Kylian Mbappe has a chance to win the Ballon Dor every year now that he has finally made that move to Real Madrid once and for all. For me in recent years he’s been the best footballer in the world, he has continued to get better and better, he’s a World Cup winner, he has the most goals all time in the history of PSG and very soon he’ll be France’s all time leading scorer and he’s a great player, but for his legacy he was never going to truly get the respect that he deserves no matter what he achieved domestically since winning 7 Ligue 1 titles in a team that wins their league every season with or without him isn’t really significant because now that he’s left they’ll continue dominating the league. When it comes to basketball terms, I do agree that him going to Real Madrid is basically like Kevin Durant joining the Golden State Warriors as he’s already joining a great team, but being part of a champions league winning team is the only way he’ll get closer to winning a Ballon Dor. We’re talking about a team that’s won the UCL 15 times and since 2009, players other than Messi that’ve won the Ballon Dor have been Real Madrid players. They’ll be more eyes on Mbappe at Real Madrid than there was at PSG meaning that people will regularly be appreciating his performances in La Liga which bodes well for his image and PR and he’s going to have a much stronger supporting cast around him, better midfielders and that’s going to boost his numbers even further no matter what position he’s going to play. We also have to acknowledge that he’ll be playing alongside Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham and they’re a star studded team who have players with loads of PR, he’s a goalscorer, if Mbappe scores 50+ goals a season and he’s winning trophies; he’ll get all the credit with the potential of this team having a lot of dominance for the years to come and they’re likely to win lots of champions leagues, I could see him winning 3-4 Ballon Dors, not to mention that he’s part of a strong national team that’s always seen as one of the frontrunners to win in every major tournament they’re in as he could also win the World Cup again or the EUROs whether it’s this year or in a couple of years time. One of Bellingham or Vini has to win the award this year because now they’ll be on the same team as Mbappe at Madrid and with him set to dominate football and be the best player in the world, that hurts their Ballon Dor chances when he’s the one gonna get all the spotlight and right now there isn’t a player who can rival him statistically maybe apart from Erling Haaland and in terms of overall game, he’s not as good as him. Despite the fact that he’s a prolific goalscorer who scores so many goals for fun, number 9s of Haaland’s caliber are never the best footballer in the world and while he can rival him in terms of stats, he’s not on the same level as Mbappe and since Messi and Ronaldo don’t play in Europe anymore in his prime he is the face of football and he’s going to be dominating for many years at Real Madrid.

Kylian Mbappe is one of the contenders to win the Ballon Dor in 2024 despite other candidates having an edge over him. He had another brilliant season at PSG, scoring 44 goals in all competitions had the joint most goals out of any player in Europe and in the Champions League meaning that statistically speaking, he was the best player in the world last season and he was very good individually in terms of the numbers that he put up. When I say that Mbappe is the best player in the world, I’m not saying that he should be compared to Messi and Ronaldo because not many top players can reach their standards. Even if he played in the “farmers league” it doesn’t change the season that he had. In terms of individual brilliance with him in his prime, he’s the best footballer in the world and in any other season with his stats, he would be seen as the automatic frontrunner for the Ballon Dor and for his career, it’s great that that he’s finally secured a move to Real Madrid meaning that he has plenty of chances of winning the award this year, but it’s going to be very difficult for him to do that. The reason for that is because he spent last season as a PSG player and with all of the success he had domestically, the lack of a champions league title hurts his chances as that’s where Vinicius Junior Jude Bellingham and Toni Kroos have an edge over him in the Ballon Dor race. As I mentioned before, Mbappe was the top scorer in the champions league, but in the knockout stages in a lot of big games, he wasn’t as decisive for PSG as you’d expect him to be. Just like a lot of other contenders, he needs to win the EUROs with France and play well in order to win the Ballon Dor and so far that hasn’t started off well for both of them. In the group stages of the tournament, France have yet to get going as they’ve scored 2 goals in 3 games one was a penalty and the other was an own goal and with their failure to beat a Poland team that was eliminated and had nothing to play for, they’re now in a difficult bracket to win this competition as they have to play against the likes of Spain Portugal and Germany and beat them if they are to get to the final. He broke his nose in the opening game of the tournament against Austria and he has been involved in both of their goals and finally scored a goal at the EUROs, but in the games that he’s played in so far, Mbappe hasn’t been at his prolific best and that’s obviously not his fault as he has to get used to playing with a mask. If he doesn’t win the Ballon Dor this year, it’s not the end of the world especially since he finally got his move to Real Madrid and he’s set to win this award once and for all and many more Ballon Dors to come in the future.

My only argument that I can make against him is that yes he’s a phenomenal player and I like Jude Bellingham, but there were moments throughout the season particularly when they won the champions league where he wasn’t even Real Madrid’s best player. Due to the fact that their success last season was more of a collective effort rather than individual brilliance, if you actually watch this Madrid team, you would know that many players were as important to the team as he was and they had their moments as well. Vinicius Junior was the most important player at Real Madrid when it came to the champions league as he was the best player in the competition and he was decisive for them in multiple big games in the knockout stages where it really mattered the most and the likes of Carvajal Kroos and Valverde were consistent performers for them. The reason why I say that he’s arguably not the best player on the team is we saw how Real Madrid were able to still get results and win games when he didn’t play which tells you the strength of their squad and how other players contributed to the team. Even though he did well in La Liga as he was the best player in the league, he started very well in the champions league, but he went missing in some pivotal games for Real Madrid in the knockout stages as I felt as if he was ineffective against Bayern Munich Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City and I know he got an assist in the final against his former club, he didn’t play very well in that game. As talented of a player he is, sometimes Bellingham is living off of Madrid PR in a sense that nobody would see him as a Ballon Dor contender and he wouldn’t be getting a lot of media hype if he didn’t have that outrageous start to the season where he was scoring goals for run. He doesn’t always need to score in order to make an impact in the game especially when his off ball movement is vital to helping his teammates flourish and he’s able to track back and do the dirty work and without being flashy all the little things he does helps the team. The EUROs has started well for him as he showed no signs of slowing down during their game against Serbia where he was the only reason why England were able to win that game because they weren’t great, against Denmark he dropped a stinker which wasn’t his fault when the whole team played terribly. England are seen as strong contenders to win this competition, based off of the first 2 games of the tournament, they’re not playing with confidence and they don’t look like a team that can win it all and that doesn’t bode well for Bellingham’s Ballon Dor chances. I don’t think that football has dropped off if he wins the Ballon Dor assuming he leads England at the EUROs and I would have no issue if he wins it, I would give him a 35% chance of that happening this year.

If the season ended in January/February, Jude Bellingham wouldn’t already won the 2024 Ballon Dor and everyone saw him as an early frontrunner to the award. It made sense because he had a blistering start to his career at Real Madrid which is part of why he’s in the race to be the best player in the world. At the start of the season, he was on fire, everything he touched turned to goals as he had 17 goals in 20 games from August to December and he had the most goals by any player in their first 15 games for Real Madrid and he’s literally a midfielder who was putting up ridiculous numbers even though it helped him that they were getting used to not playing with a natural striker. He bailed the team out time and time again and came up clutch with a lot of game winning goals when they weeks playing well and this is the sign of someone who’s a “game changer” puts the team on their back when they’re not at their best. He was scoring goals at a staggering rate to a point where we thought that he would end the season with 35+ goals. Towards the 2nd half of the season, he cooled off and he wasn’t as prolific as he was during the start of the season as he missed some games with injuries and suspension, he ended the season with 23 goals in all competitions which is good enough. Despite the fact that recently, Real Madrid won the champions league, Vinicius Junior has a better chance of winning the Ballon Dor than Jude Bellingham this year as he has an edge over him due to what he did in the UCL and how pivotal he was for them in multiple big games in the knockout stages where he got a G/A in every tie from the RD of 16 to the final itself. He’s not out of the Ballon Dor race yet and he has a chance of winning this award if England does well at the EUROs. If Brazil wins the Copa America and England wins the EUROs, Bellingham should win the Ballon Dor over Vini, because of how prestigious the EUROs is compared to the Copa America and as I’ve said before everyone knows how his PR works.
