YouTube vs. TikTok in 2025: Why I Made the Switch as an Artist
I’m choosing to invest in posting my art, tutorials and drawing thoughts to RUclips this year. And that’s even with a small subscriber count- less than 500. While TikTok video views boosted my ego, resulted in sales and brand deals, I found the short-form shelf life of Tiktok videos damaged my ability and desire to create. Here’s why.

Really nice! Great inspiration- <3
Wow, those drawings were gorgeous
You earned a new sub
Preach thissss. I feel like as artists it's so unhealthy for us to keep up with those who are fed on Brain Rot. We need to normalise slower media, again. Longer videos, released less often. I try to avoid even watching Shorts these days, because it was just dumbing down my brain so badly.
You share a lot of very good thoughts in this . The point about attention and where we spend it is very relatable. That you're making things that are more fulfilling for you certainly makes it more enjoyable for me to watch too. I'm looking forward to seeing more of what you post here!
You are absolutely correct! At least you knew how it felt to have millions of views. The highest amount of views I had was 2200 and from those views a whopping 6 comments! Lol. Very demoralizing. TikTok is far too demanding for too little in return. I just downloaded the videos that I have and I will be closing my account regardless of whether the ban goes through!
I agree - it’s like a hamster wheel! I think it can be far more rewarding to focus just on art for art’s sake - I feel so much less pressure to get views and likes on RUclips, so it frees me up to just draw! And hey, if people like watching, then that’s even better :)
I love watching you work, and as always I'm blown away by the detail!
Thank you so much! It’s great to hear from you!! I hope you’re doing well :)
I'm excited to apply what you've taught in this tutorial.! Your teaching style is very clear and easy to follow.
Thanks so much for the support sir :) always love seeing your art on insta
@samgillettillustrations Happy to! And thank you! Unfortunately, I've stopped posting there due to their training their AI on what folks post, and am searching for an alternative. :)
Impressive!
Love it ❤
It's crazy how typing letters is just like, this letter then that letter and then the next thing you know you have whole words and thoughts typed out! Wild!!
ur so talented!!!
I still have some high school doodles, I was drawing millitary scenes, 2D from the side, tunnels, bunkers, arial combat, slain soilders
Give me directions and maybe I'll get it righ😭🔥
good artstyle, i love ink/paper crosshatching, the dense unidirectional and perpendicular lines scratch brain gooded, same reason i like dithering and halftones
This is so fire, I love this
Isn't it the difference between drawings and sketching?😮
there is no difference
hatching and crosshatching are my mortal enemies i’ll scumble until i die
#crosshatching
Tbh I expected a bit more… xD
Draw the rest of the owl energy 😂
If only it was that simple! You aren't wrong, of course, but only when you know which direction you want to go.
@@DeborahHamilton-q1w you’re very right - this is a pretty simplistic interpretation! I love how art is endlessly complex while at the same time using simple ingredients
Damn it. guess ill save this one too
Love it
This is awesome- love the tutorial! Definitely gonna give this a try.
Thanks for watching!
This is awesome. I'm a beginner and so far, I understood your instructions in your videos! Yay! A lot of videos are over complicated and intimidating, so I'm really grateful for your work! Can you do a video on how to correctly do hatching and how to properly use it? I seem to mess it up pretty much every time! :(
I am so so happy to hear this!! I definitely will do a video on hatching :) thanks so much for your comment - hope you keep drawing!
underrated 🔥
That boat is getting away! Look at the wake and there’s no one manning the ship noooo!
Beautiful! Hoping to see more videos.
Thanks so much - I appreciate it! I'm filming another drawing video this week :)
@ Great! Looking forward to learn more from you. :)
God damn it i guess ill save this for later
Where’s the rigging? What about the other 5 sails? What happened to the mentally unstable drunkards with swords and bandannas?
You have given me so many ideas for boat #2
I hate drawing, but this is amazing
What kind of pen are you using? What would this look like if you sketched with pencils?
That's a great question! I'm making a long-form video where I do just that. This is with a Sakura Micron pen (I think a 0.1)
@ Thank you!
But if the boat is moving foreward that would mean that the wind is coming from behind it. Shouldn’t that top flag be pointing in the opposite direction?
You're very right!
but i dont wannnaaaaa...
This is a REALLY nice Drawing ✍️ of a Boat!🚤
The wood planks on the hull are called ribs.
i really enjoyed the your video! if you were looking for some feedback the text "drawing a reflection" stays on screen a little to long and we can't see what you're drawing in the intro or the pen reflection you're trying to demonstrate, not worth removing the video over, just something to think about for the next one! If you're not looking for feedback then please disregard and have a fantastic day (genuinely)
Thanks for that feedback! I'll definitely keep that in mind for future videos :)
Wow.... Youre videos (that I've seen) have been incredibly concise and not the same boring skills or objects. i hope you keep making more!
Really appreciate that! I’m always looking for new things to draw.
if you suck at drawing boats, become good at drawing. and then you can make good looking boats. this is how i make a good looking boat and youll only really be able to copy this boat if this is all the experience you have :) (sarcastically)
I second this
Ok ok
Nice boat! I do have to say, i felt the video was going faster than your explanation
I appreciate the feedback! The editing got messed up a lil
Thats so cool! u should do comic strips like calvin and hobbes or something.
He mentioned The Far Side in the video too! I always enjoyed that one.
First boat looked better
Lmao
I've just begun my journey with drawing (and drawing in ink at that) and this video is exactly what I've been looking for. Thank you!
I’m so happy to hear that! Hope you continue to enjoy sketching :) many more vids to come!
Thanks mann
You're welcome! Glad it was helpful!
Thanks! Now my friend won’t comment on how cartoony my trees look!
Cartoon trees can sometimes be great!
Cool! It kinda looks like the cabin from slay the princess.
Amazing. This woke up my memories. :) ... When I used to have more time to hike and more time to draw. I didn't miss those times. This just reminded me of those in the best way.
Ah I’m so glad :)
I hope you will make many more of these. I have never been able to draw a landscape before. You made it make so much sense. Thank you!!
Thank you so much for the kind comment! I’m glad this was helpful - I’m planning to do one every other week this year :)
Hey love this video
