Hi! My name is Karin. I am fascinated by the beauty and behavior of gorillas and other primates. I realized the importance of conserving the species by visiting the zoos in Japan. I support zoos, which do their very best to create species-appropriate environments for them. I mainly film primates in the Tokyo area, but occasionally in other regions of Far East Asia. As an aside, I did my internship at the Kenya Wildlife Service during my college years. I learned that improving the livelihoods of local communities is crucial to wildlife conservation. Great apes are protectors of forests. They matter to all of us. My channel is nonprofit. Profits after deducting costs are donated to zoos, organizations, and research institutions that enhance the conservation of endangered species and ensure animal welfare. I'm neither an expert nor a member of any zoos, but I do my best to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge.

The zoo planted different kinds of plants and trees in the enclosures of the gorillas on October 23 when the zoo was closed. On the following day, it was their first time to see the new environment. I visited the zoo with much excitement. When the zoo opened, both Monta and Rola were already outside. Monta was vigilant on the moat, while Rola was taking a nap as if nothing has been changed at all. However, as the time went by, I noticed that Monta behaved differently. He spent more time in front of visitors, as if he was avoiding to facing the change. That part of footage will be shared later. Thank you, Robin, for caring about Monta and Rola. I am not zoo staff, but as a visitor and a fan of primates, I do hope JAZA will seek a solution to end their solitary living environment. Many visitors keep asking the same question, which you've been asking on my channel, to the zoo. The zoo hasn't provided a convincing answer for the current status.

Yes I am glad they got some new enrichment but still how sad is it that a perfectly fine silverback is alone. No bachelor group no wives no children. They are social animals and these two have been alone for way too long. And from my understanding once they did try to introduce Rola and Monta why can they not live together? What is the issue?
Very true. Monta shouldn't be kept alone. This is the reality of how JAZA handles this critically endangered species. The biggest issue is the lack of experts and skilled manpower. JAZA is the sole responsibility for the current status of captive western lowland gorillas in Japan. Thank you, Karen.

How old are Monta and Rola, Karin? Monta’s eyes say it all… what the heck are these things? Where the heck did they come from? Rola loves that bush she’s eating. It’s gonna be bare in no time flat😃🥰! Hope they give both gorillas more enrichment activities. 🦍🥰

I am just watching this two years later. I have a couple of questions. Since Rola seems to like smaller companions, I wondered about the small Muntjac deer such as those living with D'jeeco's family. Would that work: Thoughts? As for a companion for Monta, would Komomo work? Perhaps Riki down the line as he gets older? Just wondered what you thought of these ideas. Thank you!
Thank you, Vickie, for your thoughtful comment. I think the idea of placing small animals, such as a Muntjac deer, in their enclosures would be wonderful. It's only the zoo to decide whether they can handle multi-spieces exhibits. As for Monta, I would really hope to see Monta living with his own kind. Komomo or Momoka can live with Monta until they find appropriate mates to breed. But I doubt this zoo is capable to accommodate more gorillas.
As always, thank you for the video. I love Monta and Rola. However, I still have little respect for this zoo. For years they have kept these beautiful gorillas in a barren cement box. Now they spend a few yen to install some plants. To see handsome Monta so confused by seeing a few plants breaks my heart. Monta and Rola deserve a better life.

Have they or can they do DNA testing to see if he is related to Momoko ?
Two years ago, I had a chance to ask the vice director of the zoo in regard to the DNA testing to see if Monta was related to Momoko. The zoo hadn't done it, and it seemed they were not going to test it. I assume the reason behind the zoo not testing is related to how Monta and Momoko were imported to Japan. Beautiful Monta looked bewildered, he noticed the changes but didn't know what to do with it. Gorillas don't like change. My heart ♥️ hurts for those beautiful lives that are no longer with their families or in this world. God gave us these beautiful such amazing animals so we could enjoy. Now, He said they have to come Home. Praises goes out to the Zoo and the zookeepers. 😢😢❤❤🦋🦋
