The many Ragstone Bell towers on the UK's Essex Coast have an origin and history that reveals they weren't constructed for bell ringing alone, they had several other purposes when they were first built and used a stone that had travelled a remarkable distance for that time.

Thankyou David for giving an excellent demonstration of the Ellacombe Chimes today at Goldhanger in 2023. I have come accross such a mechanism in other Churches on my grand tour, but was nit aware of its purpose. From now I will have a greater appreciation of thier design.
Absolutely love the way the village is presented today, home's have been sympathetically renovated, & the music works really well with the images. Great Video for future generations.
Ive had the pleasure of being ship wrecked Off the Island, dad had left the center board Keel down, we had lunch & then the clinkboards started creaking, dad looks startled, he tried to raise the keel, which was set in the table, then bang crack & the Blackwater started coming in, tide was going out!. Spent the night on top of the bunker, the rats kept nibbling at the biscuits, in the darkness dad manned the small brass bilge pump, I often wonder who fixed out boat, was a Dauntless boat. Love to be able to visit this old Island

Stayed there frequently in the 80s.
It's sad to see the state of the place in the final photo. I spent the first ten years of my life a very short distance along the seawall from the Mill Beach hotel, in the bungalows that stand out over the tide. We had my mum's wake in the Mill Beach hotel just over ten years ago, but I haven't been back to England since then.
My family were the publicans there for many years, Jean and Ron Myers. My mum in the kitchen, my dad singing onstage on a Saturday night. Fond memories.

Thanks very much for that, I have driven past it lots of times on the way to Mersea Island. I Live in the New Forest now but find myself watching videos of that area. I must re visit it sometime. So much History. Surely someone could make a blockbuster film about what went on there.
