International Mokuhanga Conference
Добавлен 30 сен 2021
Since 2011, the International Mokuhanga Conference (IMC) has been held every three years (Kyoto, Tokyo, Honolulu/Holualoa, Nara) at venues where the possibilities of traditional Japanese woodblock techniques can be explored among artists and adapted to new modes of representation.
Echizen - 5th IMC - Wayne Crothers presentation " The works of Ralph Kiggell"
Wayne Crothers speaks about the work and legacy of artist and scholar Ralph Kiggell at the Fifth International Mokuhanga Conference, Echizen.
Ralph Kiggell (d. 2022), acting chair of the 2021 Nara conference, was honored for his innovative use of woodcut in a memorial exhibition at the Imadate Art Museum. Wayne Crothers, Senior Curator of Asian Art at the National Gallery of Victoria, presented a moving talk about Ralph and his legacy, and Jacqueline Gribbin wrote a personal tribute presented to conference members gathered in front of his work. This was so interesting. Thank you. Did anyone catch the name of the narrative style? Transcript has it a couple ways, but Google returns nothing. kishan gatsu?
Absolutely brilliant video. Inspirational. Thank you.
I have been very interested in gomazuri, especially after seeing the works of Ido Masao (and Saito of course). Ido seemed to truly have it down to a science! I would love to reverse engineer his technique… and up until this video I wasn’t sure where to start. Luckily, there is a lot of information in your video to at least give me a head start. Thank you for this presentation and for sharing your insights and learnings! One other variable I’m curious about is how different sizings (paper prepared with glue) play a role in the gomazuri effect. Were the papers you tested on pre-sized by the paper manufacturers? I’m inspired to try some similar experiments soon. Thank you again!
Wow! Such a scientist! Spectacular! Brilliant!
These talks are so valuable. Thank you for putting in the time and effort to share your collective knowledge.
Thank you for your amazing concise presentation, and sharing your creative process. If only all tutors were as generous.
Thank you so much!
I am happy that Laura Boswell and Tomasz Kawełczyk are Talking about mokuhanga...Arigatou 🙏🌻🌻😍
love the music:)
Nydelig!
Thank you for making available the recording. I somehow missed this live.
Too long content😄😄😄
Jacqueline I found this You Tube very informative and a fascinating connection to the environs. Take care x
Thank you Denise! Sorry, I didn't see your comment! Take care, too. xxx

I love the involvement with the Australian plants and land, seeing mokuhanga in a different context.
Thanks April! Yes, it was an invaluable experience to go out with Dennis.
Great talk about the roots of her work in mokuhanga. So lucid.
Such a genuine look at gomazuri, sesame seed texture, in all its mystery, thank you!
Such interesting revelations about the evolution of color in mokuhanga! fascinating
Great demonstration of a free contemporary approach to a traditional technique!
Henry Smith covers a huge amount of territory relating to the evolution of mokuhanga as it evolved after the Tokugawa and into Meiji era
great historical commentary on an important ukiyo-e artist's work in black and white
great demonstration of printing with a baren
Such an inspiring demo!
Inspiring video. Love the free approach and the sense of movement. Thank you!

It is wonderful the way brush making reflects the history of Japan, with new types introduced at the time of the "black ships."
Wow, Loved this presentation. And what a beautiful result! Thank you!
Thank you for recording this! I missed the live version and am so glad to catch up with it here.
I have heard sumi ink has shellac in it? Do you find the rabbit gum does the same thing? Is Rabbit gum also known as rabbit skin glue?
Thank you for the incredible effort to bring this conference to the world via the internet and streaming technologies. I am so grateful to be able to view this content even though I'm halfway across the world. Thank you all.
Pretty amazing even without the translation. I saw a similar translation of a suite of Rebecca Salter's ink drawings into woodblock prints at the 1st IMC in Kyoto/Awaji.
This was so inspiring! The resulting prints are terrific. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and workshop design.
thank you
Well, I find a way to translate it from Japanese into English by changing it in the settings :-)
Hi! Is there no English translation?
The final print looks fantastic! Thanks for sharing your process, Benjamin. In Photoshop, you can extend the canvas size in black color instead of the default white, which saves you from the steps of creating the guides and filling the borders with paint bucket.
Shoichi is such a master carver! I could watch him all day!
Very very nice
Thanks a lot
