CATANDEYE KOI
Великобритания
Добавлен 14 авг 2006
Hi guys, my name is Steve, I'm married to Cat and we live and work in Peterborough. I am retired from the Ambulance Service, Cat is a Flood and Coastal civil engineering student.
I have two sons and four grandchildren. I have had ponds, now on my 5th since 2004. I still make mistakes but as I also have an engineering background I love to fix and improve things. I am always willing to listen to advice and offer same to anyone. I don't confess to knowing everything but I do strive to learn.
Enjoy my channel and please comment to anything.
Regards
Steve

Two koi with damage, more tearing of hair and an interview!

Its a 24 hour test of patience keeping koi, Goromo and Shusui both have damage which led me to believe I was looking at a bacterial issue as no parasites present in 3 scrapes. Big stuff I have built has been spotted by a morning news TV show in Chicago and they requested an interview. Wish me luck!

A visit down to Hitchin to Perfect Aquatics, for a catch up with Anthony. Had a walk around with owner Pete who declined to be videoed despite access to lighting and make-up....oh well. A new Golf course adventure called Bermuda Falls and a long look at the latest arrivals from Japan, many of which were hand selected by Anthony. Enjoy!

Thanks for the video, very useful on the pondovac 5 which i'm planning on buying as the bottom drain doesn't quite have the pull across the full pond. It looks a quality bit of kit. When you did the underwater video i noticed some type of what looked like a moss type plant growth on the pond walls, unless its blanket weed. We seem to have it which seemed to transfer from a bonsai we had on the pond wall. just out of interest how do you control it ? have you found anything that knocks it back ? cheers anyways,
Amazing. My ponds not quite big enough for me n my spaniel to swim in with the koi but if that was my pond I'd be in there on a regular basis great for mind body n soul
Too right mate!
Thank you for coming, ❤ hopefully we inspired and provided some unique information for your viewers.
Hopefully so Mark.
Its was great having you come visit us. ❤
Yes it was!
Great video Steve I feed mine garden peas as treat love them 👍
Good stuff
Stevie what amazing place thanks for sharing with us 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
It's an amazing sight! If you don't scare them, they become very friendly, don't they?
Very true. Thank you.
A very interesting concept and Mark seems like such a friendly and knowledgeable person when it comes to ponds and pond-less water features. The hands on with the fish was great watch. 👍🏻 Outdoor pond is too deep to stand in but maybe a video this winter from the indoor pond. Will have to wait to see if that happens. Cheers.
Thanks Ken.
What an interesting place. The various water features are quite unique and all are lovely and relaxing. The koi palace is awesome and I love the dogfish. 🤣🤣🤣
It really is!
Just to throw a spanner in the works, how about changing your test kit... see what another set of tests yeald ???
It was great to see you both at the show, and grahams twitching has started to calm down now 😂
Good to hear Andy! Stay safe guys.
Great Video Steve and Cat love your creative things sorry we missed you at the Newark show take care
Thank you, Carol. Stay safe.
How the rich and famous live😂😂The man cave is spot on mate👍👍 I did post earlier, but it had a link in it, so I would think it got removed. Take care you 2, Terry.
Cheers Terry, stay safe mate.
Mum & Dad loved the shout out 😂😂. Steve do u have an email address just looking to ask u some questions about the Koi Trips to Japan .. meant to see you at the GBKS but never got the chance

Sorry for late reply
Brilliant, an international superstar😊👍. Great to catch up with you at the show😊👍
Cheers Phil, same to you both too.
Great to see you in the shirt that matters for your interview pal. MOT 💛💙💛 👍
Cheers Dale, it had to happen.
Superb Hopefully orders will flood in❤👍
In no rush, it's just a hobby but you never know mate.
Who sells a koi with damage? Surely he should have held on to it to heal before letting it leave the premises
It ended up being carp pox not damage in the end. No dramas from me.
Both got damaged in my pond anyway.
Good to see another sparky is a koi hobbiest . From a sparky in America
I know Adam Beyer has some great fish but I would not visit a koi farm in that condition. Dude get a bush hog and cut that crap down!
Hope you get this sorted, but i have to say kat , that was an excellent and understandable lesson into the testing of our pond water, hats off. Cheers 👍
Glad it was helpful! Thanks
Only tropical fish or river shrimp keepers in Japan use such kits. KOI officials even tend to belittle these other ornamental fish worlds and customs. This is because the KOI can grow and refine itself through its own efforts, and we pride ourselves on our observational skills and the artisanal elements that sharpen our senses and reflect them in our fine-tuning.
Just a suggestion Psb bacteria to help with your Ammonia hope things get better
I would suggest that your total chlorine is still too high. I work off the fish tolerating no more than 0.02 ppm that's 20 ppb over the longer term. I have a Big Blue and change the carbon once the output hits 0.03 ppm.
Hi Ken, thanks for that. We've had new carbon in the big blue this year, and we roll it fairly regularly. The fish seem to tolerate 30ppb and I tend to treat when creeping higher. Planning to recheck the Cl in a couple of days to see where we're at. BW
Test your tap water ,people are complaining up and down the country about their source water ,2 yrs ago my pH was about 8.5 ,this season it's 6.8 to 7.0 ,might have been going even lower but I spotted it on my guardian blulab meter and have been buffering it to sit at 7.0 with bicarb ,to think I spent fortune on recyclable ro system ,which is switched off this season because tapwater kh is so low. ph swings the fish absolutely hate it together with the filter bacteria. Your right about high ammonia being slightly less of a worry with a low pH, but I'm pretty sure it works the opposite way with nitrite ,meaning high nitrite at lower pH makes nitrite even more toxic ,to conclude I think once pH has become stable everything else will sort itself out given time ,providing nothing else enters the pond to knock back filter 👍
The pH is still 7 today (kH = 3dh) which will definitely help the filter bacteria. The tap water kH is still 6 so either something is going on in the pond, or it's the ridiculous amount of rain we've had diluting the bicarb. Am definitely aiming for a pH of 7 to balance everything out and very glad that the pond isn't running at 8 as it used to. The colours today are definitely less alarming and the fish are still OK. That's annoying about the RO system - I hope you manage to get things more stable.
I had a ph crash around 5 years ago which baffled me as my tap water is more like liquid concrete, 14dh out of the tap supplied by thames water along with 40ppm of nitrate, I did do quite a bit of research at the time, having high nitrite at a low ph (7) is very toxic but on a plus side it makes ammonia far less, opposite with a PH of 8 that makes ammonia far more toxic and nitrite less so. I prefer keeping my PH around 7.2/7.3 as it helps with any ammonia issues after treatment and 0.2% salt level deals with the nitrite, also keeping a 0.3% salinity would really help with knocks or ulcers over a harsh chemical like chloramine T. PP works very well, it doesn't knock the filters as bad as you might think either, it's a fairly quick treatment thats over with in 3 to 4 hours where chloramine t will be attacking your filter for days, along with a very low KH, plastic media really struggles to stay stable in my experience, I try to keep mine between 3 to 6 dh as below 3dh i notice instability fairly quickly, good luck on getting on top of it all.
Interesting. I've been aiming to keep the pH around 7 to balance the two effects. I'm certainly glad that it isn't running at 8 as it used to. Have just tested the kH of the tap water and it's 6 - so either something going on in the pond, or maybe the rain has had an effect. The water change & bicarb have got it back to 3dh today so fingers crossed (and I'll have to remember that). Thanks
Hi Cat, try testing the kh of your water supply but let it settle over night before testing. You will get a truer reading then. It's been a very strange season so far regarding pond issues. I suspect its to do with the climate.
Good thought, Martyn. I haven't done it for a couple of years & it wasn't until doing the video that it dawned on me that it may be a water supply issue. Have just checked and it's still 6 so I can't blame Anglian Water. Maybe all the rain we've had? Who knows?
Hope you get on top of it soon. I'm battling with ph being lower than it used to be and my source water is down to 7 pH from 8 pH.
If you double the sample size for kh you can measure it in .5 degrees if you times the sample size by 4 you can measure in 1/4th of a degree worth doing with such a low kh but artificially buffering is never really stable I'd set up a trickle in and out
We're back at 3 today which I'm much happier with - but that's a really good thought. Thanks
It would be worthwhile investing in a Bluelab Guadiana pH,cF and temperature monitor
Hi, try changing your test kit. I know sometimes they can go off . Hope you get it sorted. All the best Andy
Thanks for the thought Andy I use a fresh one every year, and this one seems to be doing as expected - but I'll be running out of GH reagent v soon so I think I'll end up doing so. Todays colours are marginally better (phew!)
Its not nice this carp pox mine have got it too, its just not clearing up on mine nice update Steve 🐟🐟🐟🐟
Everyone seems to be suffering so much this year. It's one thing after another. Stick with it.
Hi your videos are a big miss.
Bless you Mark, I'll endeavour to pick up the pace a little. Stay safe
The relative impression is that it is better to activate the KOI itself and allow it to heal itself naturally through autoimmunity, rather than worrying about, disturbing and treating small wounds and injuries. As their activity is increased, the circulation of the pond water, 6:20 even the white, murky pond water, will begin to glow and establish smoothl
Thank you for this.
14:30 We are rarely in the habit of looking at KOI from the side, but it seems that they have steadily developed a firm flesh from the shoulders to the back, rather than the chest and belly that are common there. 14:05 If that is the case, then why not more training and cultivation of the kind of activity and behaviour that Japanese hobbyists are competing for, where they are more frenzied and constantly on the lookout for food?
Thanks again.
Hi mate, apart from your bad back, I hope you 2 are well. It sounds all go at your end at the moment, so I know how you feel, been a bit of a nightmare here too this past few weeks. I love the new workshop/mancave 👍👍👌spot on mate, the only problem I can see is, it looks a long way for Cat to bring you cups of tea, especially when it's raining🤣🤣🤣take care you 2 and stay safe, Terry.
Cheers Terry, yes, I'm going to install a bell so when I press it Cat puts the kettle on, however Cat might not be so into this idea ha ha. Hope you are well too. Stay safe.
Hi Steve, Re the Hi Utsuri - I have the same, eating great growing well but in the winter (unheated) lots of carp pox on it which all but clears up in the summer.
I'm not too worried as its bulking out nicely, the goromo however is still active but looks rough. Stay safe mate.
Hope you get the mystery with the fish behaviour sorted soon. Congratulations on being asked to do an interview with the folks in the US. Once done you'll have to let everyone know what it feels like to be an international celebrity. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Its all a bit of a shock at the moment. I just make big things in my mind Ken. Cheers mate.
That’s a great update Steve, I’d have that shed as my very own micro brewery pal 🍻😋, hope your getting excited for Saturday big kick off 💛💙💛 MOT World famous 👍
Fingers crossed! For a productive season. Just need to see whos staying for the season start.
Hi Steve, Yeah, I've had several fish flashing, it only lasted a day or two, then all back to normal. I've finally after 3 years got on top of the nitrite issues, which was nice !! Phosphates were quite high, hence why the water cress has taken over a third of the pond! They are all feeding as tho they haven't ever been fed, a little bit of chasing the tarts around, but no baby's yet😮 Man cave looking good, I watched the build.. Good luck with the Yanks on Friday!
Good to hear Rick, we will battle on until we get back to normal or at least last year normal.
Great man cave
Thanks mate.
Cracking fella, Hope everyone is well.
All good here thanks Dave. All the best to family.
Nice shout out 👏
Great video. I love a visit to Quality Nishikigoi. Paul makes a grand mug of builders tea.
Tea was an almost instant service. Good Northern manners.
Great video and a lovely fish you purchased.I agree with you the tennis ball with fins does nothing for me.😂😂
Each to their own I guess.
Nice video, mate! I commend you for having the fortitude to only walk away with one fish while in Japan🎉! Koi Trips with Tim and Brian gets an A++ from me!
One fish was the plan but the quality overall was incredible. Cheers.
Great video Steve lovely looking fish hope your both ok
Thank you Carol, hope you are both well.
Tennis ball with fins 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Nice fish and that 🐟🐟👍
Cheers Ade.
A bit of time at Tim's and Paul's place, just ideal time. You must be so chuffed bringing home the fish you sourced in Japan. Special fish. So chuffed for you.
Thanks Lau, the memories just flood back for me. Stay safe
NICE FISH STEVE
Cheers Richard.
@@CATANDEYEKOI hope you and cat all good you will have to pay me another visit and bring cat the gardener lol
Might just have to do that mate, cheers.
