Let's just say that Scipio Africanus is the Hannibal of Rome, that man is essentially going to do something as crazy as crossing the Alps, but reversed onto Hannibal... What makes him a fascinating character is that he's been facing Hannibal since he was seventeen years old, after all, he was alongside his father in Ticinus, and as such, studied Hannibal throughout the Second Punic War. Also, a fascinating "subplot" Oversimplified leaves out for the sake of simplifying things (duh) is that Carthage wasn't just watching while all this happened, to aid Hannibal's campaign, they sent an army to take Ortigia, an island to the south of Italy... If they succeeded, they would've provided Hannibal with extra resources and men beyond the ones he raised on his own, but Rome didn't want to risk losing such a strategically important territory, so they sent the greatest general alive they had to prevent that, Marcus Claudius Marcellus, nicknamed "The sword of Rome". And just like his name conveys, he prevented that from happening because the carthagenian generals he had to face were considerably inferior to Hannibal. Of course, it wasn't so easy either... the Siege of Syracuse happened, which is an important city in the island that favored Carthage and didn't want to be conquered by Rome. In it, Marcellus had to face the inventions of the renowned mathematician and inventor Archimedes, who came up with some weapons that were ahead of its time to defeat the invading roman ships... But, despite this, the city eventually fell in the upcoming days due to overconfidence and military hiccups, resulting in the popular event where a roman soldier took Archimedes's life after the old man refused to stop doing his math studies and go with him to meet Marcellus. Carthage failing to take over Ortigia and Scipio getting his crazy venture accepted by the roman senate, is what kickstarted the downfall of Hannibal's campaign... I can't wait for part three.
