A Jake Thackery song. These numerals for counting sheep - yan, tan, tethera, methera, pip - are believed to be ancient Brythonic words preserved in Cumbria. Some of the Welsh and Cornish numerals would seem to bear this out. Welsh numerals are un,dau, tri, pedwar, pump.

Great performance of Jake Thackray's song on Countryfile last night. It was such a shame that the programme didn't give him credit for writing.

How many times have you heard on TV a song writer bring given credit? When was the last time you saw or heard on telly " that was Kenny Rodgers singing a beautiful song written by Roger Bowling and Billy Edd Wheeler" because I know you haven't.

Heard this on Countryfile also ...my father (1900-2006) had a counting system something similar..Een , feen , fether , feen, fence. etc..he heard it from a man who was born in Argentinia in the later 1800s, who , in turn heard from sheep herds in that country.
