Impromptu - For Messiaen Quartet (2024) by Jared E. Davis
Impromptu (2024)
This piece was written as an improvisation on paper. The past few years I have been deeply involved in Atonal improvisation. So much so, I wrote a book on it called “Atonal Improvisation and Jazz”. I approached the composition of this piece in the exact same manner as I would have approached an improvisation on my instrument. I thought of a starting note and structure, and improvised from that on paper with ideas from the book. The piece, like an improvisation, is not perfect, but what I wrote is what I wrote, and it cannot be changed.

“How to actually play over Giant Steps” Part 8, in this video I break down a simple strategy that can be used when using Messiaen Mode 3 over the changes. Okay this is the last part lol I noticed there was some confusion behind my lack of clarity in part 7, so I hope this reaches the people who dismissed the idea of using Messiaen modes over the changes as something bad and not jazz like. How to actually play over “Giant Steps” part 7. In this video I show you how you can use a single Messiaen Mode over different groupings of chords. B mode 3 for maj7, Bb mode 3 for dom7, and A mode 3 for min7. I also take a solo at 300bpm using this concept. Please watch parts 1-6 first :) This one was a bonus to shake off any doubts people have about using Messiaen modes over the changes. Hope...

It's probably safer to say that it's the attack that is better articulated with the fingers, but not impossible. Also, players that use a pick wouldn't be as likely to come up with those types of ideas because they're not as comfortable with a pick, like 3 nps ideas. Still, that doesnt mean they're impossible, just like the creator of the video demonstrates.

Wouldn't it sound better if you hybrid picked these lines? Yes I know, you're just trying to prove that it can be done with JUST a pick. But I think if you were to replicate it like he does, a hybrid picking technique could achieve the same level of clarity and syncopation. Just because it is possible doesn't mean it's the best option; you look like you're having a hard time keeping the time whereas Matteo looks beyond comfortable in his demonstration. It's hard to say that this is a good job because personally, if I spent enough time trying to prove Matteo wrong, I could do the same lick with just a pick, rushing it, and making it sound not like music but just noise, just to say it can be done. Perhaps if you spend even longer, trying to master this one lick, you could clean it up, slowing the tempo, etc. But I feel like Matteo's picking technique is still superior since there's almost no fuss and just pure rhythm and a solid conveyance of musicality with his technique. I also think Matteo wasn't trying to be literal because if he wanted to, I'm sure he could just add multiple string picks (polyphonic phrases) in and around his arpeggio making it literally impossible (without the use of hybrid picking).

The line played with the pick is the same notes, but sounds not remotely as smooth. It doesn't contradict Beato, although I do think Roy Marchbank might be able to get it closer, because he's the smoothest speed picker on Earth. But for a normal person to match Mancuso's smooth speed, I'll just say I'm not holding my breath.

@@jareddavismusic Thanks for your brilliant "insight", but I was merely addressing the question you tried to answer with the video; is it possible to play the same line with a pick. If you can't stand to see people comparing two performances of the same notes, maybe don't post videos where the whole point was to compare two performances. Duh. 🙄

Wonderful. This is a great explanation and I didn't know he used Slonimsky Thesaurus. I love these types of movements in music by thirds, there's so much you can do with a freakin' third I mean who knew? When I was looking at the chord changes and it first hit me that all the different chords when seperated by their qualities are all a major third apart I seriously had my mind blown. Isn't it crazy how music theory is such a sound puzzle in so many ways? Everything just fits, that's why I love music. Then of course beyond the theory, music sounds great!

Also for anyone frustrated with remembering Messiaen mode No.3 on the fly, I just think of it as a major 7 add 9 chord with a Minor triad add 4 starting from the minor 3rd. So Messiaen mode No.3 on B would be a B major 7 add 9 (B, Db, Eb, Gb, Bflat) smashed together with a D minor add 4 (D, F,G,A) all in the space of one octave. Quick trick I thought of.

Thank you! I’m happy you like it:) There are so many cool things to discover in music and in GS! I think it’s best to think of mode 3 as 3 tetra chords of whole-half-half, that are a major third away. But yeah it’s also cool to see what other kinds of structures you can separate it into!

Well, you are right in this case. But in general you can do more when playing with fingers than with a pick. Which makes sense, because you actually have 5 picks when playing with fingers.

5 is definitely more than 1, I don’t like having long fingernails personally.

No, the 5 fingers are not equal to one pick, since you cannot alternate easily (except for some bass thumb techniques). Matteo needs to use 3 fingers to play 3NPS scales as fast as a pick.

These are some of the dumbest people on the planet I swear. Distortion actually makes playing clean harder in some cases and rarely makes anything easier and compression is not cheating. These people need another lobotomy because the first one was obviously half assed
