I did a lot of reflection about doing straight covers like this, and realized that I really enjoy breaking down songs and playing them. Listening and figuring out all the different parts and intricacies, harmonies, drum fills, just everything. Then putting it together to try to match(ish) production to see if I can learn new ways to do things. I don't know where I'm going with this, other than just saying I enjoy music, and I'm not gonna stop doing these.

Very interesting, before I saw your other video on this, I had no idea this was being done so regularly! Most of the time, when I watch a drum cover, its just so I can see what is being played to help me learn the song better. I agree with your point that its phony and misleading when litterally every snare hit is edited, but even heavily processed "covers" like that can still have value as learning resourses. Just don't call it a performance.

My counterpoint, conceptually, to the 'this is fake' argument boils down to -- if we are taking issue with this, do we also take issue with people having performance in music videos? Is there umbridge to be called when a band syncs concert footage to the studio recording? I think a lot of times, it would need to boil down to the way the video is presented. I know Cole Rolland and Jules Conroy aren't filming the performance I hear, but I also know that the footage of Adam Neely (and friends)' cover of Run Away With Me, by contrast, is. I think there is space for both presentations to be valid. But idk, I'm still trying to get a record out the door with my performance on it lol

I think it is a case of music as music vs. music as content. While there's nothing wrong with using the tools we have as musicians and producers to make our songs sound their best, when something is presented as a live cover/playthrough when it should be called a studio session that strikes me as misrepresentation.
