Does Legacy Ninjas Need Ponder? - November 2024
I ran a Ponderless Ninjas list through a legacy league in November 2024 and faced a lot of UB decks as well as some other matchups. It was great to show off cool new ninjas tech from MH3 and Duskmourn.

BUG Fair Nic Fit - Match 2 - vs. RUG Lands
Honestly thinking about trying to build a WUBG take on EDH Fit, but I'm not sure if it's worth it in 2024. Any thoughts?
So interesting in G1M1 where even after seeing your hand with Wasteland, they fetch for an Underground Sea when they have no other lands in hand
The rescaminator mana is so tight that they might have to. Since it seemed like they have troll, maybe swamp would be better to get the USea the following turn but then they're very far from Murktide. That deck is definitely vulnerable to Wasteland overall though.
Hey this was really cool to see it in action
I'm glad you enjoyed it. After some discussion in the discord Animar probably requires more building around or it's probably better to just replace it. However RUG as a color combo has some promise.
I just wanted you know I appreciate all the nic fit content over the years your the best
I don't know how much it changes, but G1 against initiative when he hard casts the Solitude you could vial in recruiter, grab charming prince, vial prince in, then flicker the bowmaster. I don't think it changes much there though. Great league!
Kinda shows how many lines the deck has. Overall, that is a bit better than the Recruiter for Bowmaster line I took. (2:05:11)
This is my favourite Stompy list! Nice video! Keep them coming :)
Still enjoyed the video liked and subbed just thought you might play it again at some point and a different approach might help.
I love the deck but I think you kinda missed the mark sometimes. I am not trying to be disrespectful but everytime you cut collected company you diluted your deck you had several advantageous situations and missed opportunities man. Every deck you played drew extra cards all the fables of the mirror breaker loot triggers. Didn't board in surgical Extraction against painter...aether channeled showed why it's in the deck. But my reason for saying this is the goal of your deck is to cast coco and put unfair 3 drops into play. boarding is choosing which three drops are best against the particular deck. For example aether channel wrecks sneak and show especially the show and tell side. But essentially you played the creatures instead of playing the spell that puts two of them in at instant speed. Play dork try and cast collected company with force back up or when shields are down.
Thanks for the feedback. No doubt I'm a novice at this deck.
What are your thoughts on Orcish Bowmasters? Can you see them functioning well in this deck?
I think it will be a Deadguy Ale staple. The card fills a lot of holes in the deck and is particularly strong in some of the weakest matchups like 8 Cast and Delver. I also could potentially see it changing the deck to rely on something like Staff of the Storyteller as a card advantage engine instead of/in addition to Dark Confidant since Bowmasters play nicely with Staff. Overall, I'm pretty excited for the card although I sort of suspect it may be delayed in coming to MTGO (there's an announcement in ~2 weeks).
@NicFitMTG hadn't thought of playing Staff in my build, though Bowmasters could certainly change my mind on that (because it just looks that good). I know it'll pair nicely with my Graveyard Trespassers, since it punishes the opponent for getting extra cards in hand to deal with my 2-3 for 1 Werewolf (the Ward alone on that card is hysterical).
@@nicholasfarrell5981 We will have to see. It will definitely have an impact on the Deadguy archetype and it should be a good upgrade.
1:38 instead of wastelanding you should have played the marsh flats and searched for a badlands.
Ya, at 1:37:51 I assume you mean. I tend to agree in retrospect and I think while I saw that play at the time it was definitely the better play. I thought by wastelanding I might have an extra turn but that was wishful thinking.
Like this build, im still on the fence about cutting baleful strix.. maybe will try your list
I'm back on 2x Strix now. I think it's too good in the Delver/Initiative meta.
Ninjas has been a pet deck of mine and I've had the thought that it matches up well vs white initiative. And seeing you 2-0 it helps confirm my thoughts! Combo decks have always felt like tough matchups. Fluster in the side could be worth a spot or two to help cover that matchup. Appreciate the content!
I'm glad you enjoyed it. The matchup is closer than this league makes it appear. I am 19-18 against initiative with ninjas according to my data although I had a few more losses early while figuring out the matchup. It feels like 60/40 or 55/45. The matchup really hinges on the first 1-2 turns. If they stick an Initiative creature and you can't take the initiative from them, the matchup is hard. However, if you kill their guy and take the initiative, they can lose just as easily. I've found Dystopia to be the best sideboard card against them.
@@cutrategreatness early chalice can be problematic as well. Die roll plays a big part in the matchup I feel for the exact reasons you mentioned above. But if we connect with ninjas it's hard for us to lose just from a pure card advantage point
The Moon Circuit Hacker tech is really sweet. I quite like it.
Thanks, it's illustrated pretty well vs Control at 2:16:25.
Ninjas all the way!!
Looking forward to the video. Thanks for putting in the hours and play.
You still play NiceFit? If going blue I guess Brainstorm is a good pick up since you can put your basic lands back in the deck so you can later fetch them with Veteran explorer.
Why no Marchesa?
I do think it's worth a consideration but a singleton 4 drop is hard to justify. Queen Marchesa seems great on the surface but it can't be powered out by Dark Ritual and unlike Dread Cantor it's a true 4 drop for Bob purposes. The Monarch is also dangerous against control nowadays due to all the Coatls flying around. Long story short, in the matchups where you want Marchesa/Monarch, I think Dread Cantor is better in the current metagame. In a deck that uses other means to power out creatures like moxes or maybe Vials, I would consider it.
You wouldn't have to take out that many cards to make these a premodern deck.
I could see a Recurring Nightmare based premodern deck. Wouldn't Premodern (a format I've never tried) mean no Primeval Titan, no Field, no Riveteers, no evoke elementals. Basically just the core Nic Fit cards of Explorer + Therapy and lands would be left. Long story short though, when building a deck like this, we have to be very mindful of why this is a Legacy deck as opposed to another format. Outside of Veteran, Therapy, and Zenith, there aren't a lot of Legacy cards here.
BG Rock is what this deck looks like in premodern. It is very good.
will pay for sideboard guides for this new deadguy ale - almost done in paper :P
No need to pay. I'll just put it out there when it's closer to done.
@@cutrategreatness you’re amazing thank you :)!
@@cutrategreatness btw is containment priest not an option in this deck
It's an option, but I don't think it's as good as alternatives in this deck. Right now, I think the combination of Surgical and Voidwalker are a little better for a few reasons. Firstly, there's a couple turn 1 decks in the format that are common on MTGO like Reanimator and Oops. This means you need Surgical or Leyline in decks that aren't packing Forces. Also, the fact that Voidwalker can be powered out turn 1 with a Dark Ritual shouldn't be underestimated. That alone can win the game against some graveyard decks. Voidwalker has proven to be excellent from exiling cards that wreck Deadguy like Punishing Fire to just being incidental roadblocks against decks with Loam, Uro, or Dragon Rage Channeler.
@@cutrategreatness thanks for this breakdown really appreciate it :) just finished the deck in paper and bringing it to a local tournament soon, so you have a discord or pateron ?
Yesssss
More Dead Ale content please
Nice list! I miss playing vindicate I don’t think it good enough anymore though
I tried it at first but unfortunately I don't think it's good enough right now. Being able to cast Prismatic Ending on turn 1 -- even if it can't hit lands like Vindicate -- is just exactly what the deck needed.
@@cutrategreatness I sometimes used to play dead guy ale with x2 chrome mox or x2 mox diamond and that made vindicate somewhat more appealing. I probably would just skip that entirely and play pretty much this today
No offense but what is it with ale lists like this focusing on discard like I get it but if modern or legacy has taught us anything it's that discard is pretty bad especially when you consider hidetsugu consumes all and no I'm not saying get rid of your discard if anything be more concise with your discard spells you don't need a lot but what you use will determine how your games end more often than not especially against fairblue decks particularly bant uro decks so run hymn because it's always a 2 for 1 play stoneforge mystic same thing and stuff like kill spells gain a shit ton of value since even if they stick they gotta hold up counter magic mean while your building your board if you have confidant that gets dirty though personally I like esper sentinel for card draw with confidant as backup since it's more this kind of decks speed and with lion sash that gets down right scary especially with kaldra complete
Also neat deck idea if you want more of a better discard cantor build use chains of Mephistopheles and it does nothing against you since your not drawing from confidant you just put it into your hand
This deck has always played hymn and thoughtseize… discard isn’t “bad” in legacy
@@willl793 right like discarding an uro or kroxa is great value. If you believe that your delusional
Early game discard can destroy your opponent's game plan, especially on a mulligan. Thoughtseize gives you the choice of what to discard, and Hymn is random, so the opponent can't choose strategic discards. Certain discard spells are also good in vintage.
I like Toxic Deluge and Pernicious 1/1 split. You probably do not need more.
I'm not sold on Deluge in the current meta. While it's great against small creature decks like D&T and Elves, it doesn't deal with one of the main creatures in the format in Murktide Regent. Deed on the other hand hasn't been this good in a long time. It's a great solution to the Saga decks. Thanks for the tips, though.
cut two explorers and add two snakes. Not playing Brainstorm is criminal.
You're definitely right that the Snakes are great right now although they're hard to make work with only 4 snow basics like this list. Brainstorm is hard to fit into this 60 and I think it's a bit of a different deck if I do. However, once you add 3-4 snakes, 4 Brainstorm, your blue count starts to look good enough for Force of Will. It's a different deck than this one but I think it's definitely workable.
@@cutrategreatness The problem is Nic Fit is not good in the current meta. Everybody runs too many basics and threats are too different to deal with. We dont really have game against Doomsday and the new equipment from Taxes is bs honestly. I wish nic fit was viable as I love it.
@@cutrategreatness This is the list I played in February and it was quite decent. 2 Veteran Explorer 4 Baleful Strix 2 Ice-Fang 1 Ooze 2 Uro 1 Witness 1 Leovold 1 Tracker 1 Meren 1 Questing Beast 4 Therapy 2 GSZ 4 Brainstorm 4 Ponder 1 Sylvan Library 2 Abrupt Decay 1 Assassins Trophy 1 Drown in the Loch 1 Toxic Deluge 1 Deed 2 Jace 2 scIsland 2 scForest 1 scSwamp 2 Bayou 2 Tropical 2 Sea 3 Verdant Catacombs 3 Misty Rainforest 2 Polluted Delta 1 Phyrexian Tower 1 Volrath's Stronghold Side: 4 Force of Will 3 Force of Negation 3 Surgical Extraction 3 Veil of Summer 1 Painful Truths 1 Nissa, Vital Force It would look quite different today but the direction is the best nic fit approach imo. You keep the curve low, you 2for1 with every card.
Cool deck. On that last game. Opponent cannot cast TKS with Magus on the field unless they had a colorless source because TKS requires 1 colorless. Also, if they play Vesuva with Magus on the field they do not get to copy a land and if Magus leaves Vesuva is just a land with no abilities at all and cannot produce mana.
You're right. Some of these interactions are hard to realize in real-time. I'm not typically a moon player and Blood Moon effects are not common in Nic Fit. Still, it's a powerful effect especially in this matchup (Cloudpost) which is normally a bad one for most Nic Fit decks.
Oh boy another vid :D
You should put here the list?
The decklist is in the video description.
first-time youtube has recommended a gem you are great would see more of you
Thanks! I'm glad you like it. Jund Nic Fit seems pretty decent right now. Give it a try!
At 1:18:30 I thought my opponent misplayed but in reality Infernal Tutor without LED has some drawbacks.
Nice vid! ty for sharing. At 13:30 when you cast oko and just made a food, when you could have elked their Mandrills, swung with the Questing Beast, and forced the to trade down with a 3/3. Then you would have passed the turn with ouphe + beast + oko to their goyf.
You are 100% correct. That is definitely a better play.
hi! may i ask you a list for abzan nic fit?
