec support). Personally I'm not that fussy about the operating system - I'll use whatever lets me get things done with the least fuss. In $job-1 my daily driver was a Linux desktop, and it did everything I needed. Today at work I use Windows because there's some apps I need that are Windows based. At home I use both...
@@tassiebob Yeah, I bought Win 11 as well. The most annoying things I found were "suggestions" on the lock screen about using Office or Xbox Live or something, and you cant just turn them off without turning off the (rather nice) feature that cycles through interesting images on the lock screen instead of just displaying a wallpaper (unless you have your own library of images, I havent tried that yet though). And there were things that would appear in the start menu that were very ad like. It seems to only be for on-brand stuff, but still, Im not that interested in seeing ads of any kind anywhere. Its funny (sad?) that Windows itself became the adware... Another annoying thing is that while you can set up a local account without needing to create a Microsoft account (successfully managed to avoid that entirely, so far), you cant send them any feedback on their products without being logged in to one! They are really trying all of the tricks in the book of crappy tricks. But other than that, Ive got it to a nice place now and Im just getting on with stuff. It was frustrating at first, and a big change in my way of thinking about certain things, but I think Ive managed to adjust pretty well. Now I think there are things I prefer about how Windows works and things I prefer about how MacOS works.
Nice and detailed video. If I see it correctly, does it only deal with the drive side? I have the same device, which runs perfectly in terms of the motor. However, I have a different problem. I know how to operate the calibration mechanism, but I cannot achieve the required BIAS and RECORD LEVEL values with any cassette. The BIAS is usually too low. In addition, BIAS and Record Level influence each other. What could be the reason for this?
You're correct - the video was only about the mechanical side - specifically replacing the drive belts. Not sure what would be causing the issue you are seeing. I no longer have that deck here (its at my parents house), but the service manual may have some advice. I suspect you've already looked there though.
what is the usb to serial adaptor you are using? I just ordered one of these (in transit still)
Good question - I think that one is just a generic USB to serial adapter bought from a random computer store.
My TS-859Pro+ is still going strong after 14 years of continuous service. I guess they don't make 'em like they used to.
It's the generation of CPU that is the issue - if yours uses a different CPU then it'll probably be fine. The CPU in mine also caused issues in all manner of devices, not just QNAP NAS's.
I was really hoping that this would be my problem, as I had multiple bouncing keys. Finally took it apart today, and it would appear the joints are good. Likely my problem is corrosion in the switches as other people have had issues with. Of course you have to desolder every switch just to remove the face plate and disassemble the switches themselves. Still a great video!
My 451+ suffered from this. Just replaced it with a 673A last week with a Truenas Scale box as a backup that syncs once a week. Lucky for me that QTS on the 673A sees all my data from the drives from the old qnap.
I ended up replacing mine with a TrueNAS Scale box, and push backups off to a separate box each night.
Hi Bob. Very helpful and informative video!. Am curious, what did you do as a long term solution?
Moved all the data to TrueNAS Scale, with another server taking daily backups. Uses way more power, but it's what I had.
These are some of the most reliable of the original c64 power supplies. Those power supplied are NOT known to go bad. You are thinking of the potted ones. You could just change the caps and replace the regulator. Myself as a experiment I wired a inline Aliexpress dc to dc converter for the 5v ouput. All of the insides are left as they are. I do plan to replace the inside of a Sinclair 48k power supply as they get too hot even without being potted but this c64 power supply didnt need what you did.
You're right :-)
