I spent six weeks in Italy and saw the bureaucracy first hand. When we visited relatives there, they all said the same thing. Australia is a first world country, why do you want to live here?

Hospital in Italy treat your illness (and generally they do that very, very well) but they don't pamper you and only share with you the bare minimum. It's easy to get the perception that you are left alone or not cared for in a proper way but that's rarely the case.

😢From italy to holland ...a big change !!! Terrible weather, grey sky, rain, cold, not very warm people and much less art!!! Will you get used do it? Florence an Italy are not easy to forget. Ps. I'm sorry that you had a bad experience with the hospitals in Florence but healtcare is very good in Italy on average...and free!!! I don't see what that Dutch patient was afraid of??? I lived in the Miami area for four years where the temps would be 85 to 90 degrees F (about 30 - 33 degrees C) with 90 - 100 percent humidity and it was so uncomfortable: big canal rats, big cockroaches, big flies and mosquitoes--just bigger in general. Here, where I live now in SW Utah, it's 105 - 110 degrees F (about 40 degrees C) in the summer but dry heat. With the dry heat and UV radiation, there are a few cockroaches and ants but nothing formidable. Well, dry or humid it's pretty awful. So, I'm used to heat, in one form or another. I lived in Germany for two years and traveled throughout northern Europe: yes, much more regimented and people follow the rules. My people are from Denmark and Germany and I was raised in New England during the 1950s and 1960s, so I'm more used to that sort of culture.

Unfortunately the "Italian" humid heat is our cross: not only in Florence (very hot) but from May to September throughout Italy. Last year even until the end of October. In other places in Europe the climate is even happier.

Thank...Live in the Netherlands for several years and yes the healthcare is very good. France is also good as long as you not leave in an isolate area. Lived also in Italy, and sadly the level of healthcare was not good at all, for my standards but yet a very nice country. I am surprised to see the amount of people encouraging to move to Italy when you are retiring, often to move to small villages/towns without even thinking about one of the most important factor which is the healthcare facilities and their efficiencies/quality...All in all I would pick Spain,France.

Why not fly back to America for health care?

Southern Italy is hotter , slower more corrupt bureaucracy and the people are not as sophisticated. Move to northern Italy if you want more sophisticated European experience.

Expats are temporarily assigned for a predetermined duration in a specific location, by their existing corporate employers, in their professional capacity. You're immigrants. Simple as that. If you're trying to leave again after some time you're not an immigrant, you're a guest worker, or maybe a tourist. Expats 😂 Think you're better or what? Because that's how y'all come across. No one except you guys like that trust me.

Buongiorno Saar. Your wonderful channel popped up on my YT feed yesterday. It could not have happened at a better time. I am doing 'deep dive' due diligence on applying for an ERV (Elective Residence Visa). Your experience with the health service mirrors comments I have read on other channels and blogs. Obtaining an ERV is challenging and every consulate seems to interpret the conditions differently. However, my main concern is the process of obtaining a PDS when you arrive in Italy. I have read that people are waiting 8 months for their first appointment at a Questura. This means it could be a year before you actually have a PDS card. The PDS is the 'key' to 'official' life - commune, SSN, doctor, buying a car etc, so I could be in limbo for maybe a year. I live in Bangkok and have 3 annual check-ups with my rheumatologist; the care is fantastic. Listening to your experience, I am concerned that gaining access to a rheumatologist might be extremely difficult until I am in the system. Like you, I am entitled to an S1, but I cannot register this without a PDS. Also, I have been told that some ASLs do not want to accept the S1. Catch 22 🤕. I have lived in France and Spain (Andalucia) and have restored houses in both countries. I've always wanted to experience 'la dolce vita', but the more I investigate, the more I see that life is not so 'dolce' 🥲. The non-lucrative visa for Spain is more straightforward. The financial requirements are lower, you can use an S1 for your health costs, and, when you arrive in Spain, you get a TIE residency card from your local police station or immigration office. I think I may return to España. You mentioned Cordoba. It is gorgeous. I ran a guest house in the 'pueblo blanco' of Medina Sidonia in the Provincia de Cádiz. Cádiz is an interesting town - history, food, beach, good transport connections, great bars and the locals are full of 'character' 😂 I hope you are both well again. If I can give you any ideas on España, please ask. Buena suerte 😎.

I am an American who has lived in France with my wife since early 2023, and the same sort of issues in Italy are in France, except, the healthcare is on a slightly higher level here I think. Are there doctors and hospitals in Italy that are private that people can pay for there, or are they all government paid for facilities? Here there are both private and public facilities

Yeah, Italy is not easy to foreigners... But it's truthful. You can live here but it will not be easy. Apart for burocracy, it's not easy to just change culture. There's a lot of issues that comes in that way that can sometimes be impossible to win over. Nonetheless it's possible. Definitely is way harder become Italians than just becoming citizens of any other countries in the world. You know? Things that values a lot usually cost a lot. 😉 Good luck, be happy. ALSO WHY didn't you guys try a different city? Italy is long so the climate is SO SO VARIED? From Siciliy, and beaches etc to mountains in Alps???? Puglia...so many regions.

i think you finally it the wall that stands below all the beautiful veils of Italy. Which doesn't make the veils untrue, but at the same time doesn't make the wall untrue. And that is one of the reasons why Italians leave Italy (even if they eventually return for the other reasons :D). The burocracy is stupid. Togheter with the Indian one, they are the worst in the world. They both look nice until.... something happens in their mind (or somewhere). They just stop being who they are. They become "the system" And they are proud of it And they basically become robots who can't solve the easiest problem because "it's the system" (similar like people that says "it's the law" or "it's the medic system") They refer to it in a way that makes you think they believe that is something "supernatural" that cannot be touched or improved or even disregarded, if necessary. Somehow they don't realize or they forgot that "they are system" and that free will together with good sense, are more important then rules. they forgot that the "system" is made (or brought on) by humans (at least for what i know) and they could change that if it's not working. making it more thin and efficient, at least. So they have hospitals and rules and equipment, but they will lack somewhere else. Let's enjoy the food and the landscapes, it's better... sadly
