the reference about testing the mettle of man is about man's resiliance...the cool, badass and funny aspects of his personality aren't at the core of what evil is testing... I like to think they're just a defense mechanism for him but ultimately when he needs to he always steps up to whatever he faces

Well said! I like to think that the "cool, badass, funny" part of his character is a defense mechanism, as well. But, I also like to think that's just who is, too. I think it's both- especially if you look at "AoD" & "Ash vs Evil Dead"(even some of "Evil Dead 2" shows both of these aspects as playing a part as to why he talks & acts the way he does- as do the comics, if you read those). I think it was Bruce Campbell, the genius, himself, that stated something along the lines of, "this guy(Ash) has been to hell & back, so he's not quite "right" in a psychological or emotional way. A lot of his bravado is his own self-preservation/defense mechanism,"... or something of that nature. The guy has PTSD, & it's changed him forever. You look at the original "The Evil Dead," however, & the Ash most people think of just isn't there. The one-liners, the puns, the attitude, etc, don't exist. You might've seen the interview(he's talked about it several times, actually) in which he states that w/each progressive film, his character changes into more of a "wise-cracking badass" than before. He even stated that he asked Sam Raimi after reading the "AoD" screenplay if he's that same guy from the first film, who goes from just trying to survive, to taking that first step towards being the funny, one-liner spewing, kickass survivor of the movie in the second(which is really just a continuation of the first film- the first 15 mins or so acting as a recap, albeit a bit different due to not being able to access copyrights to the first film), to becoming the full-fledged Deadite-slaying badass he eventually becomes in the final film. He said Sam knew it, too; but that it was what the film called for, so they just went w/it... as the character remaining the clueless, scared, simply trying to survive iteration of the character from the first film- & part of the second- would ultimately render him redundant, & w/no changes in his attitude, personality, etc- which, as you stated, would be a more human & realistic response, in the form of a defense mechanism, combined w/the adventuring, "loudmouth braggart" & fun, at first hesitant hero archetype(a fluid description of Ash, lol) that the audience- us big-chin-loving cult classic fans, anyway- find so endearing would've never existed. And his machismo only gets even more ramped up in the "Ash vs Evil Dead" series. It's important to note, I think, that the Jefé's "cool" moments are often accompanied by his hilarious idiocy or slapstick tomfoolery, & frequently include a fair bit of luck. Sometimes. Bruce said the Ash of the first film is completely different than the Ash of the third film(which is, understandably, strange, considering the second film being the same day[and night] as the first; and "AoD" picking up from that same night as the second- & therefore the first night. It's like Ash's character was given a total overhaul over the course of one day, lol. But the testing of the mettle of man is, as you say, not about how badass he is, & what kind of funny quip he can come up with on the spot. It's about man's resilience. It's about his courage in the face of danger, & his willingness to give his all for what is right & what he loves most- even in the face of almost certain death; what Ash ultimately does at the end of the 3 season series(albeit, he is pulled from the wreckage & put into a sort of cryofreeze tank to be thawed out in the future when needed. It reminds me of the song, "The Impossible Dream": To dream the impossible dream. To fight the unbeatable for. To bear with unbearable sorrow. To run where the brave dare not go. To right the unrightable wrong. To be better far than you are. To try when your arms are too weary. To reach the unreachable star. This is my quest, to follow that star. No matter how hopeless, no matter how far. To be willing to give when there's no more to give. *alternate verse: To fight for the right without question or pause. To be willing to die so that honor & justice may live. *alternate verse: To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause. And I know if I'll only be true to this glorious quest, That my heart will lie peaceful & calm when I'm laid to my rest. And the world will be better for this... That one man, scorned & covered with scars Still strove with his last ounce of courage To reach the unreachable star. Hail to the King, baby.😎

Exactly why the people of China and the Uyghur need to make an earth-shaking and seriously violent overthrow of their communist government. There is no God if there is a constant need for justice being brought into the hands of people when the authorities won't do shit.
