The Ordinary Athlete.

If you like biking, travelling on two wheels and general outdoors-ness, then you are in the right place.
I've been riding bikes "properly" for 20+ years with a passion for challenges and seeing how a mere mortal can fit adventures and goals into their life. When it comes to gear and equipment, I'm all about function over form, substance over style. I do not have huge financial reserves so my gear has to always be worth the money.
In the past I was very into my running, but as I'm built for comfort and not for speed my knees and joints general don't favour it anymore.
If any of my videos make you laugh, cry, despair or are actually of use, you're welcome!

We're nearly there friends. Come with me as I document a typical trip round my local, "mile munching" route that I frequent in Winter when the countryside turns to liquid clay. No droning on from me in this one, just sounds from the day. Enjoy, The OA. #mtblife #asmr

Cadair Idris and Llyn Cau - A Welsh Mountain Walk
What a great video, so well explained , it gives me more confidence than I had to give it a go myself thank you
How was it with your mtb? Wouldn't it be difficult to use with a dropper post?
Tricky I'd guess, cos of the attachment to the post bottom.
Looks like a good trail , where was this mate ?
Near Gloucester. maps.app.goo.gl/zqpbLzpnvBxQJQ5f8
@@theordinaryathlete thanks man ill def check it out sometime I live in the south west so when I have time ill have a look . I see you are on a different nike ,you had a red trek ?
I was in the red shorts.
75.6 MPH?!! Thats 1.6 MPH higher than hurricane force!! How was Eunice not classed as a cyclone??
The bag in the beginning - that is hanging on your saddle - is it a large one aswell or medium?
Mine tries too spin left and right
Excellent demo man!
Excellent comment 👌
Thanks for the video. Was the pumping resistance on the 2.8” tyre reasonable or maddening?
About as hard as a regular track pump. It's not bad at all.
@@theordinaryathlete thanks, all the info I need to commit. Spent so much $ on useless mini pumps.
Have a great ride. I dont do so much anymore. Really need to get the enthusiasm back but struggling.
Yes, I've got one of these as well. Still in excellent condition, as is the pouch! I've been looking on the market for a thinner, lighter, multitool, but I might stick with The Alien. As you said, it's a beast and has lasted, 'The test of time!'. I think I bought mine in 1997, that's how old it is 🙌
Thanks for the video! Helpful explaining the diagram
Glad it was useful.
The little spring clip on top of the calipers is actually removable and can be re-inserted after fitting the calipers.
I think I show pretty well it is removable. It will be impossible to insert afterwards.
on my Large Marlin 8 with the same dropper, there was no need to remove the top rivnut (fortunately for me!)
Love that, I didn't like loosing the option to cage mount on the seat tube , but no other option.
how are they doing ?
Superb, fitted to all our bikes. Not really showing any major signs of wear although I've been off the bike pretty much for a year through unforseen circumstances.
So in the instructions it says "attach actuator barrel to the seat post actuator" but you didn't do that bit (that I saw). Did the cable stay attached alright to the seatpost?
I can't find the manual online to check what it says at the mo. But where I attach @05:47 in the video I didn't remove the cable from th dropper again after that. Is yours internally routed, wonder if the process is slightly different?
Great video but in order to avoid the 3 hours it took you, follow the handy tip in the manual and put the inner cable into it, slot through the side of the frame and once stuck inside the frame, push the cable through, managed to get the inner cable end to pop out through the hole 😊
The 3 hours was tongue in cheek, it was probably more like 10 minutes.
I now know what I'm doing in the morning
A got this gor my trail bike as my old ethirtteen one was broken a got it on sale for 39.99 chain Reaction
That's an absolute bargain 👌
I got it for 29.99, dropped even more
@@benjamincaspi3181 brilliant a got a replacement cartridge as well for 2 quid for when it needs it it's a great dropper post
It's now 22.50 with code EXTRA10, I've ordered another to have as spare!! Dropping like mad lol (pun intended)
You can't get a decent standard post for that, that's mad.
I have this tool! The bag disintegrated years ago but I still love it - a little heavy - thanks for the video 😊
My bag is more glue than material now I've repaired it so many times. Thanks for the kind comment.
Hi bro, you put the right numbers in your review, I think may be the Giyo GP-89 it's a contender for the Topeak Twin Turbo, but nobody has done a video about it
Thanks, I'll take s look at it.
best instal vid by far . cheers
Thank you for the kind comment. Happy riding!
Nice review mate, thanks for your efforts, ordered a large one.
Excellent.
Very helpful video thanks. I will do mine maybe next week now 👍👌
Awesome, glad it was of help.
Thank you. Mine's the internal model, but your video was still very helpful!
Glad it was of use.
Very helpful - thank you! Did you really need a puller to get the crank arms off? Thought a wiggle would get them off since the spline isn't tapered?
I remember trying to wiggle them off and they wouldn't budge. I already had the puller so decided to use it. I guess you may be lucky and not need one.
@@theordinaryathlete Confirmed - need a puller, tried earlier today. Seems the spline "wedges" at the bottom.
great vid - do you 100% need the crank puller tool?
Thanks for the kind words. No, you may get lucky and be able to wiggle it off. But I have found this to not be the case in the past. Happy riding!!
i'll let you know how get on!@@theordinaryathlete
Thank you mate
No worries.
Great video! We have a tyre removal/installation tool that might be of interest to you.. check out our short step by step video ruclips.net/video/m85Pd7chRiY/видео.htmlsi=TvyCI0N0P8dIQ3Zl
Hey, enjoyed watching your video, easy no nonsense approach. perfect, cheers
Thanks for the kind words. I hope to get back on the bike soon after a bit of a break and make some more.
Nice review man. Description says Size (L x W x H) 18.5 x 11 x 11 cm which are the dimensions of the Medium. But obviously you had the Large in the video. 👍
Do you know I'd never noticed that, thanks. Updated description. Happy riding. 👍🏻
@@theordinaryathlete 😄👌👍
Please help, my ascend II won't stay down or up regardless of how much I up or down the tension. Surely it has to be one or the other, not both :)
Is that fully installed it does that? To check if the mechanism itself is good I would place the cable of the release mechanism in a completely straight line to rule out cable rubbing inside the outer, have zero tension in the line. I will need to look at mine again in a few hours, as it's been a few months since I've looked at it, to refresh my mind how it functions. Then I'll reply again. Edit: is there a good pressure in the post when you push against it?
BB7, justo lo que buscaba. Gracias y saludos desde Chile!!!
Gracias, no hay problema, feliz ciclismo . 👍🏻
You helped me greatly as I stared at my caliper after taking out the two horizontal bolts and everything fell on the shed floor 😅
Ahh, that fun moment when gravity grabs your bike parts! Thanks for the comment.
I would listen to this song even if I didn't have to fix my bike!
Ha Kevin Macleod is a legend of royalty free music, a true gentleman!
Bro that one little tip helped so much
Thanks dude.
Terrific video! Thank you!
Thanks a lot. I need to get making some more videos, hit a bit of an off the bike period at the mo. Happy riding. 👍🏻
I watched several other BB7 videos before finding yours...which is half as long and twice as good! Both brakes are replaced now, the only hitch was I accidentally left the spacer in the first time, and it took me a while to figure out why I couldn't push the pads in. Thanks again, I immediately subscribed. :)
Brake pad replacement time again...your help did it again...I had to file down the nibs this time, good thing you suggested it!
Had the same issue with aftermarket brake pads. The original Avids are very good, some pads are more expensive but not necessarely better. Cleanig up the bike and the calipers, screws and bit and pieces would have helped also. 🤣
Ha ha, this bike rarely gets a clean the poor thing. It's my workhorse.
How do you fit the saddle please let me know
Hello, loosen the two bolts with hex bits to allow the plate atop the post to move up. Place saddle rails between the two pieces of the camp. Tighten the rwo bolts up again. Adjust front / rear bolt to adjust the incline / decline of the saddle to your preference.
"Torque to three knuckles tight." Got it, ready to get to work. Thanks
Good lad. Happy riding. 👍🏻
helpful. thanks bro.
You're very welcome.
Brilliant, well decribed video. I have a ascend 2 to fit to my sons bike and the ascend to mine and this viseo has definitely helped. Keep up the good work 👌
What a lovely comment. Cheers chap. Happy riding to you both.
Standing climb wear bracket bearings out faster ( seated climb is better)
Agreed, they do seem to be pretty low quality also. I have 1 more spare bb then I'll look at a different bb and crank set. Thanks for commenting 👍🏻 happy riding.
I suppose we should stay seated for all the rough & rocky bits, drops, jumps, washouts and step-ups too. Gotta look after that bottom bracket 🥴🙄🤔
merci
Merci mon amis.
My lever is very hard to push, any ideas how to make it easier to push or activate
Hmm, its going to be down to the friction of the cable inner and outer. Make sure the cable isnt taking a really extreme bend, particularly down by the bottom bracket. You could try squirting some lubricant down the end of the cable outer to let the inner move more freely.
UUHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMMM YIIIEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS
😂
@@theordinaryathlete They just arrived and i had the same reaction
Nice
Waiting for my new ones to come!
Very good item for the money.
Really gave me a good idea on what to buy, thanks
Glad it helped. It's a great pump, I even used it to do my motorcycle tyres.
👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻💝
Thanks dude. Happy riding!
thanks bro nice review
No worries, happy riding.
Ever use heat to loosen the bottom bracket up? Mine is appearing to be stuck even putting all my weight on it.
I've never had to, but I've heard stories of them REALLY getting stuck. I can't see how a little heat would hurt, especially heat gun temps, not flame.
The visor is not fixed. It can be set in three positions.
Yeah I realised this when I hit it by accident once and it moved. Was worried about snapping it off when it was new!
