    I just have a question. What brand violin “fiddle” do most bluegrass players use?

    • @ericw751
      @ericw751 4 года назад

      Billy, Unfortunately there are no good answers to this. As there are bluegrass players, there are that many fiddles. Many start with pretty cheap instruments as kids. As they get better and as their ears and fingers improve over say 5-10 years, they get better instruments that match or even challenge their skills- frequently built by luthiers in their region or what they can afford or what they find at music festivals. Most non-professional BG players do NOT play high end brand name instruments and this is for several reasons. (1) They don't have the money, (2) there is a price point beyond which the choice of an instrument is up to the individual. These great players can make great music from plywood! (3) they don't get a discount on the price of the instrument. Best answer I can give you is the more you play, the more you know what you'd like to play and understand how much of what limits you is you vs the instrument!

    I got two of Kyle's Banjos he made and his brother made them also. His brother used to sell music instruments at the Galax fiddlers conventions. You get around in those areas they pop up for sale. One of those banjos is fretless and it has a white Formica fingerboard and peghead overlay. The Formica is the same stuff that's put on kitchen counter tops. Kyle always put the headstock star on at a angle as far as I know. A lot of Kyles brothers are passed off as his brothers these days. But his brother made good sounding banjos also. These old time guys played on homemade and inexpensive instruments.

    What about the Clifford Glenn and Frank Proffit style banjos?

    • @chestnutcreek3444
      @chestnutcreek3444 6 лет назад

      It sounds like it's time for another exploration of luthiers expanding further out into the Virginia and North Carolina mountains! Clifford and his father Glenn were important banjo and dulcimer makers, and the mountain style fretless banjos made by Frank Proffit and others since have definitely been influential, especially in the western North Carolina region.

    Is Kirk playing one of those new Round Peak Lowgap banjos that Kevin Fore's making?

    • @chestnutcreek3444
      @chestnutcreek3444 7 лет назад

      I think it is one of Kevin's banjos. He started making them about 10 years ago, and then took a break for a while and just started back again. Kirk's banjo would be from that earlier period.

    Interesting, thanks! I guess the discussion on "dulcimers" is confusing to me as usually people are talking about a type of zither including "lap" or "appalachian" dulcimer? There is so much of it that when you refer to the original instrument by the name (the common hammered dulcimer) you have to add a description.
