Jerry Hadley and Marilyn Horne performing All I Ask of You from Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Jerry Hadley was the leading American tenor of his generation, and remained to be one of the most sought after singers of our time. Marilyn Horne is perhaps the greatest Mezzo Soprano of the 20th century and has been recognized for decades as one of the greatest musicians from the past 1...

Jerry Hadley: June 16, 1952 - July 18, 2007 Jerry Hadley was a leading American tenor for almost 20 years with a voice that could be rich and dramatic or light and lively. He excelled in roles ranging from Puccini's La bohème and Mozart's Don Giovanni to Broadway. In 1996, Hadley commissioned composer Daniel Steven Crafts to write music for poems by Carl Sandburg. The work "The Song and the Slo...
Magnificent!
He's a great master indeed. 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️
Molt i molt ben cantat. A.C.S.
No screeching, no bellowing, just gorgeous golden notes performed exquisitely. Too many opera singers reach beyond the listeners comfort. This is just gorgeous. Perfectly rendered to its maximum effect.
I always wanted to see Jeremy one day casted as the phantom. Oh well :(
ThePersianTenor Enrico Caruso would have been a better Phantom.
Oh my GOD what singing ! Jerry we love you and miss you terribly! ❤️
I still shed tears every time I hear Jerry Hadley and still ask why, why, why did he have to end his life so young. He had that glorious voice and snuffed it out. So terribly sad and such a waste.
para los que nunca pudimos ser cantantes,....... la vida es verdaderamente aterradora
I just ... I only just rediscovered him. This is too much. Such a lyric, beautiful and powerful voice. I just... it's too sad.
Hadley.
his technique was fantastic until he started listening to coaches and trying to sing with constriction. Hadley from 80 to 92 was a beast and had fantastic technique. He changed. Listen to more recordings before before you speak on technique.
yourmomgoestocollege my original vocal teacher said to me " if some one asks you to sing louder , close your music and leave. Tremendous technique. And he was 100% correct you cannot sing in a constricted way !!!!
Jerry Hadley was and always will be my favorite tenor. His voice had such heart and it's breaks my heart to know that he chose to silence that beautiful instument himself. I can only image the mental pain and suffering he was endured to make that decision. God bless his soul.
fantastic performance, but I couldn't get over the fact that they took it up a third
🤦♂️ He’s a tenor. It fits his voice better.
Meraviglioso Jerry Hadley!!
God bless and keep him - what a gift he had.
I miss you Jerry Hadley. You were the best Tenor ever!!
@fashionablesixties Unfortunately, there was more going on at the time than just a change to his career... my ex-voice teacher dated him while they were in college. She saw him in Paris only a few months prior to his passing -- he took she and her husband to dinner, and of course tickets to the opera he was performing at the time.. He was a wonderful, passionate singer...
He was on the July 1986 edition of opera news. Why did he have to commit suicide ? Could" nt he be happy with the success he did achieve ?
@bellasinalma6565
@GRHCU Hadley was very fine American tenor.. but I don't know if he's better than Lanza.. Lanza has an exquisite quality that even Hadley would be outshone by it.
@favreg17 How can after you listened to his voice and thinking he's not a tenor????
Having see the original Broadway production with the original cast as well as several cast changes, let me say that I have never heard "Johanna" performed with such artistry, real feeeling, and beauty of voice. If only Jerry Hadley could have overcome his problems. His loss was a loss to all real music lovers.
Ariadna M. R.
Indeed , one of the great American tenors of all time.. Better than Lanza, etc..
... just beauuuuutiful... mmm! Karlott
@Tenor1947 Jerry remains my forever friend, and I am touched by the above comments; there were elements of Hamlet in much of Jerry's persona. Incidentally, he told me he was criticized for singing that high C in Boheme, but he did so because it is written that way. Jerry was a consummate artist with a gentle, kindly soul. I recall seeing a lady distraught at having failed to meet Sam Ramey backstage. Jerry introduced himself and asked if he would do instead. Both she & I were touched.
I first heard Jerry's voice when I was a super in the 2nd act of La Boheme in 1982, and I fell in love with that voice immediately. When I got to know him, I discovered that his soul was as beautiful as his voice, and we remained close friends until his untimely death. We will not see or hear his like again, and those of us who knew him well, will miss him forever. L.F.
Singing is very difficult to hide the things inside of yourself. Singing is the work of soul!
@seektheforce 1993
How could you compare the voice of an opera singer with that of a non-singer or a pop singer? Just can't be compared. In my humble opinion, Jerry Hadley gave up too soon. To him it was either the big stage at the Met or nothing. So sad. One can feel his emotion when he sang. Jerry Hadley, RIP.
@moh672 I agree with you that Jerry did bring true emotion into his singing. Saw him perform at the Met and thought he could have continued singing anywhere but the Met. He did not have to kill himself. Yes, a cautionary the Met does chew tenors and spit them out at will. Rest in peace, Jerry. You brought a lot of joy to your fans.
@favreg17 he's not a tenor? are u crazy?
This video deserves more views.
@seektheforce Glenmed used that photos in two of his Papageno arias - one for D F-D and later for another baritone - maybe Walter Berry or Hermann Prey - but this sure looks like Hadley
@seektheforce D F-D wore the same costume in a production of Magic Flute - but that doesn't look like D F-D at all.
@musiq7203 Ugh... IF the voice is placed correctly -- meaning free and resonating in the proper places -- a singer doesn't "have" or "not have" vibrato. It occurs naturally, and the singer lets it happen. An opera singer with a very heavy vibrato or wide vibrato generally has gotten out of the habit of letting the voice float on the air. It can be corrected... and it's timbre, not "tambre".....
@favreg17 He is a tenor, in fact this is transposed UP in order to put it in the meat of Jerry's voice.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written and two wonderful singers.
Incredible voice! Amazing! Just heard his voice for the first time... : ) Karlott
@seektheforce Yes it is, check Google Images using Jerry's name. It's quoted in several newspapers, and there is a closeup image of Jerry in the exact same costume.
What a gleaming conquering voice and aristocratically chiseled phrasing ! The great class, Mr. Hadley ! :)
I have to say that he moved me, although the high C isn´t secure. But when someone makes music like this who really cares right? I'm in love right now.
@DylHsu It's from the CD Sondheim: A Celebration At Carnegie Hall, with Paul Gemignani listed as the musical director. If there was a staff arranger, he was not credited.
who arranged this?
I cried, perhaps also because of all the touching comments
Jerry was wonderful... You should hear his recording of the Bernstein "Make our Garden Grow"... incredible.. . so sad what happened to him..
This is definitely one of my favorite male arias of ALL TIME. What am I? I'm a poet. What do I do? I write. How do I live? I live!
Horne, glorious artist! God bless you ever!
To be honest, in this "Sondheim Celebration" excerpt, Mr. Hadley sings in G and eventually Ab! This is much much different than the movie version, Eb, and the stage version, F, which was originally changed in the early 1980's once Victor Garber completed his run. The difference here is that the higher this goes, the more emotion you can sense in the piece, I believe. So I agree, wholeheartedly that they cannot be compared, but I they key in which they sing is vitally important.
Wow, that's wonderful... I only knew Jerry Hadley as a true "leggiero", and for his Mozart renditions, but that's as good. He's just really polyvalent. Not like Pavarotti who excells in this kind of repertoire, but who butchers Mozart, when he tries to sing it... And such feeling and musicality !!!
Luminous, superb, exquisite, perfect...
