@@automatalearninglabI do wonder whether exactly we can laugh at AI for not being able to count the R’s in strawberry. As codeincomplete said, it’s like if I asked you to spell some random mandarin word just off of how it sounds. It would be hypocritical I think after all to laugh at them for this, when they (the AI) are so fluent in a language we are comparatively embarrassingly bad at. Looking at a giant wall of math equations/code and being able to not just be able to perfectly understand it like you or I would English, but then be able to translate it back to us, to a language that is effectively its secondary language. Further, we can look at how we laugh at AI that can see an image of a panda and say it’s a panda, but when noise is added, it thinks it’s an Antelope. We ignore the fact that humans have fallen to optical illusions so often, and when we do, we just shrug it off as, “Oh the beauties of humanity.” The random noise covers up the defining features the AI looks for. Similarly, some illusion that shows a creature that looks exactly like both a rabbit and a goose throws us off because it messes with the defining features we use to identify as well.
