My channel features videos and Super 8 films of trains mainly in Queensland, Australia, as well as other states and around the world. The Super 8 films date from the mid 1970s to mid 1980s and the videos continue from then until around the late 1990s.
Steam Train to Paradissia - Greece 1980
In April 1980, the Locomotive Club of Great Britain ran a rail tour of Greece using a variety of steam locomotives resurrected for the tour.
The tour started from Piraeus and included a full loop around the Peloponnese Peninsula metre gauge system using Es7721 2-8-0 and Da7108 2-8-2.
Next was the metre gauge line between Volos and Kalambaka using Jung built 2-6-2T locos Nos 40 and 45.
On the standard gauge, locos used were LB 962 2-10-0 and Thg 525 2-8-0 from Volos to Thessaloniki and from Thessaloniki to Idomeni and return.
A few other trains and tourist sites also appear including the wooden bodied Piraeus Electric Railway.
Copied from my Super 8 film.

Some locations I recognize from my youth: Yeronga (@3:49) Southbank/West End/Centeneary Drive/Brisbane River (@10:40) Electrification @5:00 (hanging up the catenary as the electrification scheme- all these routes are now electrified, I think) Oh my god those alarms are adorably derpy. The way the arms flap about and strike the bell!
9:53 im pretty sure my dad worked on that one ^ :) 1558 ive got a big picture form when he was working up north in the late 60's ealry 70's. Pic is of it going over the burdickin river up north through cane fields. I can upload a pic in my community posts if you want see?..
Wow, what a treat! it's the first time we see a video from that trip. I tok part in that tour (at that time young and innocent...) 🤣🤣 An enormous thanks for posting!
obrigado por compartilhar, nossa muita história envolvida.
Great program Graham
Very good cinematography, thank you.
OMG! My dad driving the 7108! I never thought that i would see a video of him when he was young and how i remember him! Priceless. Is there more unedited footage please?
@@patrasboy21 Sorry but this is all the footage I have although I do have some still images.
@@grahamwatkins9575any chance of seeing the stills please?
Avellaneda , “Provincial Railway “
Super Aufnahmen
excellent images. Is there more from Argentina?
7:43 Alfios river bridge
I noticed in the 70s you could cross the tracks and get away with it. Nowadays you would cop a fine for trespassing
@@MichaelStevens-x1s We knew then to look out for trains and not get run over. A much easier time then.

16:00 I have never seen a Wig Wag like this anywhere. 0r even any type of Wig Wag in Australia. Great film thankyou.
cool l remember that
What a treasure!!!! Thanks for the post!!!!
EXCELLENT!! What a nice surprise!!! The LCGB Steam Tour of 1980 is a myth to all of us, the Greek trainlovers who know it only from photos. Thank you very much for uploading it.. it is a real document....
Klasse Film. Danke für das Einstellen.
That's an amazing document! Thanks for sharing it!
Excellent presentation of the greek railway pride in the 20th century, instead of the shame in the 21rst...
UNBELIEVABLE!!!!
I managed to work out quite a few of the locations. This is a real piece of History. Brisbane was still pretty much a big sleepy town when most of this was shot.
I worked at SBE from '10 to '12 or so. We had an awesome team then. I would look around for any signs of history, other than the station building itself. A few little clues here and there, but otherwise, they did a good job of stripping away 99% of it. When they were getting ready to do the restoration I suggested they put up bill boards on the ConCen side so if you stood on the platforms facing west, you could see how it was on the bill boards. Also pictures in the pedestrian tunnel... I was amazed that it took until then to actually build a bridge across the river to Roma St.
Great footage Graham. Your foresight to record this era is appreciated. Did you venture down the Shorny at all? A few of my colleagues have been there for quite some time and have waxed about shunting etc as station staff. I missed all the fun stuff as it was before my time.
Sorry Andrew but I was a southsider and didn’t venture to the Northside much.
Taken back when Brisbane was a divided hick country town, the only thing that has changed is that it's no longer divided.
Fairfield has really changed since then.
Please take me back to this time...... Brisbane has become an overcrowded multicultural shitshow nowadays
Big memories starting in 1980 travelling from Gailes to South Brisbane or Vulture Street to attend Brisbane State High School. Does anyone know where to find related historical rail records? We "lost" a student that was hit by a train carriage door in the Roma Street tunnel. We both punched-on earlier the day before putting that aside to play rugby together at another school on the Beenleigh line after school then he was never seen again.
I remember going to South Brisbane station.I was going to South Brisbane Tech Colledge where South Bank is now
Wow Graham, this is some of the best QR footage that I have seen from this era! Too have colour and the original sound is very rare indeed and that camera gear of the day was not cheap! Brings back memories of my rail fanning days in Brisbane back in the 80's , when we had decent trains to look at , and such a variety of locos ! As a signal sparky for the last 20 yrs in Brisbane, I missed the golden age of QR and it's all very boring now, so thanks so much for posting these wonderful clips. CHeers Gregg.
Thanks for your comments Gregg. The cost of film was more of a problem back then so clips were no longer than necessary. Not like today where everybody has a HD Video camera in their pockets and the cost of recording is zero so clips are too long before the train appears. The scanning process is a bit hit and miss. Some turn out OK and others not so good with variations in exposure and colour. But for 40-45 year old 8mm film, can't complain too much.
@@grahamwatkins9575 The quality is great for the time Graham! I cut my teeth shooting film stills, and it teaches you a lot about the basics of photography , and how to get a good shot before you push the shutter! Most people today have no clue about depth of field or exposure as the camera does it all? I still use those principles today and it saves me heaps of data and time in post production. Cheers Gregg.
1988 likely the radio was playing 4KQ
Steam locos &;trains in Greece, what a winning combination! Great video. Judging by the smoke though, oil burners…
Both 525 and 962 are(were…) coal burners!
Beauty!
You could feel the sadness from the RM2000 in the background at Nambour :)
Great video!
Another great video!
My favourites ❤
Outstanding, thank you.
Thanks Graham for sharing 😊❤
Them were the days
Nice Job, Graham! Enjoyable viewing.
Excellent footage. I did a quick search and discovered Baddow and Pallas Street were Maryborough (Qld) suburban stations! That whole line to the centre of Maryborough appears to disused now. No sign of either station on streetview unfortunately.
The line from Maryborough West to Maryborough is really just a long siding now to serve the old Walkers Workshops and still sees shunt trains moving EMUs to/from occasionally. Also the Whistlestop Mary Ann steam train operates on the section through the park near the old wharf.
Thank you so much for sharing as this is really helpful as I’m trying to do a model on the Kingaroy train station
Where was the coal train going too and from?
Would most likely have been heading to the Port of Gladstone and probably coming from the coal mines of the central highlands.
Somewhere on the Central Line to Gladstone.
Thanks for sharing Graham, Stewart
Country train? I remember catching one of those old wooden carriages going to the city.
A fascinating film. Thank you very much for sharing 👍
Thanks Graham.
Grew up near the station and work station out west qld 70-80s kids play ground :) we Also had a junction across the road Great old trains, And the old steamer.
