Self-Sufficient Farming: Harvesting Our Own Beef
Просмотров 926 месяцев назад
This isn’t what we normally post about. We specialize in worm farming, but we grew up on a cattle farm. We are lucky enough to be able to butcher our own beef every year. One thing we have always struggled with is vacuum sealing. Each year we lose meat due to freezer burn, but this year we finally found a solution. @Avidarmor has commercial vacuum sealers that work excellent for what we do. We ...

    When do you know there is too many worms in one bucket and how do you separate them

    • @hollisfarmllc
      @hollisfarmllc 2 месяца назад

      The worms will not “overpopulate”. They will have a good population that they fell they can maintain. A lot of times, I will still get several worms in my own finished casting that I use, and I will just add them to the garden as well knowing that the worms in the bucket/bin will reproduce to make up for the ones I took out.

    Thanks so much buddy! This was incredibly helpful. Have a three bucket system going right now and got some anaerobic issues as we battle days of 90% humidity and flood conditions here in Minnesota. Validating to see this same set up and know that it is strictly the humidity, not an issue with the system. Drilled a few more holes in the bottom and will be bringing um inside. This is hands down the best video showing this process.

  • @wilsons4health953
    @wilsons4health953 4 месяца назад

    I think you did a great job of explaining the system. We have created several of these but just recently we had one system that the worms were crawling up the side of the second bucket and the whole system started to smell. Can you tell me what could have gone wrong?

    • @hollisfarmllc
      @hollisfarmllc 4 месяца назад

      My guess would be one of two things. First you could have added to much green material such as kitchen scraps. If you add more than they can eat in just a few days then it can start to rot and smell. The other thing could be that you added to much water and made it to where there wasn’t enough oxygen making it into their bedding.

    I made one, and it seems to be working, but the worms are staying in the middle bucket instead of migrating up. Also, fruit flies! How do you prevent them?

    • @hollisfarmllc
      @hollisfarmllc 5 месяцев назад

      If the top bucket has a good compost to food mix they they will eventually move up once they are completely done with the middle bucket. Fruit flies are probably the biggest reason people stop having a worm bin. There are a few tricks to keep the population low. You want to keep the pH higher. So try to avoid acidic foods and coffee grounds. Also, keep the bin a little more dry. Cardboard is a good way to help this. Then only feed your worms enough to last a day or two. You want to also grind it up as much as possible so they can eat it quicker.

    Does humidity factor in to the temperature we are to maintain? Example, in Ontario Canada we can have 80 degrees but with humidity feels like 90+F... Is the system affected by humidity I guess I am asking.

    • @hollisfarmllc
      @hollisfarmllc 5 месяцев назад

      Humidity really has more to do with the moisture level. You want to have your bin wet but not so wet that the bedding pours out water when you squeeze it in your hand.

    What are the best worms, night crawlers?

    • @hollisfarmllc
      @hollisfarmllc 7 месяцев назад

      Red wigglers and night crawlers are your two most used ones I’d say. They are both very good for composting though. The big difference is that red wigglers are more of a top worm where as night crawlers will usually go deeper into the soil. So a lot of people will actually use them in the same bin so that the red wigglers are on top and the night crawlers can continue to work the soil in the bottom on the bin. We only have red wigglers at the moment.

    Do you need to empty the third or bottom bucket from time to time??

    • @hollisfarmllc
      @hollisfarmllc 7 месяцев назад

      On occasion. It’s good to check anytime you change one of the other buckets. But usually if you don’t add too much water, it’s usually fine most of the time.

  • @patriciakane764
    @patriciakane764 7 месяцев назад

    If you use leaves instead of home grown compost do you add the same amount of water and do you need to mix in some soil or compost if you only have bagged compost. (I am a new worm bin composter!)

    • @hollisfarmllc
      @hollisfarmllc 7 месяцев назад

      You can just do leaves if you want, really you just need to make sure they stay wet. Leaves will sometimes dry up quick, but once the worms start breaking them down then it’s easier to keep them wet. Be careful with bagged compost, check the ingredients on the bag to make sure it is all natural and has not added fertilizers. These could potentially kill your worms or heat up your bin. Good luck!

    How do you not smash your worms with 3rd bucket?

    • @hollisfarmllc
      @hollisfarmllc 7 месяцев назад

      In a three-tier worm bucket system the third bucket doesn't smash the worms because the holes that are drilled in the bottom are spaced out to allow for proper airflow and drainage without causing harm to the worms. Additionally, the worms have the ability to move away from areas of pressure, ensuring their safety as they navigate through the layers of the system.
