Is this the whole story? Somehow I doubt it. I am however quite sure that on the basis of the figures this farmer gives, a reduced rate of inheritance tax on agricultural land is likely to be the solution. If it was levied at half the normal rates the tax would, according to this guy, be affordable.

500 acres is more than treble the size of an average farm. This would be worth (with buildings) around £5-6million. So a bill of £400- £600,000.. Less than 10% of the total. HMRC IHT statistics for 2023 showed just 40 Farms worth over £5 million. Out of over 2,000 Farmer legacies . Why can't the mini barons pass their land on to their kuds at say 75?

Fact is, Labour say they have been left a twenty billion pounds 'black hole' by the Tories. I am sceptical. What I think is the truth is that Labour want to spend at least twenty billions more than would be available under normal circumstances, nothing to do with any inherited budgetary deficit. They have their usual addiction to throwing money around and need to raise an amount in excess of what the economy can provide to satisfy their expenditure programme. Having been working class all my life, I would normally support Labour in many of their policies but I have witnessed over my lifetime the gradual decline in farming in this country. Farmers work hard yet are made to feel guilty for it. To be honest, it is deeply concerning that we continue to invite the excess overspill of the third world's population explosion to decamp to the British Isles. Our ability to feed ourselves has declined yet more mouths have been created to consume what couldn't even satisfy preexisting demand: we've been importing food for many years, now. During World War Two, the British were told to 'dig for victory', that is, grow their own food to help provide what farming couldn't and prevent the country being starved into submission by the Nazis. Every day, more farmland is disappearing under new housing developments, perhaps this is why Labour wish to bankrupt farmers or force them to sell up to circling, vulture-like developers who need more prime locations to build over. An influx of immigrants have to be housed, of course. I have sadly come to the conclusion that Labour aren't very good at managing our country and prefer dogma to pragmatism. I support the farmers in their protests: we need to preserve our precious arable and pasture lands for our own security. Labour think that in this modern world we can simply buy in supplies of food from abroad, but as we are seeing in the middle east and the Ukraine and with potential tensions with China, we cannot afford such complacent thinking. Sorry to bang on about immigration but it isn't helping us at all and will exacerbate the growing problems of ever reducing food production in this country.
