9 to 5 Millionaire Mindset
Добавлен 4 фев 2012
I talk about money in ways your 9 to 5 job doesn't teach you, but should.
My name is Shao and I became a 9 to 5 millionaire at 29. I also achieved my financial freedom at 35 by working.
I didn't start any business, have side hustles or tried any get-rich-quick schemes.
*Featured in Business Insider (see links below)*
Previously worked at Google, LinkedIn, JP Morgan, Merrill Lynch.
My vision is to enable everyone with the mindset to become financial free, because I believe anyone working 9 to 5 deserves a rich and fulfilling life.
You can expect to hear original content about the mindset, skills and habits to become a 9 to 5 millionaire. No fluff, no shortcuts, no BS.

Laid Off from Google and Why I'm Happy
Around 6 months ago I was laid off from my dream job at Google. I shared my initial feelings and reflections of being laid off in my previous videos and many of you shared how you could relate to your own layoff experiences and found my videos helpful (Thank you!)
As some more time has now passed, I am actually feeling much happier. To be honest I didn’t expect myself to ever be happy after losing my dream job, of all places in big tech with Google. After all, it’s common to build our identities around our jobs and I was extremely proud to be able to tell others that I work for Google. I also had never thought of the possibility of being without Google or not having a full time career to w...

Layoffs Explained: Why CEOs Won't Take a Pay Cut to Save You
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.14 дней назад
When I was finally laid off from my dream job at Google earlier this year, I would meet up with other friends who were laid off and in our chats this question always came up: Why don't the highly paid CEOs take a pay cut? If things were so bad, couldn't they just trim their massive pay packages and save some of our jobs? In my more than 14 years of working, including being a people Manager at G...

In this era, we should view layoffs as part of the employment process. Don’t take it personal because it’s childish and petty.
You are a very well balanced fellow!
I do my best to always look at the bright side! Thanks for watching and for your encouragement!
Good insights.
Much appreciated!
Congratulations on your accomplishments. thank you for sharing your experience kindness and wisdom 🇬🇧🇺🇸
Thank you so much for your kind encouragement. It's a daunting new chapter but I am excited and positive. Thanks for watching too 🇸🇬🇸🇬❤️🇬🇧🇺🇸
I’m sorry this happened to you, brother. Managed to dodge three rounds of layoffs since 2024 right after an acquisition. Morale is in the dumps and the culture is completely toxic. Burn out is rampant among the survivors and spreading like wildfire. Never seen the landscape so bad…
Thank you for your support, and sorry that you are going through a similar situation. It is indeed a tough situation out there. What industry are you in? Do you think things will get better soon?
how is your dream job a job that wasnt even around when u were growing up when did u start dreaming in 2000
I actually graduated in 2010 (so not that early though I may look older 😂) back then google was hiring but mainly engineers so I didnt even get called for any interviews. So I worked for 8 years before finally getting a shot.
@@9to5MillionaireMindset understood the bad thing about computers is theirs a ceiling onve u become an accomplished engineer ant nowhere 2 go but down because you'll never b smarter than the computers creating anything smarter than you is the best way to outsmart yourself besides no disrespect but marketing departments are expendable basically glorified retail position if u put urself around people that look noting like u u will fell gd about ur accomplishment u have 2 help others and the rewards will come bk just my opinion
Thanks for sharing. I also agree it's important to have multiple skills and keep learning newer more valuable skills. In some sense this layoff is forcing me to relearn as well. Thanks for your encouragement and good luck in what you are doing too!
@@9to5MillionaireMindset funny thing is I'm tryna gt 2 where uv been but only part time or on the side I would never leave my manual job teck jobs r 2 unpredictable I stopped studying tec 2 get my class A CDL and real estate license just to always have a backup plan. u could always teach engineering I would pay 2 lern🙋🏿
That's a good strategy actually. To have multiple skills. I am already teaching digital marketing at a local university, but you just gave me an idea to see if it's possible to bring my classes online, so thank you!
I really resonated with your points on practicing gratitude and having a life outside of work. And I'm really feeling your vibe in this vlog too - more confident and passionate than ever. Keep up your great work and continue inspiring others Shao! 😊
Thank you my dear friend for your support! I am proud of your strength and resilience too!
Awesome content as always
Thank you for your support as always too!
faang is overrated, disgusting companies to treat its workers like a number.
how do advise, Regrets of leaving a job… thanks im having anxiety disorder for the last 10 months…
Hang in there! It is indeed a really tough job market out there right now. I wish you only the best and that you find what you are looking for soonest!
@@9to5MillionaireMindset thanks just more a career advice. I have job now for about a year now but I’m not happy, it’s isolating. And i still have regrets leaving my old job although for a valid reason bad boss and politics at work, pay was good. Then went in to depression and anxiety disorder on and off for the last year. Told that i am pychosocial by therapist… I’m rambling… need some encouragement, i don’t know what is happening to me..

You’re not happy
Oh but I really am right now! It was really tough in the beginning, but after being grateful and seeing how everything happens for a reason, I am indeed happier now. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@9to5MillionaireMindset You're so right! Everything happens for a reason! ❤
Thanks for watching too! Indeed I like to also think that I created this video for a reason and you watched it to encourage me for a reason too ❤️
U got paid 250k a year and live paycheck to paycheck. Lol ok
Hey thanks for watching! I actually meant that I was living paycheck to paycheck when I was younger. And I am really grateful that I no longer have to live like that. Thanks for commenting!
great video, thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! And thanks for your support!
It's called saving your money.
Thanks I actually did manage to save most of that and even invest them , so I am grateful for being financially free now.
@@9to5MillionaireMindset That's awesome. I'm glad to hear that. Best wishes for your future job.
Thanks for your support. All the best for your future too! I am hopeful that good things are still coming our way
Thanks Shao! A layoff is kind of pressing that reset button and reorients us to other exciting things that awaiting us to experience.😀
Yes Grace and it also opens us up to new networks and friendships like ours too ☺️
Keep going. TQ
Thank you too for your support across my many videos!
I don't need mental preparness... Don't work for big tech!
Great story. Different people will have differing views about layoff. To some who love their job, they will feel what u feel. But to those who don't, it may be liberating.
Thank you for watching. I am glad you enjoyed it. And what would your feelings be if you had to go through a layoff now? Sad or liberating?
🤕 - it is what it is, reality is harsh
Thank you for your support and for watching! 🫡
Why you're so bad at managing finance? 😅
Haha I hope I am not that bad 😂 perhaps you can check out my first video in this same channel called "I got laid off by Google and now I'm Financially Free". Hope you enjoy it!
I seem to be evidence of the unpromoted hard worker
I feel you, that's one of the toughest positions to be in the workplace. I hope my video helps you a bit and you are able to build your own career soon.
I was not laid off. But I've had a gut feeling that the company I was working for will do it soon. So what I did was I mustered all my resources back then and launched my own startup while still being employed. Now, I can say it has finally paid off (it has been almost a year since I have left).
That's awesome man we need more people like you showing the rest of the world that it's possible (and sometimes even better) to go do your own thing
I'm always fascinated by the whole "How much do you make?" idea. As someone who only makes $50k a year in tech, I can't even begin to fathom what a paycheck would look like with the income you were making!
It's crazy right. At one point I realized what I made in 3 months was what most people make in a year (including myself when I first started working). Then I found out my bosses were making well over 1M, and their bosses were making 2-3M or more. You then realize the sky is the limit if you really work hard and play your cards right, but you can also easily slip into a lifestyle of comparing with others and never being satisfied or knowing what is enough.
Thank you for sharing your experience and giving us this great advice. It really helps.!
I am grateful you found it useful! Please subscribe so you can help my videos find others like you to view it and possibly help them too ☺️ Wishing you alll the best too!
Corporate world is rough. Take care of yourself!
Thank you, I still consider myself lucky to have worked 8 years in a great company like Google. You take care too!
Politicians taking pay cuts? Thats a great fantasy that I wish could be real. Instead they gave themselves a bonus for doing “so well” during the pandemic 🤦♂️
🤦♂️🤦♀️🤦
Congrats finance freedom
Thank you, I hope you find your version of freedom soon too!
CEO doesn't take paycut, well this is only applicable to American companies. Besides Nintendo CEO he mentioned on the paycut, CEO Sea Ltd Forrest Li and its top management froze their salaries. American companies treat their employees as "numbers" but not all are doing that kind of practices. Some, especially Asian companies still have principle that employees are their assets.
That's actually a great example, thanks for sharing! I also understand that once things become more stable, he then paid a decent bonus to everyone who went through the tough times with him.
Lesson number one stop working for big tech !! Fintech is way better and even better lesson grow ur socials in the attention economy. I stopped interviewing for big tech solely because I understood how poorly they manage
I treat people how they treat me and I treat everyone with kindness decency and respect til they give me a reason not too, so if you come at me with disrespect I’ll give it to you in return, idc if my layoff is their fault or not if they come at me in a disrespectful I don’t give sh*t sort of attitude their gonna get it back in return, your not just owed respect cause of your position of having authority over others, it’s earned
in large layoffs like this....your ex-manager often will get let go later...after they did all the nasty work.....its a very Soviet thing to do......
You're more likely to get laid off if you're a minority. It doesn't matter how intelligent you are or valuable. This is the lesson I learned in Texas where discrimination is more common. Whites make up the majority of the corporate management structure. Many companies look for excuses to terminate employees to avoid paying a severance. Asians get the short end of the deal when recession hits. In most professions and companies, it is cutthroat and being Asian you get that disrespect.
Thank you so much for breaking down the lessons learned. This video helped me to understand a layoff from 6 years ago!
I am glad you liked it. I hope you have moved on, found meaning to what you have experienced and are in a better place now!
They can replace you for a person that will take the job for $55,000.00.per year. And show up everyday. And not play on there phone 40% of the day. Ever notice everyone is a VP or manager of this or that? Just saying. Have fun.
You make 250k per year. You should have a lot of money saved, and I don’t feel sorry for you. They only let go the losers.

Some layoffs result in divorces from their spouses.
ALL IT related jobs especially Google and Microsoft will be transferred to INDIA and MEXICO and other Asian countries. Business giants wants to earn more money. Indians are the big players nowadays. they control everything especially the CEO of both companies are INDIANS....How you compete on them? So better work on your own....Dont settle for less otherwise you will end suffering...
Fuck google
is this 250k a year or a month? im really confucius.
Did you forget about COVID-19 EIDL loans?

Also anyone who stops contacting you if you're laid off was never your friend.
Kindness is good but if they're mistreating you beforehand don't bother.😅

I feel like Singapore has a lot going for it but I wouldn't want to be there permanently. It could be nice to go there if you already have a high savings though.

The job market is bad. No question about that. But what can we do. Well, I had to leave the country to find a job. Having 2 degrees, 1 diploma and 6 certificates wasn't enough I guess. I had applied to literally thousands and thousands of jobs. I still have most of the rejection notices in a folder. I don’t know why. Ha ha ha. I had to do something fast. So, I went to China and did a 1 year contract teaching ESL and now I'm in South Korea doing the same. This is my seventh year here. I never in a million years thought I'd be an English teacher after almost 20 years at HP. Sometimes a career change is the best move to make. At least it kept me from being homeless. I want to go back home to the US but It's not the right time.
Wow in case no one has told you this yet, your story is a story of resilience and adaptability. I hope you get to go back to the US some day, and I am sure you will have so many stories to share back home.
We earn less than 25k a year.
