.................so maybe the band did play this on the "Titanic".

    • @stephencoster2697

@@oldelephantstew On balance, I’m inclined to think not. The song was first heard in the UK when it featured in a revue called “Everybody’s Doing It”, which opened at the Empire Theatre on 14 February 1912. The first recordings of it were made the following month but may have only just been issued (or not) by the time the Titanic set sail, meaning that the song would not yet have seeped into the general public’s consciousness, in those pre-radio days. It was certainly not on the White Star Line’s ships orchestras’ repertoire list, though another of Irving Berlin’s numbers, “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” was, and there are survivor’s accounts of that being played on the fateful night.

It sounds like the original could be a nice recording.... unfortunately we can't really hear it the way it was meant to be heard this way .... this is an electrical recording from 1931.... that acoustic pre World War I phonograph was hopelessly outdated in 1931...

I so loved this recording by Gracie Fields. I am 79 and thanks to my beloved mother who instilled the love of music in me. I find the old recordings relating to the 2nd WW very moving. How amazing to have vintage music as your passion
