Cairns to Hinchinbrook 2024
After sailing WSW for 10 days from Vanuatu, we made it to Cairns. It turned out that we were there JUST in time for a rare family gathering. We can't plan these things, so I felt so lucky! Steve did useful things on the boat while I played with Mum, my sister and some friends. We overlapped to eat too much which was excellent fun.
We expected that we'd have to do some tacking to get south and sadly, we were right. But at least we were mentally prepared for bashing into the waves. And even for the deterioration in coral health since our last visit. As you'll see, it's still absolutely beautiful.

I do include footage from Efate as well, but this episode covers our adventures as we set off from Epi to Malekula, the Maskelynes and onwards to Ambrym. We met some lovely people who were assisting with various projects through The Butterfly Trust. Through them we got to meet people from all over Uliveo Island as we zig zagged from village to village testing water salinity. I would have liked ...

It was a mission to get here, but Fulaga was the main drawcard for us returning to Fiji. Our friends have given it rave reviews and loved their time here, and now we feel the same. Our host family Salote, Mini and Chica were so thoughtful and fun. I got to go crabbing, and we were spoiled with fresh fruit and vegetables, freshly baked bread and lemon tea. AND music! G'day Robin, what an excellent voyage! Thank you for all the trouble you take to shoot and edit your videos. As others have said, your approach to sensible cruising, serene observation and respectful visitation is a very welcome change from the others. Your clickbait-free channel is warmly appreciated! All the best with the southward leg of your voyage!
@@TonyKeyes woweee that means a lot! Thanks so much! I actually enjoy editing so the pleasure is mine/ours.

Well done you two. Appreciation for being allowed to come along for the ride. I have loved your humour, values and attitudes (awful word, but) towards the local folk and their homes and customs (including Aotearoa!), and your filming of the seascapes both above and below the waves. Hopefully you will enjoy your slide down the Eastern seaboard towards home. Hopefully too, you will do a better job than Capt J Cook, and avoid the shallows.
@@-hopskinny5865 oh, THANK YOU! Again, what beautiful feedback!! :) And yes, we have a few more handy tools than Cook, and are less likely to use muskets against locals. :/
Would love to know what kayak brand you recommend. We are on the look out to add one or two to our boat.

Thanks again Robin for your video and the usual quirky commentary! 😂 Nice to know you have some Kiwis with you to elevate the cultural context 😊 I've seen those long beans from time to time at our local supermarket - I'll have to give them a go on your recommendation. Thanks again.
@@-hopskinny5865 I’m glad you liked it! Yeah, these kiwis were fun to hang out with and they tolerated occasionally being filmed. I hope you find the same kind of beans. So good with garlic and pasta!

Kia ora korua. Thanks for the lovely video - respectful to the locals and their home as always with you two. When you get the opportunity, check out the film 'Tanna' - it is a beautiful love story set on the island. No doubt it will mean much more to you now.

Must be swallows in autumn migration to summer places?
@@Silvius.2 we suspect that they made their nests in the sail bay while we were in Marlborough Sounds, as we saw them flitting about. By the time we knew there were nests in our sail we were at sea! (We never used full mainsail in NZ.!)
How far out u was when birds meet u? They on saisonal travel then?
Seaweed go seen many kiwis and many working to solving thats seas getting they balance back. Kiwis know what must be fixed and under water its always not seen from humans firstly! Hope kiwis solving they predator problems and human made collapse of nature ballance. Seas same important like forests, birds and land... Interesting as usual, I tried to get into Parengarenga, 9th February in my Nova 28 'Connie', but there was an Easterly 1.6m swell running, got half way and turned round, too much white water, old charts and no local knowledge. Good to know there is plenty water for next time. Thanks for sharing.😊
Wise decision! I wouldn’t say that there is plenty of water. Shallow and shifting. We got lucky!

Wait....did you go into Paerengarenga harbour? Well done. What do you draw and were you ever concerned about depth. Gets pretty skinny at low tide. Lovely videos. Thanks!
We draw 1.8m. There were a bunch of shallow entries up top. We lucked out with calm weather and moved on rising tide close to springs high. We had good tips about the shifting sand bars.We didn’t count on getting into any of these potentially dodgy places and had a Plan B. Glad you liked it!
