Holfs Sea Fishing
Добавлен 21 май 2015
Holf's Sea Fishing is a video log of some of my fishing trips throughout the seasons and other useful fishing information, tips and tricks.
If you are heading to any of the places I have fished, it should hopefully give you an idea of what you may catch. I will try to add relevant and useful information as I get used to recording.
Please bear in mind I am a beginner/amatuer poster to RUclips.
I do so for my own enjoyment and in the hope of helping fellow anglers.

Holfs Sea Fishing Introduction

Hi there and welcome to Holfs Sea Fishing. In this Introduction video I give a little detail about myself, the types of fishing I do, the species I fish for and much more!
Hahaha, lug worm wife 😆 .. you're right there, bud .. i dont think I'll find many that will get within 10 feet of slimy lug worms.. lol..
Yea, mt gut em n salt em.. jobs a good un.. freeze em.. can store it in the fridge. ok for weeks after... 👌.. gonna try your blanch as well... looks really good... nice 1...
Hi there, yes I have tried salting in the past, but ultimately I just think blanched takes some beating. Do give blanching a try and see what you think. 👍🏻 Tight lines. 🎣🎣
Sorry ,im relatively new to sea fishing do the worms need gutting before the process..great video, great channel..thanks for sharing
Hi there, no problem at all. 😊. Welcome to the fishing fold. 👍🏻. Yes gut the lug first and then follow the process and you'll be good to go with some great bait the next time your on the beach. Tight lines 🎣🎣
@@holfsseafishing How do you gut them?
Hi Holf, Excellent video! I haven’t been sea fishing for many years but I wanted to give it another go but having watched so many RUclips videos of deep hooked flatfish recently I was having second thoughts. This video has come at just the right time for me so I just want to thank you for sharing this idea. Tight lines!
Hi there Mark, thank you, and welcome back to the fishing fold! 😊🎣 I am really pleased people have seen this video as it is such a simple thing to do and so beneficial for both fish and angler. 👍🏻 Please do tell other anglers you meet about this method. All the best and very tight lines for 2025! 🎣🎣
Another great video. 👍. Quick question……….can I blanch yellow tails/blow lug the same way you do the blacks? Thank you. 🐟🐟
Hi there, a really good question and something I really should of addressed somewhat a little in the video, apologies. You can blanch black/yellow tails no problem at all. 👍🏻 The worms you can't blanch are I think what most call blow {I actually call these Sinkys} these are the worms that tend to have quite large very untidy casts with a disc shape in the sand a few inches or so away from the cast. These worms are much more watery and I suspect far to delicate for blanching. Hope that helps. Tight lines. 🎣🎣
@ Thank you. 👍🐟🐟
Well done for the persistence, it paid of for you. Me and my fishing Buddy are having te same experience. One of us is catching most of the fish with similar rigs and bait, fishing right next to each other. Tight lines for the next session.
Hi again, thank you, yes persevering is often key to finding some fish. You'd be amazed how many times I've seen anglers wander off a beach because very little is happening, for things to then start to improve. 👍🏻 And isn't it amazing how that happens when fishing with a buddy. 🙈. Very tight lines! 🎣🎣
Nice to see the blank saver come out for your mate,Holf looking forward to your next adventure. I’ve subbed so I don’t miss it
Hi there, absolutely couldn't agree with you more... 😀. Arguably just a dab but I couldn't really tell you who was more chuffed to see that dab... Me or Steve. 😂 Thank you for subbing... Nice to know people are enjoying the videos. 👍🏻 Who knows what the next adventure may bring. 🙈 Tight lines! 🎣🎣
Hy Holf another good video mate, never fished Pensarn but anywhere is worth ago,I’m off to buy some paperclips today a really good idea never good to deep hook fish,,makin some rigs up later might add some colourful beads to the paper clip for added attraction you never know?🤔anyway keep up the good work tightlines cheers Gary,👍🎣☃️
Hi there Gary, yes those paperclips for me certainly when fishing for flounder/plaice are a no brainier... So simple, so effective and basically cost pennies. 👍🏻 As for adding beads to the paperclip, sounds like a winner to me for sure. Thank you for your comment. 😊 Tight lines 🎣🎣
Lovely video. I'm with you on the rescue dogs, we have 2 Romanian, Both very different characters and as you say , very clever. Mine often accompany me on my videos in the warmer weather 👍
Hi there, many thanks. 👍🏻 That's great to read, there are so many dogs out there just waiting to be rescued. All the very best to you and Tight Lines. 🎣
Pension never was my favourite beach to hit and miss will keep an eye out for you in the future
Hi there, yes agreed, Pensarn can indeed be a bit hit and miss. Just nice to get out and have a go though to be fair. 😊 Ultimately though for somewhere like Pensarn it's all about conditions..... Fish some nice surfy days/nights and it usually helps. 👍🏻 Tight lines. 🎣
A great tip, will try it this year😁Keith (living in Mancot)
Hi there, just down the road from me. Some brilliant fishing to be had on the dee. Yes, do give it a try, you won't be sorry. 👍🏻 Tight lines Keith 🎣
Cheers Holf. Wasnt the easiest of sessions ive done but was good to get onto a new beach thankfully i was saved on that last cast!! Definitely convinced walking away with a blank... 😅
Hi Ste, no worries at all. Honestly and genuinely, that really was a difficult trip out for us. But perseverance and keeping those baits refreshed is key. Well done! 👍🏻 By the way that dab was very tasty.😋 Tight lines. 🎣
Well done guys and thanks for the fab video, and you’re right the Dab is very tasty fish.. enjoy 😋
Hi there, thank you, our pleasure. 👍🏻 And yes, dab is in my opinion anyway a highly under rated fish, very tasty. Just need a couple ideally to make a decent meal and your all set. 🍴🤤 Tight lines 🎣
Just come back from Pensarn (Local Beach) and only one flounder tonight but Friday it was fish after fish even though it was minus 2 at 4pm. Best rig I've found for there is a new one to me, called the running Paternoster.
Hi there, isn't it just amazing how differently a place can fish from one day to the next. 🤔 A decent evening to be out and a fish to save the blank, I'll take that anytime but especially this time of year. 👍🏻 And I'll take a look into that rig. Thank you. Tight lines. 🎣.
@@holfsseafishing Have you ever tried Flounder? It too is very sweet tasting just like Dab. I too am amazed how differently somewhere can fish from day to day but there's a reason for it, many variables to take into account.
Actually no, I've never tried flounder as I was always told it can have a muddy type tinge to it. Not sure how true that is though. 🙈☺️ That being said, many, many years ago my grandad would bring quite a few "fluke" home and give them to many in the community who just loved them. 👍🏻. As for the many variables, yes there can be quite a few. But for a start, most important of them all for a chosen venue in my humble opinion anyway, is conditions, conditions and conditions. 😬 Tight lines 🎣🎣
@@holfsseafishing Muddy is definitely a term I wouldn't use to describe the taste of fresh Fluke. I thoroughly recommend you try and if it's muddy then I'll personally send you a money reward as an apology haha. Night off tonight as it's far too windy left to right along the North Wales coast. Tomorrow it's dying down a little so it'll be wet lines again. Full moon and big tides at the moment, need to take advantage.
😂 You have now tweeted my curiosity... I shall try a fluke before the year is out. 🤔 Good luck if you do get out! 👍🏻 Tight lines! 🎣🎣
I caught my first two flounders (Thames Estuary) on the paper-clip rig today! Perfectly lip-hooked!!!! Thank you!
Hi there, that is absolutely brilliant to read! It is so satisfying to see them lip hooked like that. 👍🏻 Well done for giving it a try, please do share the method with other anglers on the beach if you get the chance. Tight lines. 🎣🎣
Cracking video, thanks for sharing
Your most welcome. 👍🏻 Tight lines. 🎣
Multiple flounders was before commercial fishermen started using them as pot bait, flounders are scare now
Hi there, yes it's a real shame and a waste that they have done exactly that. 😔 Not so much these days though I believe. Numbers in certain areas do seem to of made a little recovery. Fingers crossed they continue to do so. 🤞🏻 Tight lines. 🎣
Great idea, but I tied 3 rigs, 3 hook flappers with paper clips, came to use them, and got in a right tangle trying to get them out of the rig wallet. I did manage to use one rig; it worked brilliantly. Have you any suggestions for storing these rigs? My suggestion is if we make the body of the rig separate from the hook lenths, keep in a separate bag and tie them up at the beach, this seems to work for me, Mind you, doing it at night is a pain, but I am blind as a bat
Hi there, that's great to read that the rig worked so well for you. 😊👍🏻. As for getting them out of the rig wallet, I find a minute or two untangling when setting up of small consequence compared to the hassles of multiple deep hooked catches through my fishing trip. 👍🏻. But certainly something to keep in mind, perhaps a small clip or even just a loop could be tied onto the end of the hook lengths, then simply clip or loop them onto the rig body if it helps. 🤔👍🏻 Thank you for the comment and very tight lines! 🎣🎣
Great video top tip again I have tried alsorts over the years i could get a week out of lug by wrapping them in wind blown sand but I was lucky lived five minutes away from the beach.
Many thanks.☺️ Yes, have done similar with very dry sand in the past and your absolutely correct, it definitely helps keep them fresher that bit longer. 👍🏻. Tight lines. 🎣 Oh yes... 5 mins from the beach... Must be great! 👌🏻
@@holfsseafishing live fifteen miles from the open sea now 🙁🙁🙁
I have never seen you down there 😊 nice to see you are using decent gear
Hi there, I don't fish it a great deal there tbh. Tend to fish in varied places. As for the gear, it does the job. My slosh reels are both easily over 10 years old and the Sonik rods are a few years old also {one of them actually needs a new eye} For me anyway, cheap and cheerful fishing, can be quite rewarding in itself sometimes. Tight lines. 🎣
@holfsseafishing I have a rod well over thirty yrs old conoflex north used it twice then had other things to do .. kids! Used to match fish with the welsh league and north West league I thought you where using ziplex rods .. great video and nice fish top tip there must have a go using it
Well thought out bud 👍👍
Hi there, thank you very much. Thank you for watching and Tight lines. 🎣
Good video, great tips, and I like the paperclip. Going to give it a go, Thanks for sharing, cheers! William
Thanks William and no problem at all. Tight lines. 👍🏻🎣
Good Stuff....Tight Lines!!! 👍
Thank you. 👍🏻 Tight lines 🎣🎣
I copied your tip using paper clip. I had 9 bites with 4 whiting, 4 dogfish, and an eel. All hooked in the corner of the mouth and an easy hook removal, no bleeding. Thank you very much.
Hi there, so pleased you have tried it out and with such great success too! 🎣🎣🎣 Sounds like it worked out absolutely brilliantly! 😁 Well done for giving it a try! 👍🏻 No going back now! Very tight lines! 🎣🎣
Are these blacks or blow lug?
Hi there, these are a mixture of blacks and yellow tails. 👍🏻. Can't really freeze blow lug as they are a bit to delicate so ideally best used fresh. Tight lines. 🎣
Interesting vid, keep up the good work 👍
Many thanks. 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing
You are most welcome. Tight lines. 🎣
Reminds me of floundering at Arnside many years ago. Brilliant idea. Much respect. Happy NY 👍
Hi there, yes it really is a great idea and so easy to do as well. 👍🏻 All the very best to you too! 😊 Tight lines 🎣🎣
I don't blanch mine just salt them in a colunder. Drys them off before you freeze them .they don't freeze solid and can be reused a few trips
Hi there, yes, I have also tried salting them, however I just wasn't happy with the quality of bait I was fishing with. Plus the salting was a bit of a pain and ended up in my tackle box, freezer etc. 🙈😂 The blanched can also be refrozen a couple of times if needs be, but obviously the quality will drop a little each time they are refrozen. 👍🏻 Tight lines 🎣
Great idea and a brilliant vid..👍👍
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. Tight lines. 🎣
I would be tempted to coat them in one of the many attractants available, before freezing. They will take on the liquid as they start to defrost, hopefully adding a bit of smell and attraction.
Hi there, that is an interesting idea. 🤔 To be honest with you I haven't had a lot of experience with the many attractants that have been on the market over the years. And the occasional ones I have tried didn't seem to be make a great deal of difference to be honest with you. Added to that I always seem to of done okay with the lug as it is. Certainly a very interesting idea though and could well be worth a try. 👍🏻 Tight lines 🎣
Brilliant idea.. yes, marinate them lock in some tasty flavour n then freeze.. I'm def gonna try that..
Great tip. Have you tried a salad spinner and or micro fibre cloths to dry worm?
Hi there, thank you. 🤔. No I haven't tried that, but any other ways to help get them nice and dry pre-freeze have got to be worth a little try. 👍🏻 Tight lines. 🎣
Great video. After blanching them do they still slap up for a few days? Or is this just to freeze down? Cheers and tight lines.
Hi there, thank you. No they won't slap up anymore. This is literally the process to freeze down straight after treatment. 👍🏻 Tight lines. 🎣
This video needs to be seen by everyone who ever fishes for Flounders and indeed all flatties, I'll be the first to admit that ive previously deeply hooked them even though ive tied my best not to, paper clips are on the shopping list 👍
I absolutely couldn't agree with you more. 👍🏻. If there is only one video that all sea anglers see that I ever do I hope it is this one. It is so effective and so simple I would argue it is virtually a no brainier to adopt this method. Other than that, the other video I would really recommend is the most recent addition "The best way to preserve your Lug Worm" as this addresses an age old problem of effectively preserving you prized lug worms for a later date/winter. . Thank you for your comment and tight lines. 🎣
Can you refreeze them again if you don't ues them all after fishing
Hi there, I have pinned a similar comment to this. 😊 Apologies as it slipped my mind and I neglected to mention this in the video. But, yes absolutely you can, no problem at all, definitely once no problem. I have refrozen them a couple of times and they have still been okay. 👍🏻 Tight lines 🎣
Of course you can fish do not know the difference we used to salt them and dry them in the sun if there was any and steep them the day before you use them and they worked just fine we used to catch lugs by putting an ice each bag or sack on the mud in the harbour and put stones on it to keep it down and lift it up the next day and pick up the worms. The ones we have in Scotland can and will bite you so wear rubber gloves
Great tip, I've tried salting and wrapping in foil but never blanched.
Hi there, yes I have tried salting in the past but just didn't like the results. 🤔 However, I can assure you if you apply this method you will feel very confident when fishing with it, especially compared to traditionally frozen lug. 👍🏻 Tight lines 🎣
@@holfsseafishing I'll indeed give it a go when planning a trip around high water when I won't be able to acquire fresh.
Enjoyed that are they black or blow lugs
Blacks and Yellow tail by the looks of them mate, Blow Lug are more pink and don't freeze at all.
Glad you enjoyed. Tight lines. 🎣
Absolutely, black and yellow tails this works great. 👍🏻
Great video. Do you think it would work with king rag ? I've had some success with salting and freezing rag, but they shrink to about half the original size.
Many thanks. As regards to king rag I really wouldn't like to say. 🤔. Perhaps worth a try. I've kind of given up with rag preservation and go with the stance it is just one of the few baits that is best fished fresh, alive, wriggling and juicy... Because just like that it's works an absolute treat! 👌🏻 Tight lines. 🎣
Fantastic tutorial, thanks very much for sharing it with us. Def. the best method I've seen. Wonder if this would work with rag worms? I've experimented quiet a lot with preserving rag worms and had some degree of success. Tight lines.
Your most welcome, it really is so much better than traditional frozen lug. 👍🏻 I to have also tried preserving rag, brining then freezing seems to work to a certain extent. However, the results simply just aren't good enough, especially when fished with. So for the time being at least, it's fresh rag or no rag at all! Tight lines 🎣
@@holfsseafishing Totally agree with you on the rag, tried salt solution and alcohol. I did catch fish with them, but after they completely defrosted, eventually it turns in to mush. Also found that the catch rate with rag is highest when the rag is almost dead, must produce a different scent.
Brilliant, 👏 top man for showing us that. Going to allow me to go fishing when I feel like it and not have to worry about bait before hand. 🍻Cheers
No problem at all. Also, do keep in mind I have refrozen packets of this bait atleast a couple of times if I have had bait left at the end of a fishing trip, and it has still been okay. Tight lines 🎣
@@holfsseafishing Double bonus 😁 🎣 🐟 🐠
Absolutely. 😊👍🏻
Try adding some beads on the paper clip wires will turn em into mini plaice bars bet fish love em
That could be worth a try. 🤔
Brilliant stuff. Great little channel. Hope to see lots more content coming up. A lure angler at heart I have just started a bit of bait fishing. Whiting and my first dab also. Flounder my next challenge. Fish the Blackwater Estuary in Essex. Love all your tips👍👍. Keep em coming. 🐟🐟
Thank you. Also have a go at the lures during the warmer months. 👍🏻🎣. However, during the winter months it can seem a long wait for spring so getting the bait rods out certainly helps to scratch that itch. 😊 Tight lines 🎣
Hi great video again m8 and fantastic idea with the paperclip were you nr saltney or the otherside thanks m8
Hi there, thank you. Yes it is great idea and very effective indeed. 👍🏻 A bit further down river near to Connahs Quay. Tight Lines 🎣
This has got to be one of the most useful fishing videos I've ever watched. I've shared with fishing friends and will use this myself. Terrific idea.
Hi there, that's great, really glad you enjoyed the video and got some useful information from it too. 👍🏻 Thank you for sharing it also, it is a great and simple little method that everybody should know about. 😊 Tight lines. 🎣
Well done with your anti swallow super we here in portsmouth used to catch flounders everywhere sadly now a Flounder is a rarity great video
Thank you. 👍🏻 That is a shame, really enjoy a some flounder fishing now and then. 😊
Superb video with nice fat flounders. I fish for sport and hate it when they take the hook down and can't do much to prevent harm. This is a great method to stop deep hooking fish. Nice one
Hi there, thank you, yes it really is such an effective little method and so easy to use. Deep hooking flat fish for me and I hope many others.... Is a thing of the past! 👍🏻 Tight lines. 🎣
You should give fiddler's ferry tavern a bash if you ever get chance I've had a few good days in the past flounder wise
Thank you for that, I shall take a little look at Google maps. 👍🏻 Tight lines 🎣
You would make a great match angler in the course world holf! Thinking angler, great channel mate keep up the great work tight lines 👍
Hey Karl, thanks for that, although I think perhaps not a match angler... Too intense for a chilled out fishing sloth like me! 🙈😂 Tight lines buddy 🎣🎣
Thank you. Subscribed.
You are most welcome. 👍🏻
I've just returned to sea fishing after a break of 50 years. We used to use flounder spoons, but I'm told that they're 'old hat'. I'll give your paper-clip rig a try!! Great video. Thank you!
Hi there, I've never used flounder spoons, but I believe they are very effective at attracting feeding flounders especially in nice clear water. 👍🏻 A 50 year break! 👀 That is some break indeed! Wecome back to the fishing fold! 😊🎣🎣👍🏻
@@holfsseafishing Thank you! I live about 100 feet from the north bank of the Thames Estuary. The beach caster that I use was made by me from a blank 50 years ago. I still use the Penn 100 reel (and an Abu 7000) from then as well. I love the simplicity of your fishing - it matches mine to a t! Some luck with flounders, school bass and a late evening session which saw 27 whiting landed. I'm 71 - my wife thinks I've lost the plot. 🤣
Hi again, that is absolutely brilliant to read! 😁 Sounds as if your are doing very well, on as you say a nice simple set up. 👌🏻 As for your wife... Very understandable. 😂😂👍🏻. My wife considers herself a fishing widow at certain times of the year! 🤣🙈. Very best to you and many tight lines! 🎣
