Highlights from the top flight game played at Stamford Bridge in December 1973. Leeds United would go on to be crowned Champions of the First division and this game is a great example of the midfield line up employed for the majority of the season. With John Giles and Eddie Gray missing for much of the campaign through injury, Paul Madeley and Terry Yorath lined up alongside Billy Bremner and P...

O'Leary did a top job at Leeds.
99% of the time, a new manager comes in to a club because things haven't been going well at that particular club and so most people at the club are prepared to try new approaches and new methods etc... But that wasn't the case with Leeds in the summer of 1974. Leeds had been a successful club for the previous 10 years and were the current League champions. Clough made a huge mistake by trying to impose his own philosophy & completely undo all of Don Revie's work in a very short space of time. It was always doomed to failure. The changes Clough wanted to make could only ever have been done gradually if at all. Being a brilliant manager doesn't mean much if you cannot get the players to buy-in to what it is that you're trying to do.
You can see visibly Alan Clarke is broken
What a ledgand Billy bremner fantastic player and all ledgands
As a Scottish, Leeds fan I only managed to watch Billy play once in a Leeds strip when he scored that cracker against Celtic. I was however privileged to see him play in the dark blue of Scotland many times along with his great Leeds teammates. The Wee Man was an inspiration to anyone who was fortunate to play alongside him. Unlike today's footballers he played for the jersey and I'm sure he would have played for nothing, pulling on the jerseys was his reward. Thanks for the memories Billy, you've always had a special place in my heart 👍👍
A massive influence on that Leeds side!
Was behind that Celtic goal when he scored. The ball disapeared for a few seconds because of the floodlights and then it was in the net. I was a Rangers fan but I always went to Celtics European matches for the night atmospheres and to see the great players of the day from other countries. I pass Elland Road when I visit my daughter in Leeds and it always reminds me of the great Scots players that graced that ground like Billie over the years. I live in Luton and support the team now but Leeds is a great city and I like Daniel Farke so good luck Leeds United this season. 😁
Bremner's workrate was incredible. He was absolutely everywhere on the pitch, constantly helping his teammates. Wee guy, Big heart. (Rangers fan).
.....He did have skill Bremner, he really did , but he was a dirty baxtxxd !🤷
My hero 👍👍👍
Goodness me football was poor in those days. Very bad technique, long ball tactics from Leeds (albeit they improved significantly in subsequent years) poor athleticism. Rushing around but rarely finding their men even with simple passes
Had season ticket back was at this game screaming we are leeds good times goodtimes
He arrived at Derby and Forest when both were at a low ebb - therefore they were willing to buy into what he was offering and that worked. He arrived at Leeds when they were at their highest point (league champions) with star players who (probably rightly) felt that 'if it aint broke, don't fix it'.
The good old days 😂😂😂
Wasn't the worst leeds team
Colin swapped Becchio for morrison enough said
Scotlands finest ever export.
I think there eating there words about Gareth bale now 😂
That was a sad day ,but the Haword train ran out of steam. I didn't miss a game the first two seasons Haword was there and they were the best years for me. Them master signings, Vinnie. Sterland. Strecs, especially stracs, Hendry, then later speed and macallister, my all time hero back then was board ye nets up Lee chapman😂😂😂.🟦⬜️🟨 .Happy days.M.O.T....
Imagine deciding European matches today on a coin toss !!!
beautiful Leeds
Still, we'll win the FA Cup..
Surprised at the teams carrying the Greek flag, I think Greece was governed by a Military Junta. UEFA should not have allowed it as it was surely a political ploy by the Junta.
they still had it
Scored a beauty v Celtic in the EC semi final @ Hampden. Scum's finest player imo 👍
Was a bitter sweet moment for Billy, a big Celtic fan, like much of their Scottish contingent of the time. Legend.
I remember when I was a wee lad ! And David Spenser told me to go ask Mr O Leary if he’d like a coffee ☕️ in his office! He declined! I moved on and cracked on ! My uncle was the Groundsman for many years and I was on my work experience from west Leeds High School! Going back now Nigel Martyn first Million pound Goal keeper and now Manchester United buying Onana for 47 plus how times have changed!!!!
First live game I ever saw. Great memories
Big Dave was the Paul McGrath of Arsenal. Absolute legend…
Narcissist
Pretty obvious by many player's responses that they decided not to play their best under Brian Clough, purely because he pointed out the bleedin obvious and they resented his honesty. Feet draggers and sore losers!
World class
We all love Leeds United 💙💛
Attendance for this game was 17,726 fans.
David O'Leary can't manage unless he's backed by the likes of Bill Gates....
Not just Leeds he betrayed but also us Arsenal fans. He's just about forgiven now as apart from one League Cup, they did nothing else. Yet I can understand why Leeds fans are pissed off with him still to this day. He was well on the way to turning Leeds into title contenders.
He knew it 😁
No one was happy so why did he leave Leeds?
I believe if Leeds won 4-1 or 5-1 Graham stays and Leeds win trophies
I theorise he was still bitter at the manner of his sacking from Arsenal. He might have been slightly vindictive and wanting to prove something. Trouble is Arsenal moved on very quickly and were not just winning trophies but also playing the best football in the league, a stark contrast to the overtly defensive and stale style he'd become comfortable with.
It seems like it was to get one over Arsenal who dumped him very quickly after his success there and apparently Graham to this day is still on bad terms with Arsenal. Its Ironic Arsenal sacked Graham for taking a bribe when its alleged Arsenal bribed the then crooked FA for their place in the league. How else did they get here? They never played any promotion matches to earn their right.
Alan Clarke has the personality of a gnat.
It was a bad fit. I think Clough would have been much more successful at Leeds with Taylor. But I think Clough took what he learned as all great managers do. Look what he did at Forest.
The scary thing is...everything said back in 2009 is still relevant today. No one ever expects to be relegated but Leeds proved it could happen to everybody, the likes of Leicester and Southampton. The only way things will ever change is if a team like Manchester United get relegated....these big clubs have more debt than the smaller ones but the amount they make from marketing and merchandise keeps them going. Financial Fair Play needs to be stricter.
See this was why someone like Wenger was so good. He treated the finances like his own and took an interest. O'leary just blew it
Look at that pitch....Referee looks about 80. I seem to remember Leeds getting all sorts of shit about surrounding the referee when a decision went against them ... so what were Bell and Lee doing?
A great performance by the 'Fifth Beatle,' John Lukic in this one.
Being a Leeds fan all my life thanks to my dad taking me to Leeds forest when I was nine I asked my mum for a Leeds kit for Christmas in the seventies we didn’t have a lot of money so Xmas morning opening up an Umbro box with a Norwich track suit in it yellow and bright green leggings, I was gutted I looked at her and she said “it’s the only one they had sorry “ I looked at dad a forest fan and he just smiled apologetically but I wore for football practice at school discos and out with the lads after school got a Saturday job and brought this kit and still love it , thanks mum and dad love you.
This was the start of a brilliant spell for Walsall. Chris Nicholl got us promotion. 👏👏👏
3:25 - really annoying how O'Leary cuts off Pardew, who is visibly annoyed, hate people who do that.
This was a horrible Leeds team, Roy’s first year at Blackburn was really good unfortunately players let him down in year two
Be nice to know the other side who turned up team sheet. That's the problem with club fans rather than football fans is they are only interested in their club & no one else. Football really doesn't come into it, but that's why football isn't a sport but it's a war with battles every week which sometimes spills out into the street. Goes right back to caveman days ugh ugh then as civilization came & centuries past with constant warring then organised sport came in lieu of said warring which means we stop the killing & play football instead but now & again it goes haywire then much actual blood letting & no football international wise until we won happens then back to football. True.
He made a mistake leaving Leeds. They were a promising top 5 club with exciting young players
And Leeds made a mistake giving the hotseat to the deluded clown David O'Leary, who ended up pushing Ridsdale into heavy spending and won nothing. Leeds should've appointed Kenny Dalglish.
@@baldassodouniversoparalelo6972 O'Leary just got carried away with both signings and subsequently his ego and Ridsdale didn't stop him. Dalglish wouldn't have been the answer though. His Blackburn side got found out the year after they won the league and he was an absolute disaster at Newcastle. Remember how he sold their best players and replace them with his crap son and his past-it mates like Rush and Barnes?
@@tgmartin I know he was at Fulham at the time but I think Keegan should've been chosen as Leeds manager
@@hakc97again nah, he wouldn't have paid any attention to the young players and would have tried to spend even more than O'Leary did.
@@tgmartin who would have your choice been? Strachan is mentioned in this video I know and tbf he did well with Southampton
Bremner later said he'd done his knee ligaments before the match and was in no fit state to play. He was astonished to see Don had picked him and said he had an absolute disaster. When Don said he picked him to gee up the other players, Bremner thought "What a load of bullshit!"
