I was doing the same thing and convinced a group of 3 guys that I was a friendly for a good 10 minutes. Even up until the point where they all got in a jeep and told me to get in. Turns out the game wont let you get in a vehicle with enemies 😅. They must have been newer. For those who dont know in Reforger a dead giveaway someone isnt a friendly is when they get closer to you and their username does not appear over their head.
