Fixing this crappy hood and restoring a bug deflector!
Hey guys! Jason is switching it up in todays videos and working on his (new to him) truck. The bug deflector and hood need serious attention! The bug deflector is an easy fix with basic sanding and polishing. The hood has seen better days and after many years the sun has taken its toll of the vinyl wrap. The Vinyl has cracked all over and rusting in some areas. Using the contour SCT from @eastwood gets the hood stripped to bare metal. A 5" DA sander with 80 Grit scuffs up the bare metal for applying epoxy primer that was left over from the chopper project. Elbow grease goes along way in getting this truck to look better!

Hi. Great helpful vid. Question... You show the chrome headlight bracket bolting on to the lower tree through the two front holes. Aren't those holes also for tightening the tree to the forks or dual purpose? Wondering cuz I thought to see a torque wrench used. I am piecing a build together and guess I need a headlight bracket to go under the two bolts I just installed which I thought had sole purpose of squeezing the tree slots closed around the fork tube....

@@bottomrung5777 yes you are correct but this was also in a mock up stage. If you happen to catch a video I did on my buell you can see my tq wrench being used. I tend to get fussy when it comes to tq specs if I can help it. And you don’t need a bracket, the original headlamp bolted to the headlamp visor that mounted to the top triple mount which has specific mounts for that. Hope this helps

A chopper is a type of custom motorcycle which emerged in the US state of California in the late 1950s. A chopper employs modified steering angles and lengthened forks for a stretched-out appearance. They can be built from an original motorcycle which is modified ("chopped") or built from scratch. Some of the characteristic features of choppers are long front ends with extended forks often coupled with an increased rake angle, hardtail frames (frames without rear suspension), very tall "ape hanger" or very short "drag" handlebars, lengthened or stretched frames, and larger than stock front wheel. To be considered a chopper a motorcycle frame must be cut and welded at some point. I.e. the name chopper. The sissy bar, a set of tubes that connect the rear fender with the frame, and which are often extended several feet high, is a signature feature on many choppers.

Yes, there is. In order for a motorcycle to be a chopper, the frame must have been cut and significantly altered from the factory form. Hardtailing a swingarm frame or raking the neck for examples. A Bobber has had factory installed components removed and not replaced to reduce weight.

Bobber my personal favorite, is a sub category of chopper. Some things have usually been chopped. Chopper, in my opinion is referring to the rake, fork length. Stock fork length or under , again my preference, is a bobber. The bobbers from the 50s and 60s are just perfect to me. It's a long discussion, with many opinions. Good topic.

@@laurentruesdale4088 The term Bobber predates the term Chopper. Choppers, by definition, were being created almost from the beginning of mass motorcycle production, but the term is post WWII, as is Bobber. Bobber is the term used to describe surplus motorcycles after WWII that had all of the non essential equipment removed to make them go faster. Chopper is the term used in reference to motorcycles that had their frames cut to make performance modifications. Later, the term was applied to motorcycles that had been cut to make styling modifications. The two terms have morphed over time to refer to a style rather than to performance mods. But both were originally references to performance mods.

How that time set is in straight is pure luck! Starting a drill turning after entering the hole is a surefire way of snagging the drill, causing the hole to get out of round, oversized and crooked. 40+ years of aviation mechanics and machining experience here. NEVER start a drill in the hole! Get the drill turning at the proper speed for the diameter you are drilling and slowly let the drill center itself on the work. Keep it spinning at one constant speed at all times. Pecking (short drilling, clearing and reentering the hole as required to clear the chips). Now when using a reamer.(run at 1/2 speed of the drill) AGAIN get it turning BEFORE entering, ONE steady pass in and out if possible, pecking can be done if necessary but, keep the rotation of the drill motor turning at all times! A drill guide is seldom if ever required to follow an existing hole. Unless that hole is mislocated then, a drill guide or block is mandatory. One more professional hint Use a tap handle with a tap. NOT a ratchet! Good way to break a tap in the hole by side loading it! I must gotta tell you, my skin was crawling watching this! Feel free to delete my comment if you prefer. Honestly, just trying to help you out. Friends have tried selling me on these time sets, I'm old school and am very comfortable with using tried and true heli coils. I watched this video to see what all the hoopla is about. I will stick with good old school heli coils. Good enough for Navy and Marine aviation, good enough for my Harleys. Never stop learning! I must admit, your finished insert looks nicely done!
