Thong Teron, a legendary hero and a great warrior from the Karbi tribe was the main person behind building this monolith. He was from the Karbi Kingdom (now falls under the state of Assam in the Karbi Anglong district). Thong Teron also called Thong nokbe, was invited by the Jayantia king to support them in the war and to defend the kingdom's territory. Despite that, the primary objective of their invitation to Thong Noke was to killed him. The Karbi and the people of Jayatia has some cultural similarities till now. According to Oral History, Nartiang was a market place made by Thong Nokbe but no perfect evidence has been found regarding this.
