See transformation - Bugsworth Basin Middle Arm sorted by the Whaley Bridge CRT Team

This is a quick short before we publish the next video in the basin itself. We are currently waiting on CRT archives to grant permission for us to use some images from their archive. They are pretty busy but will hopefully be soon! From this video you can see the maintenance team has been hard at work on site (now Canal and Rivers Trust are officially custodians of the National Monument). Great...
Nice video but not all the work was done by volunteers. In the 1980's during a time of high unemployment the government ran schemes in the area which offered the local unemployed part time work. One of those schemes was run at Buggy basin where I myself worked for a year,we were given our dole money plus a tenner for three days work a week, there were two shifts Mon-Wed and Wed-Fri. I seem to remember the official name was something along the line of The Community Task Force and one of the many jobs we did was to build the horse bridge shown in the video. It was a sub zero day in winter when the large steel girders were delivered, due to the weight restriction on the track down to basin the delivery lorry had to drop the steel work by the Navi which we then chained and dragged behind the old yellow dumper truck. I think the scheme ran for around five years, great memories.
This should have a million views for the presentation and historical importance. Thank you for the education and fascinating video
That's so kind. Really pleased you enjoyed it! It's for people like yourself who care about history, we make this stuff!
Really interesting and informative, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for taking the time to write 👍
Fascinating, thanks so much. Maybe one day someone will make a model of the basin. When I see old photos of Bugsworth, I have an unlikely hope - that some painting or photo will emerge showing the original Midland Railway viaduct, which was damaged in the 1867 landslip, but remained in place, unused, for nearly 20 years, having been replaced by a timber trestle which also lasted for the same period, until the new embankment was finally built, straightening out something of a dogleg. Only one photo is known to exist of the viaduct (during construction). Only one engraving shows the wooden trestle bridge (with the old masonry viaduct alongside). If ever any other photograph, drawing or painting should emerge, with one of these in the background, I'd love to see it. Not even David Easton knows of such a thing. I have written up the story of the landslip, as well as the double runaway train crashes in the following year, which you are welcome to have a copy.
@@soonguy @soonguy I know exactly what you mean! I look forward to the day I see some of the pics in this video in high definition. I keep looking on the ground and on google maps for a trace of that viaduct you speak of. I'm not precisely sure where it was! You are welcome to send the story over I'd love to read it. superbly presented and full of rich history
Thank you so much for your kind words! Appreciated 😀
I love your attention to detail. And the graphics bring the elements and history to life. Great stuff👍👍👍
I accidentally stumbled across the channel, and not only is the restoration of the basin 1st class , you wouldn't ever known it was in such a dilapidated state. I am from Wales so I don't know the area, But it's beautiful. The way you have tied the photography of the old and new shots is also remarkable. Just subbed 👍👍👍🏴🇬🇧🇬🇧
Terrific history, well done, takes me back to my work at BW in that area including part relining of the arm from the Peak Forest to the basin, fishing a 70 tonne crane out of the canal at the site of Tesco's bridge, first stage repairs to Foulridge river and its feeders including underground trek from the res to the junction in the feeders, happy days.
My Dad was born at Bugsworth, and was on board Sue Day's horse drawn boat for the second reopening ceremony, I was steering.
We spent 3 happy weeks there last year thanks to the failure of Lift bridge 24. My gratitude to all those who worked so hard to restore it
I see I'm not the first to be amazed by the quality of your videos awesome work 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I have great admiration for all the men women and even children who as volunteers over the last few decades have lovingly restored our waterways. I think we all owe them a great debt of gratitude for what they all achieved. I just wish the government could see how important our lovely canal system is to the majority of the people.
Great video I'm really enjoying 👍
Very very relaxing to watch ..thank you. ❤❤ all the best 👍
Glad you enjoyed it! 👌
It so beautiful i love canal
👀
What an absolutely brilliantly researched and presented video. Thank you very much for taking the time to edit and present this look at our local history. I remember playing around the lift in the 80's when it was abandoned, looking back now we used to play underneath the viaduct, which is where the weights used to hang. If we had realised then how much weight was in those counterbalance weights we may have thought twice about playing underneath them. 😳
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this upload, thanks for making it. Living in the area the lift was our playground in the 70's and during school holidays we would try and get as many rides up and down as possible off any boater that would let us onboard. thanks again, Regards Steve
Excellent; thank you very much.
Excellent work
Very informative and well put together. It is sadly obvious from your commentary that rebuilding some of the kilns to original working condition would be prohibitively expensive.
I am sure from childhood memories, that in the early 90s a mobile crane use to setup here and bungee jumping used to take place over the canal. Does anybody else remember this?
A wonderful historical record of Bugsworth for all to see for many years to come, thank you !
Thanks, very interesting history. I've worked in Furness Vale since 1998 and when in the office regularly run along the canal from there to Whaley or Bugsworth basins. Fascinating stuff and looking forwards to more info. Keep up the good work!
very enjoyable, so much was lost in the 60s and 70s, now all we have is a concrete world with no personality.
They are getting a bit better at building sympathetically in Manchester nowadays tho (with what's left 😉).
Well done great use of the AI in enhancing the photographs.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Appreciated! Very much enjoyed telling this story.
Really enjoy seeing so many folks enjoying the hobby. Here in the States, the heavy handed rules and cost to even get any required code repairs to any boilers has almost totally shut down the steam hobby. There's a few places that will still do that work, but at what cost? Any new make boilers can easily get into 6 figures, and even then there's a 3-5 years wait. A neighbor was quoted close to $79000. just to do a firebox and lower front tube plate! I know that it's a lot of work, but what are they getting paid per hour? If your in that business, one would expect that they have the tools and required skills to accomplish this work in a reasonable amount of hours!
Great video! Loved seeing all the steam power. Thanks from Canada.
This is without a doubt, one of the best, most informative and fascinating films, detailong our beautiful cities indiustrial legacy i have ever seen. Please, PLEASE share more of exactly this. 11/ 10 💖🙏💖
