Добавлен 30 ноя 2018
An adventurous couple from Australia who bought a sailboat on the other side of the world. With no clue on how to sail, we left our desk jobs, sold everything we had and bet everything on a sailboat called Zephyr. With your support, every week we will share our adventures, hilarious moments and amazing sights from the places we visit. Along the way, we hope to inspire awareness in marine conservation through the wonderful people we meet and engage in a more sustainable way of living.

Modifying a BENETEAU OCEANIS 43 Salon | We NEED more Space | Sailing Zephyr - Ep.265
Space to move around freely on a sailboat is a never ending battle. The smaller the boat, the less space you have and the more cramped it feels. We are constantly battling to optimise the little space we have to make our lives easier on our Beneteau Oceanis 43.
This weeks episode sees us trying to increase some salon space by using our creative side to change things up a little.

We get right back into the teak work on our Beneteau sailboat. Last week we did the long hours of sanding all the teak toe rails till they were nice and smooth. Then we went through the process of using wood filler to fill in all the gaps in the teak. This week we are straight back at it with sanding and applying teak oil to complete our restoration of our Beneteau sailboat teak toe rails. Hope...

Happy holidays!
This makes me so happy for you guys!!! lol
Moving the freezer was a nice modification. My one concern is the length of the wire and the gauge of the wire for the bilge pump. On my fridge, I needed to upgrade the 12-gauge wire to 10-gauge because I was getting too much voltage drop in the line, I would suggest, running the freezer on its highest setting and then reading the voltage on its display and comparing that to the voltage at the battery. Ideally, you want the drop to be less than 3% so if your battery is at 13.2v, it should be at least 12.8v on the freezer display.
Great advice, thanks for that! We'll definitely look into it.
You can use the hole in the floor and put a flush wall mount connector.the cover the hole with wood and looks factory.
That is a great idea!!!!
We found this cool product at Home Depot called "bucket head" Its a Dry / wet vacuum that only cost us $55 CAD. It is just the head unit that mounts to a 5 gal. Home Depot bucket. Unfortunatly it is bucket specific. It doesn't seem to fit Rona / Lowes buckets. It was the cheapest way to get a wet / dry shop vac that is fairly small.
That is awesome! Thanks for the tip!
I’m thinking you might want to bungee your freezer to the table legs when you’re traveling to keep it from sliding around
Good call, thanks for the tip!

Covid? What's that?? 😃
you cant leave it on that outboard mount at sea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy to see that you went with the yamaha
You are stronger than you look. Yamaha is the best
Buy a lock 🔒 for that engine
Yamaha make good Outboards, and an important point with them is reliable Worldwide access to Servicing parts when you need them. The one thing I would consider doing, to help extend their service lives, is once the engine and gearbox are properly finished with the Breaking in - shift to using good Synthetic engine and Gearbox oils, which are so good if you use them prior to break in, they may never be able to break in properly. There used to be Warnings with good synthetics to only use them after break in is complete, and I haven’t even seen it mentioned for a while - and the Same goes for inboard Diesel engines and Gearboxes as well. In the USA Mobil One was really Cheap in WalMart, but horrifically expensive here in Britain, but here, at least as good Golden Film Synthetics, were brilliant value. James, make sure that engine is securely locked down at all times. May it serve you and Natalie Really well during its very long Service Life. Best Wishes. Bob.👍🌟🌟🌟❤️⛵️
No surprise that it was a 4-stroke because you bought it in the US. 😉 You defiantly want to use the davits to lift it because they do not swim. I am curious about your motor mounts. When you replaced them, it did not seem like you did an alignment. Have you done one and if so, what improvements did you see in the sound and vibration.
Check your manual to see if Yamaha recommends ethanol free fuel. It's a little more expensive, but the carburetor will love you for it...
Unless you are a sailor, you can never really understand the excitement of a new outboard for the dinghy. Congrats on the new motor. Can't wait to the adventures you have now that you have a fast and reliable motor.
James you have purchased a great brand of outboard. However, and this is no criticism, but I find from what I have seen on just about all channels, most people go and buy things without asking viewers advice. Did you know that you could have bought a 9.9 hp 4 stroke Yammy which has tons more torque than the old 9 hp 2 stroke and that would have been sufficient? You proved that because you have only run your 15hp at half throttle and look how it performed? A 9.9 4 stroke would have given that same performance. I know because I swapped a like for like 2 stroke for a 4 stroke. I couldn't believe the difference. Further you could have purchased a 9.9 4 stroke Yammy and just replaced its carby with a 15hp model and ended up with a 15 hp model and saved heaps. That is what Yammy did for years. Just put on a bigger carby, which increased the hp and charged way more for it. I'm not rubbing salt into the wounds but a 9.9 weighs far less as you know and is more easily handled. But here's the good news. You can upgrade yours to a 20 hp model. Exactly the same engine just with a bigger carby. You and Nats could water ski with that! LOL.
Yes but... Being that the new engine comes with a 5 Year Warranty, I would not be making modifications and voiding the warranty 😮
@@TTM-GEB Yes but remember that is what Yamaha did for years and charged a lot more for it. They were simply ripping people off so they can hardly deny a warranty for something they did for years. I know the warranty would say the motor cannot be modified or the warranty would be voided BUT Yamaha was doing that themselves so the "Pot cannot call the kettle black." Look up the meaning."The pot calling the kettle black" is a proverbial idiom that may be of Spanish origin, of which English versions began to appear in the first half of the 17th century. It means a situation in which somebody accuses someone else of a fault which the accuser shares, and therefore is an example of psychological projection,[1] or hypocrisy.[2] Use of the expression to discredit or deflect a claim of wrongdoing by attacking the originator of the claim for their own similar behaviour (rather than acknowledging the guilt of both).
Well heck, now we cannot hear you coming!
It's more interesting to see where you're looking rather than the reverse, and leaving that 100lbs hanging on that rubber boat transom while it's on the davits is not as good an idea as rigging pulleys to bring that thing aboard.
I have an absolute dislike for "product specific connectors" that conform to an industry standard by other manufacturers.
Good choice going with Yamaha--You may want to pick up a pad lock to use when it is stowed onboard--those holes on the ends of the clamp screw handles are for locking them together when facing each other. If they can't unscrew them , they can't steal it !! Just a thought .
And get that old shirt from the last motor to hide the shiny new-ness of it.
We saw you at the vet day @tractor supply! We are on the Elan with the pirate flag behind you 🏴☠️
The teak looks great! Awesome job, James!
Your teak oil is not a stain it's an oil. There's no color in good teak oil. Sorry for the bad news . Keep up the great work
@@rickskalberg421 I have found Two types of Teak Oil, the normal standard type Teak Oil, is a bit dark and surprisingly when I was in the USA using a Sailboat in 2016 the best value for that was in Walmart, and I bought every can the local Branch had.,however, West Marine had a very expensive Golden Teak Oil- which looked like engine Oil, and tbh, I was tempted to try it, but never got around to buying a bottle of it, but thought it could really look the business, if used after the standard Teak Oil had started drying Out, but the wood still pretty well fed internally, so at most only needing say two coats of the expensive golden Oil, so a bottle of it may last a good number of years ? Unfortunately the boat was a total loss before the teak got to that point, so the chance to compare them was lost, and there won’t be any timber on Deck at all, with my next Sailboat, it will be all foot and knee friendly non slip, plus 316 Stainless Steel Grab Rails. I’m done with wood to be honest. Best Wishes. Bob.👍🌟🌟🌟⛵️

I think that teak oil does not "stain" the teak but rather brings out the natural teak color like a varnish on wood.
You raise a good point and something I was thinking about. I need to do some deeper research on this. But I feel like it added a slight tint. But overall I think you are right and it just enhances the natural teak look.
It is amazing how the teak is that dry the oil just soaks in it. Looks great you did a good job kudos
We are pretty happy. It acts like sponge. I'm interested to see how it lasts.
Congratulations on your new motor! Looks like a beast
James I do understand your wish to make your Teak look like new. However, in my opinion after spending 30 years trying to keep my Teak looking great, I just decided to let it age and scrub it with salt water every now and again. Continually sanding those toe rails will just end up as thin as tooth picks. So far as Teak oil is concerned, it is just snake oil. ,Teak is naturally oily that is why it doesn't rot so it will not absorb your "Teak Oil". Waste of money and effort. DON'T EVER stain Teak... YUK. Teak is beautiful naturally and too oily to truely take stain in any event.
If you like the natural grey of teak I'm sure it is beautiful to you.
Following on from what English.awyer said James - Teak Oil is actually Wood Food, and there are benefits from Feeding the Wood. The grain gets sealed and the protective Teak Oils appear to get usefully boosted, and Protection from Rotting continues ? To me, putting a filler onto the Teak doesn’t help, and best instead would be to cut filler pieces out of Teak off its, and slot them into the Teak instead with small securing teak dowels ? Then once you have all Teak again and the Teak takes in all the Teak Oil Coats it can absorb, when it needs more coats should be easy to spot, and at worse, only a very light sanding should be needed, if needed at all, as the surface should look faded and “hungry” in need of a few coats of Teak Oil Again. Nice work with the cloth James, my favourite was the microfibre cloths - Just don’t put them in a Tumble Dryer.😅 Best Wishes. Bob.👍🌟🌟🌟⛵️
@@cestmoi1262When Teak is Grey, it is starving and desperate for Wood Food, which Teak Oil supplies it. The Teak has dried out, all the Oils are gone, and that is when it starts Rotting. Yes Teak Does Rot, Varnish is the Protective Layer sealing in the Oils, but Varnish becomes a Nightmare to Maintain, plus all the preparation work required for reVarnishing, Steadily reduces the amount of Teak from what you Started with.To Maximise the Life of the Teak, if I had to Start over again, I would never Varnish it, and only make sure to feed the wood regularly with Teak Oil or, today, choose to have no exteriorTimber On a Boat at all,and thanks to the Very Real Termite Problem, be bloody Careful with what woods and plywood are used Below Deck and find out the best Termite Protection Layer to Barrier Coat them with - Possibly an epoxy Twin Pot Paint ? I know Island Packet use Termite Proof “Starboard” ? I think it is called. 🤔 I could seriously use some input on Termite Proof Coatings to be honest.I know that for Timber Frame, and other houses, there is a green coloured plastic Sheeting, that goes with the Construction Pad, with an anti Termite insecticide in it, to prevent the he little sod’s getting in at all. Biggest emitter of CO2 in the World by Far ?Termites, Believe or not. 🤔
@@brownnoise357 Thanks for the info Bob. I love the way you explained that. It also makes the job seem less like a job and more of something we need to feed and look after. Thanks again for watching and as always for providing some much needed knowledge that we needed. Cheers my friend.
@@cestmoi1262 Did you know that Teak is NOT naturally grey? You didn't read what I said. Go back and read what I said. "Scrub it with salt water every now and again." For your info, that removes the greyness and the Teak looks great. My point was when you are on a budget sailing around the world, you don't need to keep sanding the wood. Every time you do that you remove more and more wood and you are unnecessarily paying for products that look great for a short period of time. This is not a super yacht and not worth the time and cost. It is like scrubbing a Teak deck with salt water. It looks great and you don't oil or stain that do you?
About 20 yrs ago there was a guy Melbourne FL, put on scuba and removed boat anchors and replaced with cinder blocks, went downstate to sell them, he got busted though.
Danish Teak Sealer - I gave up on varnish years ago and have been using this and love it!!! Prevents bacteria growth, mold, and mildew!!! Get it from TotalBoat. TotalBoat Danish Teak Sealer saturates wood grain deeply. Simply brush or wipe onto clean, dry teak or other woods after cleaning, let it sink in, wipe away the excess, and let it dry. Maintaining the finish is simple: Just clean the surface and apply another coat as the wood weathers. Repels water and doesn’t make surfaces slippery when wet.
No experience sailing An older boat How do I afford insurance ?
I hope you are using Semco sealer for your teak. It is the only one I have found to last.
PS. The other advantage with Teak Oil, that comes with feeding the wood is no Sanding, retained grain texture that is maybe enhanced a bit which seems to improve grip as well ?Well worth trying imho, though from now on, no wood at all on Deck, and feet and knee friendly brilliant white non slip instead to reflect the most damaging Sunlight I can. Bob. 🤔🌟🌟🌟👍⛵️🏴🇬🇧
James! What a legend doing all that cleaning! Must feel good, and Nat will love it when she is back! We miss you Nat! We hope you are loving your time with the family.
McDonald Coffee is good! lol, love you cats.
I have used a 2 part epoxy, really clear araldite from Bunnings. Sand down a piece of spare teak to get the dust and mix it in with the epoxy to make a teak paste. I have had some in a couple of really deep cracks for 4 years and it is still good.
BY FAR THE EASIEST WAY TO TREAT TEAK IS TO USE SNAPPY NU TEAK 2 PART CLEANER AND THEN USE SEMKO TEAK SEALER. APPLY 2 COATS OF THE SEALER ONCE A YEAR AND IT WILL LOOK NEW FOREVER. SUPER EASY TO DO. NO SANDING.
I have been using oxalic for 50 years, easy, cheap, always looks good....odysseus
@@billcollins1360how do you treat the teak with oxalic just asking as I have rails and rubbing strips to clean and treat on my rival 32
@@kevinbright1 1 large table spoon of oxalic to 1 litre of warm water paint on with brush leave 10 mins wash off, linda
@@billcollins1360 I've never used that, but the Snappy Nu stuff just brushes on and off and leaves the teak literally looking brand new. I was shocked the first time I did it on my 10 year old teak.
Rejuvenated teak looks the best if you can afford to get someone else to do the dirty work.
Hi James. I must admit, after getting disabled, I gave up on Varnishing woodwork on deck, and after removing it, switched to feeding the wood with Teak Oil instead - a decent reasonable cost Teak Oil, I found in Walmart, West Marine had a lovely golden Teak Oil, but heck that was expensive. Possibly other known good Wood feeding Oils like boiled Linseed Oil will work as well ? All the Best . Bob in Wales. 🤔🌟🌟🌟👍⛵️
Thanks for a good video. Am I alone in being a bit concerned that the tank, which weighs over 1/2 a tonne when full, isn't fixed in place? No problem when boat is upright, or heeled 30 degrees, probably ok at 60 degrees. At 90 degrees?
You guys are special, that is why people give back.
