ON the EDGE! - NAPOLEON PASS CLIFF HANGER & Wanderlodge Mtn High Rally Jeepers 2024 Summer Ep12 4K
Lou's Jeep was literally teetering "On the Edge" 😳 at a steep angle. Judge for yourself how close he and his sweet wife came to going completely OVER that "cliff" - in this second Jeeping tour of the Bluebird Wanderlodge 2024 Rocky Mountain High rally. It was a cloudy rainy morning as we rolled past the Tin Cup Cemetery turnoff, had some fun at the ruins of the Gold Cup Mine, then continued up a slippery wet and extremely off-camber trail over Napoleon Pass. During that climb Lou’s Red Jeep slid right to the edge of a precarious and highly risky position. Thankfully, due to everyone's awesome teamwork and Silver’s amazing ability the day was saved. Those WET conditions and steep angles ce...

That mild muscle pain dictated a short hike through the first deep area, and I will save a longer visit for the next time we’re in Zion NP. After that brief hike, I rode the Lectric E-Bike back down the hill from the last Bus Stop to our Watchman Campground site. Starting at about 5 min into...

With limited fresh water and no dump station, this campground isn’t worth the drive or fee IMO.
Nice ride!
Nice, challenging and everyone made it back in one piece - a good combo!
A fun amd wet day! I bought a new tire and rim. I have a spare to and on the back. I went riding this weekend over to Pitkin. Had lunch at the "Stumbling Moose" bar. We need to do that next year. A 45 mile ride round trip over Cumberland and back. Easy and beautiful!
Yes, great fun it was. An onboard spare tire means you’ll likely never need one again 😄. Love the “Stumbling Moose” name, sounds like a mandatory T-Shirt purchase.
Maaaaan that spot where Lou was stuck was WAY more off-angle than the video looked. I should have taken some pix, but it was a pretty hairy situation!
Wow, that thing is sweet
Thanks! I have really enjoyed rehabbing it!
nice video Van!!
@@bwinter2625 Thanks Brad. You would’ve loved tagging along with me this year & your Cherokee would’a fit in perfect with Andy’s.
Kongo Cage is now Metalcloak if anyone was looking for it.
@@jackcapella2707 YES indeed Jack with some updates and higher pricing, of course. The catwalk is no longer included, but can be purchased separately. Watch for special MetalCloak offers like % Off deals & free shipping around major holidays also.
So many BMC-37's there. I'm rather surprised!
I always enjoy your travelogs, Van. Especially since I will probably never tour around the US in the summertime. Have to save those days for the snowbirding experience. Keep 'em coming.
Thanks for taking me along.
Nice and pretty drive
Thanks Brad. Several at the rally said this video helped them save the many unnecessary miles of going around over Monarch Pass. Two awesome Jeep runs in-the-can, including one hair raising save yesterday. Coach heater getting a workout 😳
It's Craig from cripple creek rv. Found your channel I'll keep checking it out! Safe travels!
That's a pretty drive over scenic Highway 12. We've done it a couple of times in our coach but it's always been from the Torrey side up and over to Bryce NP, never from Bryce down towards Torrey. You should have stopped at the Burr Trail Grill (BTR), is the food is excellent. When we stay at Capital Reef NP we always take the Jeep for a drive over there just to grab lunch and then hit the Burr Trail back to Torrey. Also too bad the Jeep was giving you issues, there's a cool Jeep trail near that campground that you stayed in that takes you up over the mountain and drops you into Capital Reef. It's a very scenic trail.
Morning Van! Thanks for taking us along, but your right, too many people!
Glad you like it! Too many people on that hike was my fault, as I waited until our last weekend. It is a good morning! We are planning a Colorado Red Cone Jeep run. Yet another weekend “event” 😮 but this time dictated by my passenger’s schedule.
Way to go Van! I'm about to turn 65 and in pretty good shape. I spent my career in the commercial roofing industry as a technical rep/estimator so was on probably over10,000 roofs. Heights not a problem but OMG some of those climbs are insane. All I could think of where's OSHA, and I started when safety was an afterthought. Great job and keep the updates coming. ps - I'm a WOG member and met you briefly at the eclipse rally
Thankful to be a senior who can still do things like AL. Like you, I dealt with heights my entire working career. However, this was different. Thanks for following along!
We were just up at Bryce Canyon a few weekends ago. Such wonderful camping and bicycle riding on the shared use trail, but darn it we didn't go for any nice, long hikes like you did. Maybe next time. Thanks for recording and sharing your hike. I got to enjoy viewing it and experiencing it vicariously.
Glad you enjoyed it! The NP Service made Zion & Bryce much more accessible with the addition of shared use paths. Our Lectric cycles got a workout and avoided the bus crowds, mostly. Was my first Bryce visit and we’ll be back despite all the people.
I could just drive around out there forever.
Thanks for taking us along Van!!great ride, great video!
Thanks Randy. An uneventful 2 legs except when I went to put the jacks down @ Navajo Lake, and their fuse was blown. Didn’t put that in the video. A quick run to NAPA in Cedar City and problem solved.
Beautiful area, although we generally avoid it in the middle of the summer as it's too hot for us 😲 We've driven RV's through the Mt. Carmel tunnel about 10 times over the past 30+ years of RV'ing with 3 different coaches. A 30' gasser, 38' DP and about 6 times with our current 40' coach. Never an issue although they make us disconnect our Jeep. 🤔 Which makes no sense as it is so much smaller and goes where the coach does. 😉. They told me it's because of the switchbacks, but those switchbacks are not that tight, much less than say Teton Pass which we've done with the Jeep connected. Still a pretty and scenic drive. Mike
@@zmotorsports62 Next vid will be coach ride-along thru the Tunnel, on our way North. On that move I felt much better having done the dry-run shown in this video. We too had to disconnect our “little” Jeep. Loved our Watchman CG, though the 30a service was a challenge with the warm low elevation Summer temps.
Another nice video Van. Can’t get enough of the Zion scenery.
Thanks! The contrast between upper and lower Zion is amazing.
Since all that campground has is a dinky lake and water....sometimes...."Currently water system is turned off and unavailable. A temporary filling station has been brought in, but supplies are limited. Please plan to bring your own water"...I don't bother with it.
@@larrywiddis470 Haven’t been back in several years. Even then, swimming (or falling off a SUP) was something to be avoided as the lake water quality was murky at best. Entire Flag area has a cracked aquifer so well water has always been hard to come by. Good BYO tip.
Im thinkin about doing this in my f150 tremor with full aftermarket skids. Have lots of offroad experience.. do you think it needs 35s or is it too tight for a truck?
Is a short trail with lots of small rocks. However the obstacles were not that tall last year. Take your time and you’ll be fine. The scenery around that lake is worth the effort. Watch those mosquitoes at the end of wheeled trail end, they were vicious when I visited.
@@NoGasWelcomeAboard we ended up NOT doing slide lake YET. The fire issue would keep us from camping that night. We did, in fact, fish the Arkansas outside of Leadville and then took the tremor over Mosquito pass. Not highly recommended in a stock suv/truck unless you have higher clearance, skids and a set of skills. Knocked the skids a couple times but came through relatively unscathed. Beautiful views up there. Have you been?
When I did Slide Lake last year, the lake was deserted and fish were jumping after the mosquitos. My hike was spur of the moment thing so no equipment. The trail was hike-in only between the parking lot and lake, as shown in the video. Also did Mosquito Pass last year, but was a little early and Fair Play side of pass was blocked by snow - ruclips.net/video/0lj421HGJXM/видео.htmlsi=mnZGGFdmL66LHuaC. Am in general vicinity of that area right now & planning on revisiting Devils Punchbowl this next week. If you haven’t seen last years “9-Point U-Turn” video, check it out. Glad I had my BIL with me on that one. A little later in season this year & it’s rained allot. So expecting more open trails 🙂…
Congrats!
Thank you… Definitely a first and only AL hike for me 😄
Congratulations 🎉.
Thanks! Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Great bbq place in Springdale.
Thanks! Sorry I missed it, but now on “the list”…
another great adventure! stay cool!
Thanks! Just the beginning to an abbreviated Summer Season…
🎉🎉🎉
Thanks. Chris is having a Rally next month in CO. Check the WOG for details. Should be lots of tech stuff as well as great wheeling!
Does anyone know where I can purchase the top? That he has on there. End the roof rack thank you
See my update in the video description. The company that made the one shown in the video was bought out by Adventure Rack Systems, a division of Metal Cloak.
Ideal set up!! Such a good video, thank you!
Yes, if I didn’t have the motorhome I’d convert Silver and do some Overlanding!
Makes me nostalgic for my parents. They had a couple of Wanderlodge Coaches during the late 1980's. I would vist them at various rallies around the country, like the "Rally in the Valley" in Perry GA. I'd like to think their coaches are still on the road. That one at 2:36 looks just like one they had.
Know exactly how you feel. When it came time to sell my parents coach that I inherited, it was difficult because of all the memories we had together in that one.
Looks fun
Incredible views with some challenges thrown in, just another perfect Jeeping day! 🙂
Awesome video, I had doubts about 2dr with tent and this video proves it's ideal and more options for manual transmission in 2dr.. what a fantastic setup
Spur of moment decision to ask them if I could video their rig, they were awesome. For Overlanding, would definitely consider this setup.
I have a 2016 6 speed manual transmission 2 door Rubicon and I just love it
Good job. Fantastic work.
Thanks! That setup was very efficient and compact. See the video description for an update on who makes it now.
Uh oh. I bought a 2 door JK just last month and I'm starting to get ideas....
Ever since I saw it, me too. If I didn’t have the motorhome…
@1:03 that’s a power steering pump going out. No biggie.
Beautifully done. Looking forward to similar build.
If I didn’t have the coach, would definitely consider doing this with my 2Dr. Manufacturer of this rack was bought out, but it’s still available from new company.
Were did u get the tent and roof rack at please
Full details listed in the Description (tap on video title while viewing). Construction, fit and finish is darn near perfect if one is looking for a compact totally functional setup for a 2Dr. Especially like their windshield crossover-step. IF I was looking for an overlanding setup to replace my bus, this would be a great starting point. Not cheap, but is anything these days?
2 door Jeep wrangler
Do you have dimensions or drawings for this? Nice table
Thanks, not pretty but highly functional! No, sorry I do not. Years ago I literally threw the table together from spare materials (hence the chip board side walls). Since this video, I have cut the original table down to reduce weight & size while maintaining the same 1” thick landing zone surface that still accurately duplicates real table action. Current basic table measurements are: 29-1/2 W x 24” D with the patten surface at 22” W x 18” D. Sidewalls are the same height as the alligator wall. I find this size to be perfect, as my tosses have become more accurate over the years. It all folds compactly and is easier to load in my RV, since the weight is also reduced. I hope this helps!
What size lift and tires did you have on this trail?
My earlier answer this thread to @Marty1911’s query answers that more fully… in short I currently run with 35’s & a “published” 2” Mopar lift (it’s really closer to 3” all around). A few of those shelf drop offs might’ve been slightly easier with a longer wheelbase 4-door. However I wouldn’t try those without some sort of stinger mounted in the hitch receiver, to protect the spare tire & the rear door tire mount. My stinger is a simple ball mount, turned “up” that extends the width of the spare tire. It has a few scrapes on it!
@NoGasWelcomeAboard Is your felt directly ontop of the 5/8 plywood or do you have some kind of padding between the two?
Sorry so long to answer… Have tried several variations. I try to duplicate the bounce and feel of my local casino tables, which are fairly hard with little bounce. First, I use birch plywood as it is harder than standard plywood. Then I experimented with various underlayments. Closest I could get is one or two layers of thin microfiber “felt” under my microfiber patterned top. When I tap my finger on the casinos table, the feels is very similar. When fastening the cover, pay attention to how tight you stretch the material. Too much results in a trampoline effect. Hope this helps…
Beautiful y’all are amazing people! 😊❤😊

Crew chief at UH in 78 / 79 they were heady days. A fantastic jet loved working on the 111’s. I also crewed A10’s at Myrtle Beach in 77 / 78 when they first came intro the USAF. Maintenance friendly to say the least.
@Jonny5443 The 111’s speed & capabilities in the air were amazing. At the time and to this day, its pure speed on the deck was unmatched. However, it took many many hours of maintenance for every one that it flew. Crew Chiefs & Pilots have a special relationship. Those cocky young pilots who borrowed your jets may not’ve told you directly, but we all appreciated what you did to make it happen. Thank you!
Keep them coming. Appreciate it so much.

Yup, morning coffee is a traditional event at most rallies. As someone who's used to a campfire morning coffee at Q, this was a treat (and the donuts were a treat)...
Thanks again...
It was a great rally. The day after was sunny, naturally. Departing soon. Then it's time to get ready for our Summer travels...
My husband is there in Traveller. ‘87 FC35 from Florida.
Cool! Did you see your coach on this park pass-thru?
Thanks again for the videos. Looking forward to the 450 video.
Love everything about the 450 and looked them seriously a decade ago. However my NF style of camping dictated something more compact & maneuverable. Our 380 has been the perfect compromise. Bob’s coach is parked directly across from ours - she’s beautiful! That episode will be out in the next few weeks as I’m trying to get rally specific videos out during the actual rally. Thanks for watching!
Great documentation of machines that have provided wonderful memories for multiple generations…nice job as always Van, thanks for sharing.
You’re so right! Have met more than one multiple generation family here at the rally (like father-son), both who own Wanderlodges. Very few coach brands can claim that distinction.
