The Legend of Kingdom Come: kck.st/4dhoJbM
When Kingdom Come came out in the late 90's I was blown away by Alex Ross' take on Superman. And it was awesome to see how his version of the character- taking it back to the style of the Joe Shuster original- began to be the standard for artists working on the monthly books. I'm a big fan of his Batman as well- but we never quite saw some of the elements of his Dark Knight catch on in quite the sam...

Both Calkins and Raymond in Flash Gordon owed a lot to Art Deco. Raymond was actually working in what was the King Features House Style. So was Calkins working in a Chicago style. This was driven home to me when I finally looked at John Terry's Scorchy Smith after rereadding for the umpteenth time Harold Gray's comments about what he learned about comics from Sidney Smith. It sank in how much like Buck Rogers and Calkins aviation strip crossroads Scorchy looked. One by-product of this in both Calkins's and Russell Keaton's art was the linear and more decorative approach to cityscapes than Raymond's more classically influenced concentration of volume. One person who admitted he was influenced by Buck Rogers was Jack Kirby and a look at his cityscapes from Asgard and Atlantis to his designs for the aborted movie of Zelazny's Lord of Light will show many intriguing parallels. I like Yager and Tuska (who also worked on Scorchy Smith) too but by then the styles had changed. Murphy Anderson also ghosted Prince Valiant at one point. Just thoughtf I'd put my two cents in because you didn't mention the Kirby connection. This was a good vedeo.

In Sweden he's called "Den Vandrande Vålnaden" which means something like "The wandering wraith" it just sounds cooler than ghost who walks. Its alliterative He's also dark blue due to a lack of purple ink at the time. Which makes him look more intimidating and is better camouflage. I think it actually ended up making him better. Also the legacy thing is great with all the historical settings. I think he needs some competently made movies. They could add some realism and sensitivity towards the african setting and how they portray the tribesmen. Id like a movie set during historical periods. I remember reading one where he was protecting huguenots from persecution in france and another one where he mets Rene Descartes in Sweden. There's just so many possibilities with the character.

Adams' version is definitely a big step in Batman's visual evolution- and I'm being a little hyperbolic with my title. But Rogers' run really solidified the character and Gotham. Adams' batman output was a lot spottier than I'd thought before looking into it- my take is that rogers and englehart took a lot of what they'd seen about batman in the late 60s and early 70s, how it gad started to move away from camp, and formalized that into the approach to the character that was the blueprint until Miller came along.
