    On board 5, one advantage I see to playing low at trick one is that, if you cover with the heart king, the opponents have an exit suit in hearts. If you don't cover, you may create problems for them. Suppose, for example, you duck and East continues hearts (as seems likely). You duck again, ruff, and play ace, king, and a diamond and West wins. A heart or a club return may enable you to get two discards for the spades, so if you guess spades you make it. And, depending on the spade layout, a spade shift may do no better. I doubt either player had anything that specific in mind. Ducking just looks as if it might make the defense harder. West's play of the heart nine was unfortunate, as it made a heart continuation by East impossible.

    9:00 the synrey bots always know to up something on this type of board so they'll play 9 from j9x

    • @JazPlaysBridge
      @JazPlaysBridge 19 дней назад

      Haha but if they play 9 then we can take with the ace, unless East unblocks with the Q then it’s making already (if East hops the Q on the second round we duck it, else we win with the K and bash out another)

  • @psmartin186

    On board 19, (only because you asked): My agreement is that passing over either an opening bid or a response and then re-entering the auction voluntarily shows primary length in the opponent's suit. So I would handle the East hand by passing over one heart. Then, after 2D--P--P, I could choose among double (take-out of diamonds with at least 5 hearts and at least an opening bid), 3C (primary hearts, secondary clubs, and at least an opening bid), or 4C (like 3C but a better hand). Clearly double would be the winning action this time, but I suspect I would bid 4C, which partner would correct to 4H. The logic behind this agreement is that if you weren't willing to bid when the auction was at the one-level, you wouldn't be willing to bid a level higher when the opponents haven't found a fit. "Balancing" makes no sense in a misfit auction. Obviously whether this agreement makes sense or not depends on how aggressively you act on the first round. The agreement originated from the Journalist school in the 60s, which comprised a lot of aggressive bidders.

    There is a possibility that the lack of a spade lead may indicate whether West has Qs or not. When you find out they have led from diamond length, that isn't that safe a lead, so may indicate they have not only Qs but Kh too. Hard to read that against bots as vs humans, but you can probably partially discount xxxx or xxx (of even xx) in spades with W if they've led dummy suit from length if it were a human leading. One of my favourite problems ever is one where you can't get the answer right until you know what the form of scoring is. This is similar

    • @JazPlaysBridge

      Great point!! Especially in 6NT without a clear advertised source of tricks

  • @kevinrosenberg4368
    @kevinrosenberg4368 25 дней назад

    The great thing about line you outlined though is you get to wait until the 2 card ending to decide what to do you, and you can always still make it (assuming W started with diamond length). You just need to decide with way the KH and QS are to decide whether to drop or finesse (if they are in the same hand, that player will have already been squeezed). Against lots of human beings you might be able to get a read on which way it is. There are definitely other lines to consider: Say on the 5th club LHO pitches a spade. One option now is to assume they don't have 4 spades. Now you can claim via KS, AD pitching a heart, spade to the ace, cash the club. If LHO pitches a heart on the 5th club, you can cash the 6th club. If they pitch another heart you can make by playing RHO for the KH only failing to LHO being 1444 with the KH If LHO pitches a heart, then a spade, I think this is the best order, and I'm having trouble finding anything that makes whenever they are (32)44 either way. There might be a better line I'm missing though. I wouldn't be surprised.

    This is a great general theme. I don't think this example is so clear that it's correct to play the K. Say leader has 10, xxxxx, Kxx, Qxxx. If i play low at T1, I have easy make (I can discard on overtake and low spade return). The suggested line of playing K at T1 and ruffing high at T2 looks like one down. The theme would be clearer if dummy had more like Qxxx of spades.

    • @JazPlaysBridge
      @JazPlaysBridge Месяц назад

      @@kevinrosenberg4368 hi!! Yes! In the event of 5-2 heart break & overtake and low return pitching a diamond would do the trick. But in the event of an overtake & high spade return, you would need a low h ruff to still make - in the end it boils down to how you read the hearts to break (I guess 5-2 is indeed more probable)

    My answer 👇 South is sitting on AQxx H and JTx of diamonds. There is only one combination where S has his bid minus the As. He would need QJs, AQhh, Jd and QJ, so it is most likely S has the As If South has the As and either the Qs or Js (likely because north didn't lead a spade from QJ) and the QJx of clubs, he has a safe exit to preserve his trump trick by playing the Ah, this will be ruffed and set up Kh in dummy, but it will be stranded until the clubs set up.. at which point S will just exit a heart and declarer gets a spade pitch or he cashes As and that will be the defenders last trick 😢 I'm not 100%, I think I'm flying Kc on this trick because south should just play low from QJx as he doesn't gain anything from covering(nothing to promote, intermediate cards in dummy). Final answer Kc

    How easy is it for W to switch to diamonds if you win the first trick with the Th say and play a spade to the king?

    • @JazPlaysBridge
      @JazPlaysBridge 2 месяца назад

      @@veradux5580 heya! As the hands lie, south has 20-21 hcp + north has 5. So in this particular scenario, West with 12hcp knows that partner has at most 3 hcp (4 if you give some leeway). When NS plays a spade through, I think what West would be thinking is that they can choose between switching a diamond and a club. If clubs, then they are hoping for partner to have the Ace and then pierce a diamond through. Unfortunately because North has the Jack of diamonds this isn’t gonna down the contract, so West would have to switch to diamonds. Not sure about other layouts though but it’s also a possible line to consider!

    • @JazPlaysBridge
      @JazPlaysBridge 2 месяца назад

      That said, regardless of West’s actual holding, from West’s POV declarer already has 5 hearts, (2)? spades (to warrant playing the spades, unless they have the jack - then it would be clear declarer has 3 more top tricks and just needs a ninth trick). I think this situation warrants an aggressive switch (to whichever suit they have an honour in, likely to be diamonds)

    if E has 4 card dime, you don't need E to have the A heart since defence can only take 5 tricks if clubs break. So you can still make if A heart is onside

    • @JazPlaysBridge
      @JazPlaysBridge 2 месяца назад

      3 ways to make: 1) QJ club stuff (2/32 cases) 2) If A heart is onside, neither defender can cash 2 clubs. Excluding 2 cases of QJ stiff (accounted for already) there are 6 cases of QJxx either side and 2 cases of QJxxx either side out of 30 left! So 22/30 of the time * 50% ace onside = 11/30 of the remainder 3) if ace is offside, we need a true endplay (AQT3 dime) + east can’t cash 2 clubs (4 cases/30)

    • @JazPlaysBridge

  • @serapuff
    @serapuff 5 месяцев назад

    South can still have 11 hcp and gameforce with the same hand without qD. East shouldn't duck the second H as even if declarer has KQx hearts. If a) declarer has AKJxxx clubs, contract has 9 tricks. If declarer has b) AKJXX clubs and KQX hearts, for him to commit to this line as opposed to establishing D, the diamond has to be honorless and doubleton or weaker. So taking with AH and return TD should be always right (assuming kH doesn't drop).

  • @peterhaw7850
    @peterhaw7850 5 месяцев назад

    This is a good reason why we don't lead the 7. Leading 9 and following Q makes the heart situation pretty clear to partner, and you can't really achieve that through any other combination.
