I’m Daniella, a scholar of cults, extreme groups, and extremely bad leadership.
I was born three generations into the notorious sex cult, the children of God, and after my escape, and getting an education, I commissioned into the US Army. My first book, Uncultured, is about the parallels
I found.
I have a masters degree in organizational psychology from Harvard, and I am currently writing a second book called the Culting of America.
But really, I’m just here educating people about cults, coercive, control, leadership demagogy, and how cult tactics, techniques and procedures show up in all kinds of groups that we don’t call “cults“

Speaking of hair around 1:00:00, getting a pixie cut 2 years ago was one of my first actions of self-love and authenticity ❤️
Again, I appreciate your conversation!!! You and Rebecca inspire me so damn much! Coming from a family of white, Christian missionaries in Canada, attempting to have these very real conversation with friends and family is very revealing. Many don't want to comprehend how they uphold intersectional subjugation, and are more concerned with the appearance of success than what it means to pave the way for all of us!
@@JEdwarrd thanks for being here
This sounds like it'll be a great movie!
this episode really hit home for me. i’m a white woman, and my body has been a point of contention my whole life. my male family members in particular have always given their unsolicited opinions on the way i look. it got really bad when i started gaining weight, so many inappropriate things have been said to me. both my mother and my older brother told me that i would never find a husband if i looked the way i do. to this day both of them deny that they ever said that to me. so much shame and toxicity
@@coolchameleon21 I’m so sorry that happened to you
In Canada right now going back to office is being legislated for government workers and at the same time the traffic congestion is becoming an issue which of course going to require government funded highway expansion projects. And I just made that connection.
This episode seems to have been pulled from Spotify but I don't know why
I listened to you talking while I was cleaning the kitchen-unpaid labor! But listening to you both helped alot! Love the chop top! I couldn’t visualize it till you modeled it. ❤
I feel like this is one I watched before... But always glad to hear it all again <3
There is so much to digest here. Thank you both so much.
@@fionnagrant6636 I probably posted it, but didn’t put it in the podcast playlist, but there was a hole when I was looking, so I figured I would put it on again
My church was upset i was vuluptious as a teenager and i kept telling them if I lost weight I would loose waist line and still have big boobs and big butt, when I did then they wanted me to wear looser clothing but it still fell in the right places so then they told me to wear tighter clothing then that was a problem then I finally figured out how to cover up then I looked like I was trying to look older so then I went back to looking youthful then the issue was the pants so I wore skirts but the skirts looked too good.... etc etc etc
@@OneidaGC that sounds difficult and embarrassing 😞
That's just crazy!! I'm sorry they put you through all that!!
So well written. Thank you for promoting it! It’s going on my TBR list
When parents raise their children believing that they are entitled to their children becoming future friends.... Thinking that they can use this entitled friendship through paternity as a reason to isolate the family from contrasting world views or critiques of their behaviors as parents.... Is That's culty?... And if so, how does it differ from the troops that you guys are talking about, depicted in the film and that you have experienced? What do you do when it is hard to tell the difference between family and a cult? Is it the government's job to enable law-abiding parents to turn their families into de facto cults?
The proportion of nose to head and the roundness of the ears is what is giving me "mouse" instead of "cat." The pink part of the nose or the diameter of the muzzle may need to be larger. Maybe the Whiskers further apart. idk what to do with the ears, it looks like you have the theory of the shape right, but they just be rounded for some reason.
@@JasminemPolyanthum thanks!
My Dad was super into Calvinism. We were Presbyterians. In Australia in the 70s and 80s it sounds like our church was just like your Orthodox Presbyterians. It was a very bleak faith that's for sure. I love the music though. We sang lots of Psalms and had a cool hymn book with split pages to mix and match the tunes with the words. It was a very good stim toy during those long sermons. 🙂
And that, girls and boys, is why I'm not a fan of Calvinism. You've got all the religious mysteries there - how can anyone see religion as comforting? How does religion give your life meaning?
Ugh that was great
I'm showing this to my Film Friends
I find it funny that people apparently think you're tall, bc if I had to guess your height I would've gotten it right. apparently my brain associates trustworthy, intelligent women with my mother, who is also 5'5". I can't say I particularly associate height with charisma bc as a 5'10" woman I consider myself not charismatic in the slightest.
Oooo so thought-provoking!
Years since I saw the film Martha Macy May Marlene and I wonder how it holds up.
I have EDS and was raised by a former Marine and Special Forces officer. I feel this interview so much. Great discussion again. Thank you

Re: Lucas comments on his mom crying over a death- a close family member is a Mormon and says “good for them!” when a family member dies. I haven’t heard him say it but the very idea evokes rage in me!
Also want to laud Lucas for being vulnerable despite how family will respond. 🙌
I can feel you both relaxing and I love this conversation more every week!
Really interested to know which, if any cult survivors think are good films or docs. Incredibly difficult to watch and often best to avoid I appreciate.

I find it so weird and gross when family members try to control appearance because it always seems like they want you to dress in a way that they would be attracted to. Their standards. My dad even criticized the color of bathing suit I wanted to wear to Splash Town when I was 10 or 11. Called it "lesbian lime green". Excuse me but I am trying to have a brat summer, Pops! 😂 I am really glad both of my parents have done some deconstructing and evolving over the years. Spoke to my mom on the phone today, I told her about the podcast you have with Rebecca and she said she is going to buy Uncultured for me for my birthday! It is a trauma privilege (traumalege? I don't remember!) to be able to have the conversations with my folks in an honest and safe and thoughtful way. Thank you for the work you do and for sharing what you have shared.

@@sara-studies aw, that’s kind. Doing a happy hour in Philly on Nov 7, not sure where in the world you are ❤️
I will say only SOME Black men can lean into their maleness in a corporate enviornment, and i would argue these are men who are exceptional and more agressive or competent in their field. Awesome discussion
When you said America and Australia have the most cults and are full of colonized white people, I had a hard “what about me?” Moment since I am in Canada 🍁 I can’t speak on the number of cults here, but the white superiority complex is very alive here. I would say that in Canada, native women are by far the most oppressed, especially when you get a bit further north, or in the West coast (Alberta is the Texas of Canada)
@@sara-studies yes Canada is culty too.
You know it really tracks. The Regency, Victorians really went hard for "polite." All the rules, all of the respectability, and none of the respect. It becomes hard to talk about hard things because it ain't polite. Or it is hard to have upward mobility if you never learned the difference between a dessert fork and a salad fork, or can't opine about Shakespeare because your parents couldn't afford to send you to finishing school to get rid of your Cockney accent. Hellacious gatekeeping.
That's because they never let you get into one.
I'm a comic book illustrator, a 31-year-old woman and my life and style are deeply embedded into comfort and what's considered to be more masculine. Not to be a "not like other girls", but because I am child free and can no longer relate to most women my own age. Those women either treat me like a charity case that couldn't find a husband (been married for 6 years), or they're a little bit envious wondering what it's like to be this age and going down a road less traveled for women. And for both of those women, I hope they figure things out.
NICE!!!!!!!!
Read memoirs of an economic hit man. I think you’ll like it. It’s about financial manipulation of impoverished countries in central and South America. How the US went down there and pulled leaders into the US financial cult.
