Audio Comedy Sketch: Sesame Street: The Complete Series Collection
I recorded this last April for a podcast episode, but I think it works as a stand-alone sketch. It's just a reminder of the enormity of Sesame Workshop's library of content, which makes a complete series release of this show just impossible, and perhaps even undesirable. Still, it makes me wish Sesame was better at the streaming game.

In this video essay, I have a go at figuring out the 1986 Jim Henson classic 'Labyrinth'. How did it happen? Why was it made? Why is it so strange? What's the deal with David Bowie's outfit? What is this film really about, anyway? What's your favorite part of 'Labyrinth'? Did I leave out something you love? Let me know in the comments below! The entire movie is full of biblical references, be it character names or direct quotes from the bible and if you compare it to the latest series Called Eric, it follows the same theme. There’s a lot to unpack in both but ultimately it’s a warning of sex trafficking in children and drug abuse. Rewatch both, it’s uncanny. Bowie sang about crystal blue, it’s only forever. This film packs a punch.
Wow awesome essay!! Answers a lot of questions I've often wondered about with this movie.
This film is pure artistic genius and my mind will never change on that
Hey J. D. Hansel, I very much appreciated your commentary ! Thank you very much for putting all this work into it.
If they just would have focused on the Labyrinth aspect of the film instead of making it a David Bowie musical, 'Labyrinth' would have been one of the best films ever. I like David Bowie's voice, just not his soft ballads.
Wonderful work, thanks and congratulations, would you please let the subtitles appear????, I´m spanish
I don’t know why she didn’t ask “is his shield green” to both of the weird shield door guys and then whoever said no would’ve been the truthful one
Thanks so much for this insight; I'm writing my own continuation of this (call it a fan-fic if you want.) and I've been struggling to find as many personal takes on this story as I can. (worse than pulling teeth, it's so hard!) I appreciate these takes!
I always loved this movie.
I just leave my simple comment here Enjoyed these thoughts so much, especially the symbols and accents on how to behave right. Thank you for sharing
Y’all had to remind us that Brian made the happytime murders huh? 💀 Regardless I’m glad to see an analysis that i think really works. Cinema Therapy did a ‘review’ and they didn’t look deeply into it at all. They should’ve had a guest who felt like they could understand the movie because all they did was talk about how absurd and bad it is.
Just watched. What a wonderful break down! Made me appreciate this movie even more than I previously did.
Outstanding essay.
They really didn’t know back then just what they’d created. An absolute true masterpiece of a cult classic.
I'm so happy I somehow stumbled upo this essay, labyrinth is one of my favourite movies and this is such a well done and interesting analysis o fit!!
wow, what an expertional video...this reminded me of how great and informative the format of the video essay can be. Thank you!
Good work
Thank you for this
"A Fortress of Fantasy" God that is an epic name for a chapter if i ever read one.
What a perfect movie! It's so clever and so perfectly layered with symbolism and depth. There's so much rhyme in the story...it's just a perfect film.
I have always loved this movie but I never saw it in the theater until last weekend. It was definitely designed to be viewed on the big screen with surround sound. Even tho I have seen it a million times it felt like a new adventure all over again. It was fun to laugh with an audience and get lost in the scenes. It almost seemed 3-D with all the effects and amazing cinematography. I highly recommend it for any fan, next time you can see it in the theater GO !! It's mind blowing!!!
I grew up watching this movie on repeat, and struggled thus far to meet a single person who was willing to consider any of the topics you so beautifully covered in this video. Thank you so much for making this essay.
EXCELLENT citations. Hbomberguy has no notes, and neither do I.
The goblin king is the baby!😮
you did an incredibly thorough job on one of my favorite films of all time. I really thank you. Warm greetings from Italy!
No I'm going to think for my self, critically and disagree
I’ve loved this movie since I was a kid. It holds a very special place in my heart.
Well done! An excellent essay, and definitely the most thoughtful and insightful I have yet seen on the internet about this movie.
"a film for adults"? (It was released my birth year and I watched it at all ages.)
The peach is the pomegranate seed
18:41 This is what would be a loss... for those who wouldn't receive this message as they viewed the film.
Maybe my ace ass is just projecting but I think Bowie's androgynous yet vaguely threatening presence and her rejection of him speaks to young asexuals. Parental figures pushing you to do more 'normal' social interactions when you'd rather be doing something else. Bowie being androgynous but pretty universally attractive speaks to the vague ideas of what you're supposed to like but aren't really sure of, meanwhile the whole concept is intimidating and strange and feels like a trap. She rejects him and finds comfort and satisfaction with friends instead
Finished the vid, absolutely amazing piece of analysis! I finally satiated my curiosity about this film yesterday, and it was a fun time. I, probably like many others, came out with the conclusion that fantasy need not be forsaken, just accompany you without taking over. But this was incredibly layered, and in depth and the message of your interpretation is even more powerful IMO. Well done!
“Sarah reads and we watch video essays so we’re smart” That like sent me to the ground
Bravo. What you’ve done here is very much like seeing the mechanics at the back of the cleaners. The depths of this film are really quite bottomless and you’ve plumbed satisfyingly deep. Thank you.
This was excellent. Thank you. There was one element you didn’t discuss, which I understand why..because it’s just another element to the whole package. It’s the theme song, Underground. When I take in the song by itself, I’m sorry, but to me, it’s a song about suicide and going to the underground; hell. It does play in with the overall theme…. You are responsible for your life, your choices, your decisions. Don’t loose your head. It’s almost like it stretches the whole theme to THAT point as well. The theme song doesn’t seem to match the actual theme of the movie, except maybe in that our choices (the bad ones) can make our life a living hell. A bad choice is like suicide in that way, as in, it can kill off our hopes, entirely.
I never realized till now all the characters are in her room as stuffed animals and things like that
I really liked when David Bowie said "the power of vuuduu you do" to me the baby
The Triforce can be seen on the throne in Dark Crystal
David Bowie can turn into a bird and flies between demensions diving through water into a different reality that doesn't have the water he just dived into. A water portal
I will be honest, Sarah totally screwed me. The fantasy world was far better than the normal world I live in now. Where I do things like go to therapists and don't experience are fantastic and wonderous. I am even without my loves Lorna (the stable girl from Zelda) and Lynn the celestial goddess, both of whom are supposed to be my wives, but neither are my wives. Meaning I totally got screwed, absent of love and with no fantasy world
It wasn't a poisonous fruit. It is a memory forgetting peach, meant to keep her from making to to rescue the baby. It was made from a crystal ball
Maybe it isn't about Sarah and is instead about the baby that was a child and a man before a baby, that is Elf from the Zelda games and Dark Crystal, a coming of age story about why Elf became Jonathan Taylor and growing up in a "normal world" because he was "saved" by Sarah and didn't end up staying in the fantasy world of The Dark Crystal and Hyrule, instead ending up on Earth and growing up as a normal kid.
I was even a woman in 2 incarnations of the past, before baby. I was exploded in the hindenburg and reborn to be in the Labyrinth as a baby
I was the baby in Labyrinth, other things I have done since then. I was a child runway model in Japan and I was the red shirt kid in the music video to Cake - The Guitar Man
I was totally a part of The Dark Crystal too
Attention youtube, this is how you do a long form retrospective 🔥 #subbed
Funny that you took more time to figure this movie out than Jim Henson did to put it together! Lol
This is the reason why I completely ignor the critics. I enjoyed both movies but found Labryinth way better than Pans Labryinth.
I love that people can have Labyrinth themed birthday parties & Labyrinth weddings. I love the Labyrinth simply because it's magical.
Excellent. I really enjoyed your analysis. A lot of essays on this movie get so lost in the weeds and details. I think you're spot on. And a note, I've always loved how often Sarah is unlikeable. She is not the damsel, the princess, or the brave hero she always expects herself to be. She's more complicated than that. And that's okay.
Pam's labyrinth was absolutely brilliant except for not being in English. It would have been perfection of it would have been understandable.
