This English rota (a type of vocal round) is from the mid 13th century, and was composed by an unknown Englishman (possibly W. de Wycombe). The title approximately translates to 'summer has arrived'. Interestingly, it is the oldest known musical composition featuring six-part polyphony, and is possibly the oldest surviving example of independent melodic counterpoint. Very nicely done, Exeter U Madrigals! I remembered bits of this song from singing it with the Simpson College Madrigal Singers in the early 1970's (Iowa, USA). So nice to hear it again!
Nice evening music.
Wasn't expecting to see Simon Clark in this video - though considering the content of his vlogs maybe I should have.
Beautiful, but too short. I'll have to put it on repeat!
Bagpuss. That is all.
this should be a meme
The way it ought to be sung. Straight out of the 16th Century. Love the last notes.
Best version of this song I've heard. Well done!
same, my friend
Wonderful performance - bravo! The best I have heard of Sumer is icumen in which is one of my favorite songs in musical history. Thank you for sharing!
Wow! That was amazing!
One of the groups in my chamber choir’s madrigal dinner performed the song this year. I remember very vividly that it was a group of three with two girls and one boy, and I took the two girls outside to practice, because we weren’t doing much in choir that day, and I didn’t know who is in that group. Come to find out, it was my friend Lena. There was another girl that I didn’t know very well by the name of Brooke in that group. Anyway, as I was saying, I took Lena and Brooke outside to practice the song for their group, because we weren’t doing much in choir class that day, and it sounded really pretty. You guys would have loved it. By the way, you guys sounded really good doing that song.
I deeply regret I hadn't heard Exeter University Madrigals till this year 2018. Absolutely, divine. Merry Christmas.
