A residency at the University of Birmingham in 2018 changed my life as an artist as I made transformational changes to my practice seeking to find equivalents between the language of drawing and the interactions of elemental particles. A series of exhibitions resulted, “The sketchbook and the Collider” at the University and “The Particle Event” at Mac Birmingham “Collision Event” an ACE funded solo exhibition at the Library of Birmingham in 2019.In 2020 I completed another residency at Stryx Gallery testing new approaches.
Previous work, following my mother’s dementia diagnosis, explored how neuronal connections are created in the brain and developed into larger networks and how these connections can slip and fracture.
The idea of the “network” and the interrelationship of elements underpin my thinking: neuronal networks in the brain, the constant interactions and transformations of the elemental particles or the spin networks of loop quantum gravity.

On a recent tour of Andalusia, I visited the caves at Nerja and began making drawings as an equivalent to my physicist who has detection experiments taking place in mines and caves as the thickness of rock filters the cosmic rays enabling other particles to be more easily detected. I was excited by the contrast between the subatomic particles darting close to the speed of light rendering time i...

The footage was created by panning across large drawings made for the previous exhibition at The Beacon Museum, Cumbria, UK earlier in 2022. This opened connections between the two exhibitions across time and space just as the particles can become "entangled" at the quantum le...

Absolutely amazing.
You’re very kind
These are mesmerizingly beautiful.
Ian, it is always an absolute pleasure to see and hear you talk about your work.
Cheers matey. How you doing?
@@ianandrews7972 I’m good thanks, I will message you!
I love this artist, he's serious, and he uses paper from the Moulins d'Arche. the class
Hopefully you will get the funding to take this around the country. I'd certainly love to see it.
Amazing art and talk as always Ian (genius)
incredible project
Remarkable!
Brilliant talk at UWE today. Wish you every success in getting people to engage with particle physics through your beautiful drawings and films.
And you so much for your kind comments and for coming along... All the way from Cheltenham if I remember rightly!
Was great to have you take part in this residency Ian. :-)
