There are places, actual places where all these incidents took place and the locals of each place will still tell you about the incident that took place on their soil. How can a writer go to each place and ingrain the incidents written in a story in the culture of that place. Actual temples do exist which are mentioned in the Mahabharata. Just because you know it as a book doesn't mean it did not happen. You can physically verify the places on ground if you do some research.

Shesh Nag is the aasana of Maha Vishnu on which Vishnu lays and gets into meditation. So before Rama ends his incarnation, Lakshmana has to end his incarnation. This what happens.
