Listen here: leaf-music.lnk.to/cg2024 Light & Dark is an impassioned and energetic performance of historic music that speaks to modern listeners. Cellist Catherine Little and pianist Gregory Myra’s interpretation of Mendelssohn’s joyful D Major and Shostakovich’s angsty D minor cello sonatas is a storytelling of the wonder and adversities of life. The album is a follow-up to the duo’s 2021 rele...

Wow, that Kodály piece sounds so cool and powerful with those downtuned double stops! And the Bach piece has such a moody vibe, perfect for that. I personally would be scared to approach Scordatura as it would throw off my fingerboard geography and muscle memory, and my intonation is not good enough for that kind of funny business yet 😅But you made it sound awesome. Thanks for sharing!
Hi @jonathanwingmusic, I feel the same about this music! 😀 The cool thing is you don't need to learn a new geography, since the adjustment is made on the part of the written notes and not the performer, if that makes sense... I think this might be a challenge for someone who has perfect pitch, since you end up hearing different pitches from the ones written in the music (at least on the re-tuned strings). Cheers!
@@catherine_little_music oh yes that makes perfect sense - I have dabbled years ago on Clarinet (not saying I'm any good lol) - but transposing instruments such as that and some brass and saxophones make it a lot easier for players to switch "tuning" ranges with different instruments while using the same fingering where the notes are transposed for them - so it sounds something a bit like that (e.g., you play a "G" but it's really an F *wink wink*). The unusual time I would say good thing I don't have perfect pitch lol - allows me to adapt as needed without going crazy! I'll have to give it a try when my skills are ready for it :)
@ yeah, good analogy 😎 👍
Looks like a beautiful trip Catherine. And stunning soundtrack of course! 🙂🌷
Thanks Lyndsay! I still have fun looking back 😊

Le chant des galaxies qui tourbillonnent autour de l'univers. 432?
Thank you 💪
Not sure if this helped. I've been playing cello 36 years, had 4 years of cello at the university, played in string ensembles, symphony orchestras, practice every day. There are no more cello teachers in our area, no orchestras, no outlets. They all disappeared, died or got canceled by the university. My instrument is getting more and more scratchy and screechy, it's so annoying. Sometimes I feel like just quitting the cello and concentrating on the piano. I have a very cheap $300 instrument and strings are old. Why buy a new one when there is no place to play publicly? Maybe it's my old age.
Sheesh! I’m sorry to hear! Would it be possible for you to try a better cello for a few days? I bet that would be a real pick-me-up! Don’t forget to play the cello for yourself- I think if you had a good instrument to play you would be inspired.
Great technique!
Thank you! I’ve enjoyed discovering your playing too!

Une pépite ! Merci ❤
Merci!
👏👏👏Thanks for playing the music!! Can we ask where in the world this is recorded?
Our group started with a big fan of yours who passed the scores around to the rest of us. We’ve been getting together to read your arrangements/compositions, and now we’re all 4 of us fans 😊 Every Christmas I send smart phone-captured performances to my newsletter subscribers and this was one of them. We recorded in my living room in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Thanks for writing to us- it’s fun to hear from you! We hope you come to perform in Nova Scotia one day! Ps- we just tried some tunes from ‘Last Leaf’ this week ❤ so great!
Especially loving your Grieg and Elgar. Wondering if you are familiar with this gem? ruclips.net/video/N9JIiTA9Vt0/видео.htmlsi=bAnfsP-cU60XIi9K

now play it alone with your hands and feet 😅
Ofcourse these are well trained professionals. It does not have that spark though which is needed to make it special. Sometimes out of tune which is unforgivable to be honest...
Какой красивый альт. Спасибо за исполнение 💐

Absolutely beautiful.
I love this music too :)
I wish I had learned Cello as a girl.
I feel the best time to learn something is now :D Being a kid does have advantages to learning an instrument, a big one being the luxury of so much more free time, but adults definitely do learn to play! I hope if you still have a wish to play, you'll make it come true.
ps- In case you're interested, I created this mini-course for people dreaming of taking up the cello. It's free, and you can find it here: catherinelittle.com/5-tools. Best wishes!
