My father, Private William Beningfield of the first Middlesex, was one of the last survivors. He passed away in 2001 at the age of 100. The US submarine was the USS Grouper, not the Perch. After the torpedoing, the ship foundered - the hatches were tied down and the POW were not allowed to escape while some 800 japanese soldiers were disembarked. When the pows finally managed to escape they were fired upon by the remaining Japanese guards. My dad was rescued by a fisherman in a small boat, who gave dad a piece of taro to eat, some water, and took him to the island.
