    Hi Channel, I have heard that Luna Rossa became too predictable and this favoured Ineos Britannia. Personally I still think Luna Rossa should have shown more aggression and mix it up in the start box, despite any perceived weaknesses of their boat. Even today I still think this series was for Luna Rossa to lose. Another words I think they should have one. The Italians have a nice boat. Winning the upwind should be a winning strategy, but it wasn’t. Cheers.

    I'm wouldn't think the video on the right at 2:15 and 7:40 is necessarily demonstrating cavitation (or ventilation). It's showing flow separation and eventually a stalled foil. I think the "cloudiness" that we can see is from the marker smoke/lines that are injected in the flow for visibility, as the layer detaches and becomes turbulent.

    • @PressureSailing
      @PressureSailing Месяц назад

      The video you see in the timestamps is an example. As said in the beginning we’ve decided to make a simple, efficient and for everyone analysis, so the examples follows the same concept

  • @Gottenhimfella
    @Gottenhimfella Месяц назад

    Pietro assumes at around 12:00 that the rudder will always lift the aft end of the boat, and this is true when lifting off the water at around 20 knots, but my understanding that at higher speeds, it transitions to pulling down (helping with righting moment). This is particularly true if the bearaway is not well executed in stronger winds and the boatspeed does not increase quickly enough. The apparent wind then swings further aft, and the resulting drive force on the sails forces the nose downwards. If the rudder wing foils lose grip, the result will be a sudden nosedive.

    • @PressureSailing
      @PressureSailing Месяц назад

      Let’s take as example a normal sailing boat. When you sail upwind the force of the wind is “lifting” the bow, so you will ask everyone to stay seated the most forward possible in order to balance the floating line. On the opposite when sailing downwind the wind is lifting the stern so everyone “squeeze” to the back. Let’s say, as it is, that the apparent wind of the AC75s are always upwind. So in fact it makes more that sense that, considering also the very high apparent wind speed, that the rudder lifts the stern. If it doesn’t do that… look at American Magic takeoff 3 years ago

    Last cup LR hade a great yacht on normal winds for slow high mode. Seen this strenght was not enough for winning cup and going more extremely in design for speed? 🙏 next cup LR is strong back with great young sailors. LR design is nice like kiwi design! Then kiwi Bernasconi is also an italin root designer🤷 Go kiwis and get this cup back to NZ. LR was a great challenger in NZ AC36... we need LR and french.

  • @markfisher7962

    Question: on these AC75's, is the rudder foil lift manually controlled, or is it controlled by autopilot with a requested ride height?

  • @markfisher7962
    @markfisher7962 Месяц назад

    Thank you for mentioning ventilation contra cavitation. Ventilation occurs when both a) pressure on one part of the foil is below 1 bar and b) the low pressure area reaches the surface. Lift is suddenly and dramatically reduced. Cavitation occurs when the pressure on one part of the foil is below the vapor point of the fluid. It is far more severe, and can tear even bronze apart. While the lifting portion of these foils seem to be intended to be fully submerged, in practice its tip is almost always above the surface, threatening ventilation.

    Great discussion and insight. Aerospace engineering through and through. It is clear that efficiency over the water with foils is the future of sailing and power boating so we need to make the systems that make it easier and safe common place with international standards a cornerstone of this technology. Good work

    I dont understand why Britannia’s VMG downwind is so much greater than the Italian boat…the brits are running much deeper angles down breeze. Luna Rossa does appear to point a little higher upwind in light to moderate airs…

    Thanks for this video. On Luna Rossa, the mainsail traveler is in the hands of the helmsmen. If I understood Oakley Marsh's speech correctly, could the problem be caused by a forgetfulness of who was steering at the time?

    My take thus far is that Luna Rossa appears to be more maneuverable and agile, and Brittania seems to have been specifically constructed to be an absolute missile in the upper wind range. While not as agile as the Italian boat, the brits appear to be a powerhouse going downwind.
