Basenjis are not for first time owners. Their training is vastly different from training majority of dogs. They’re very sensitive breeds and need a lot of patience and exercise. Once trust is formed.. which takes a while it’s a lot easier. This video is trash.

I think all these things mentioned are very much true in general basis, but there is alot of differences between basenjis. More than most breeds basenji traits have huge variety between individuals. Bitches and males are very different interms of walking without leash. Males tend to have much higher hunting needs so they probaply will run away if they see movement. I have two basenji males, 4 and 6 year olds and they have very different personalities. Traits that both have are: love sleeping and eating, watching wildlife and other dogs through window or sitting in balcony and playfullnes when not in passive mode. Both love long hikes in forrest or any where in nature but they are oke also if weather is not good and they get to only visit neary tree twice a day. Biggest differences are: younger loves to swim and is very active to play with other dogs except big, black and furry ones. Other only accepts other dogs if they are small bitches and puppies. Younger also if friend to any people that are willing to say hello to him and propably would trade homes if provided some meat by other people. Older is very family oriented and does not really like people that are out of its inner circle of people. No problem with our 2 year old kid or cats for eather one of them. Both are very healthy and require no taking care of fur or other things. Both have been moderately easy to train but they tend to choose when they want to do things I want. They both love to go outside when its 30 degrees C heat but can handle -20C winter conditions too with winter coats. Feel free to ask anything! In my opinion, Basenjis never lost the ability to bark. I think they bever barked. They are one of the dog breeds that are most wolflike, and wolves don't bark, except as puppies. But like Basenjis, adult wolves howl, whine, and make other sounds, except for barking. Crate training is recommended for young dogs to keep them from getting into mischief when the owner isnt home. In my experience with my own Basenjis, after they are about two years old they can be left alone in many cases if they have been trained. Positive reinforcement is the only training that works with these intelligent, independent animals. And the rewards are many! It's not the Basenjis that are unsuitable, it's badly informed owners who aren't suitable. Not everyone can appreciate their many wonderful traits. If that's you, get a golden retriever or a poodle.

I adopted my basenji from a rescue dog kennel. She was very young and had been removed from a family by child welfare for chewing a baby's fingers. I had no idea what I was in for. She was very stubborn, however extremely intelligent. I became a falconer at 12 when I found an injured red-tailed hawk in the road and later, I adopted a wolf malamute hybrid. If you want to know what an animal needs, they will let you know, if you are patient enough to learn. Once, while walking my basenji, we came upon a lost basenji stray. Both dogs took to each other as if they were old friends. My basenji had never liked other dog breeds. I managed to capture the dog and took him to my vet to check for a chip. We contacted the owner and she said she did not want him back, so I had two wonderful basenjis.

Great overview of the basenji characteristics that some folks might not be ready for. I live alone with my basenji, so he gets plenty of undivided attention, but I also leave him home while I'm at work--thus far, he seems very comfortable, even on the rare occasion when I leave him alone for 8-9 hours.
