CR Spotless Installed and First Impressions
Made some room on the wall for this much anticipated gear plus my first impressions of using it.
The cold weather has limited my car washing (and the primary use of this device) however, I have found myself using this pure water for many uses around the house for cleaning mirrors and glass but especially running humidifiers at night for my daughters. No white dust is left like it is with water from the tap even going through two gallons a night.

Surely to be one of my favorite additions to the Dad Details garage, the CR Spotless is here! Here I explain the need to have a deionized water filter as well as give you an idea of what it all looks like coming out of the box.
Nokian Hakkapaliitta R3 tires - Initial Thoughts

Is the switch away from Blizzak winter tires going to be worth it? Initial experience says yes but time will tell.
What was 2018 like? What will 2019 bring?

What's the long term on the Nokians?
I didn't know about them until i went into 5 different places asking what was their better set of tired and found a tiny tire shops with this tires nad great prices

Thanks for the review. I had DMV2s on my truck a few years ago and I'm looking at the Nokian's this time around. I too am concerned about running super soft tires on a 5500lb vehicle.
As a dad I agree. NOKIAN tires are great traction. When my wife drives my 2 kids the vehicle must have good tires. Most important part of an automobile. Having the peace of mind is worth the money. Thanks for the review!
I just put those on my range rover, hoping for a drama free winter : )
Nokians R&D is far superior to any other manufacturer for winter performance. Those guys do some crazy stuff in testing
Nokian are great tires, one thing I would recommend is having winter tires on dedicated wheels. If you take tires off the wheel they can be damaged and if there is a mileage warranty they cannot be taken off the original wheels. If one is damaged when you change from summer to winter tires you have to replace the entire set. You could just replace 2 but then you may be unbalanced. I know Michelin has a 40,000 mile warranty on X-Ice Snow but that warranty is voided if you take the tires off the original wheels they were installed on. The world’s best winter tire right now is the Continental VikingContact 7, Nokian, Pirelli and Michelin are very close. Toyo, Hankook and Kumho are in that group as well. Yokohama, Bridgestone, Goodyear, BF Goodrich are not far off. There’s really not a bad choice from any of those. Winter Tires are a great investment. If you have All-Seasons and AWD you are in good shape in most conditions, just not all, so you have to be very careful in extreme conditions, which can happen at any time. Here in Canada we get white-outs where you can’t see anything in front of you, that’s when you want the best vehicle for winter including AWD and Winter tires. You just don’t have enough time to react in a blizzard or driving through black ice..
First and last vieo. IF YOU SAY UM UH AHH UM AHHH UM UM UM AHH UH UM UM UM UM UM UM AHH UH UH UMM UM UM ONE MORE TIME. UM UM UH AHAH UM UM UM
Have 245/35/18 nokian r3's on my wrx, they handle well at higher speed. grip very well on dry, gravel, and snow/ice roads after the break in period. Handle mud amazing. Sidewalls are tough and Hold up well to white rock donuts and the occasional bump on the curb. Not horribly noisy, and they do look really nice.
All snow tires will wear quickly if run in warm weather. Thanks for the review. I'm torn between these or the Blizzack DM-V2 or the Michelin x-ice. These are $50 a tire more. That rubber coming off the side wall is normal and nothing to worry about.
The thread does look bad ass on the Nokian. Just ordered a pair for my Z4 for Chicago winter.
The Nokian Hakkapaliitta series tyres are one of the best winter tyres that you can get. I’ve used them on both my Chrysler 300C 5.7L HEMI and VW Tiguan AWD in Canadian winters. They exceeded my expectations in blizzard conditions, freezing rain and even in dry conditions. I’ve never felt more solidly grounded to the road in winter conditions; and as for tread wear, I’m was able to get 4 Winters with my 300C; and this season will be my 5th Winter with the Tiguan. The difference being that the 300C drives more power to the rear wheels and its a much heavier vehicle than the Tiguan; therefore the tyres wear quicker. Nevertheless, the actual wearing down was much more linear than the previous Michelin and Goodyear tyres I used; and performance never suffered throughout, until the tread had actually reached the limit. As a footnote, I don’t think that it’s fair to compare these to the Michelin Premier LTZ. That’s an all season tyre, whereas the Hakkapaliitta series are all winters.
Please update us on the thread wear
Treadwear is better than I expected.
@@daddetails1868 good news! Cuz i got some hakka 9
Great Review! I have the first gen hakka R since 2011 on my 4Runner and driven it for 39, 303 km based on my record every time I switch tires (ave. 4,367km/season). I still see 4mm mark but I will change these next year with R3s or if whatever is new from Nokians. Totally happy with winter performance and how it wears.
Hi how’s the winter tires?
Blizzak is so overly rated, I am looking forward to the Nokian Hakkapaliitta. Thank you for the review dear Dad Details.
Such an amazing review. I was thinking of same for my Lexus Rx350. Thank you for making it easy to decide. You should make more videos :D
Just bought 4 for my Honda civic. Been using Hankook Ipike rs winter tires for about 5 years now. Hoping my hakkapeliitta r3s will be a significant improvement as they were almost $180.00 more for a set.
How are they doing for you? Thu king about getting them for the civic this winter as wel
@@Pat6l6 best winter tyres in the world you will not regret them and they will save your life in extreme conditions!
It’s Nokian here in Northern Maine . 10 feet of snow in winter with a duration of 6 full months!
@ ...thank you! I was able to order from Walmart .
Great video 👌
What can you say about blizzak dm-v3 ?
I have not owned the DM-V3. I have owned half a dozen DM-V1 or DM-V2s. The initial bite and feel of traction could be better with the Blizzaks when new. However, the performance declines when the top layer of soft rubber compound is worn off. This is what attracts me to Nokian, consistent performance over the life of the tire.
How are they wearing
Wear a year later has been better than expected.
Those look like the R3 SUV, not R3.
D S yes.
I have R'3s on my 2019 Genesis G70 6MT RWD. I live around Ottawa, so we gets lots of snow. I put around 20,000Km's on mine last year. They were awesome all winter long, and I was 4 days short of having them on my vehicle for a full 6 months. Ride noise is basically nil, and they offer low rolling resistance, so they are actually better on gas than my summer tires. They do seem to wear down a bit more than the Michelin Xice (which I've had on 2 vehicles before - and they are guaranteed for 60-80K?), but they are amazing winter tires. Top drawer stuff.
I'll probably be getting the R3s on my 2021 Genesis g80 AWD. I wanted to get the michelins X-snow but they don't make 275/40 R 19.
I had Nokian Hak R3 last year used around 7/32 thread and they worked great on my RWD BMW 335is. Picked up a new set this year. What I heard from Blizzaks were that as thread is used they don't stay good but on the Nokians they have "cryo crystals" or whatever that is in the wole thread, not just the start of it, so it stays good mostly until you hit the replace mark.
most manufacturers use all-season tread up to 4/32”, from 4 - 13/32” it’s a winter tire compound which wears faster. It’s actually dangerous to be driving on a winter tire compound like Blizzaks past 6/32”. What I’ve heard is 5/32” is the mark you need to replace for safety, that’s why dealers and shops measure above or below 6/32”. If you are below it’s recommended to replace immediately. Michelin has put a lot of research into it and found a way to create a soft compound that will last beyond 40,000 miles, Toyo has one that uses walnuts and carbon to stay soft in extreme cold and last a long time, so you may see more manufacturers recommend closer to 2/32” in the future but at this point below 6/32” is still dangerous so the question remains - how much mileage will you get out of a set of tires between about 10/32” and 5”32”? Nokian provides a 5-year warranty but no mileage warranty on winter tires, they do provide a mileage warranty for all-seasons, up to 70,000. Michelin is the 1st one to offer a mileage warranty on winter tires.
Hakkapeliitta 9 would be even better for that SUV.
I have them on my explorer.I went with the factory studs because they are legal in nova scotia
Perhaps, but I have not regretted the R3 on it.
Nice review... thanks! I have a 2015 Acura MDX AWD and am thinking about getting a set of these R3s for the coming winter. I have factory 19in wheels and tires on the vehicle now. I'm going to downsize to a 17in wheel and tire for my MDX. That will have two benefits... It will cost less for the wheels and tires. Plus, the 17in tires should be somewhat more narrow than the factory 19in. and thus should cut through the snow better.
Going to try the R3 this winter with the new Rav 4 AWD, hope I will be satisfied, thank's for the excellent review Sylvain, Québec
Bon Pecheur how do you like the r3’s ?? I’m picking up my rav4 in a few weeks
How did they work out non? I have a 2021 rav4 and was going g to get theses but wanted to see how you liked them
@@Whoknows12334 It's a really good set of tires , you will feel confident driving with those . Good traction and not too noisy on the road .
Hey Dad details, how is your experience now? How did the thread, would you still recommend these over Bridgestone DMV2 or Yokohamas ?
Puneet Dhanjal I plan on buying these after my DMV2’s are done on my truck. I haven’t put them on yet this season to provide more feedback
I spent a lot on these tires. I ran them last winter and I was not impressed. In fact, I don't plan on running them again. It's unfortunate because the tire guy said they were a top pick , but I used to have Michelin X-Ice 2's and I always felt confident driving in winter with those. With the Nokian's I feared getting stuck on snow covered dirt roads and did once. It took about 10 minutes to get out. Pissed I spent about a grand on these damn tires.
Can't really blame getting stuck on the tires. What kind of vehicle you had them on?
@@oswaldgobblepot A Ford Fusion. When I had the X-Ice on two winters ago I always felt confident in winter. R3's didn't impress me. I really wanted to like these tires too. Even the lower tier Cooper Snowtrakkers(?) I had on my old Plymouth Breeze beater (work travel car til it died) gripped better.
@@rfi-cryptolab4251 seems alot of people really like them over the michellins.
I appreciate your feedback. I have no experience on the Michelin Ice X. I do however, love the Defender LTX for my non-winter tires. The initial bite grip on these is less than the blizzak however that blizzak bite diminishes with wear in the top 50% of tread. I’m still satisfied with the Nokians, another winter on them will help solidify my stance long-term
@@daddetails1868 I'm thinking of buying tire chains for when I have to go down back roads this winter. This Fusion sits a little lower than my last Fusion and it bogs down more in deeper snow. That might be the problem.
It is awesome to see a Denver RUclipsr! Thanks for the great video. I’m getting these for my truck.
I tried your y-splitter idea - only problem I've seen (just installed it) is that when taking the quick disconnect from the outlet of the CR to then connect it to the tap that uses non DI water - there is a TON of water that comes out of the DI outlet. What do you do to keep all that water run off contained?
I had the same issue. I added a garden hose ball valve on the DI outlet and my set up is now less messy to make the change over. Be sure to let the water pressure out of the end of the garden hose first before disconnecting at the DI outlet.
@@daddetails1868 I fixed it. I added another valve after the outlet of the DI with quick disconnect after the valve. So now I purge the water/pressure from the gun/DI, but not fully and then shut the valve. Problem solved! Thanks again for your video!
Had first hand experience with the Blizzaks and Hakkapaliitta's over in Aomori, Japan (one of the if not thee most snowiest place on Earth) on a Honda CR-V. The Nokians handled like a snowmobile, I was able to take curves and bends at speed. Stopping was great and the wear & gas mileage weren't too bad either. The Nokians were far superior over the Blizzaks, held up very well in ice and rain also.
Thank you. This comparison is exactly what I've been looking for.
Nokian is far better than Bridgestone, from my own experience.
Which Nokian? You do know they make more than one snow tire model?
Hi, how would you compare this with the Blizzak performance wise on ice and snow?
With more time on the tire now I’d say these have better overall grip and comfort than the Blizzak DMV1 and 2. Especially when the tires break traction and then claw to regain traction. The Blizzaks have excellent initial bite though. I’ll be replacing my Blizzaks on my truck with these when the time comes.
andyrock had blizzaks on a 94 civic hatchback.... had to try multiple times to climb up a consistent incline with ice and snow Hakkas rn on a 98 corolla went up a steep alley hill with same condition no problem nearly. If you don’t need to drive on hills Michelin x-ice3 or cross climate is perfect. Only problems I’ve heard from xice is slush and completely ice covered.
I’m very interested in knowing if they can handle rain and how it does in rain. Does it hold its grip on corners in rain or dry roads. We’ve had more than a foot of snow in the Seattle area and much rain. Expecting more snow soon. I have an appointment with discount tire in 4 days and to put these on....or decide to get something else.
chris corbray I’d say you’d be good with the rain and snow you are experiencing. A lot of design and testing went into this tread pattern for snow and ice but any water I have experienced has been well sorted by the tire.
Just put them on, absolutely phenomenal, defies the laws of physics I swear! Everyone with all seasons on the west coast is scary tho.
Updates?
2000 miles on them and no issues or signs of premature wear. Smooth ride and winter traction are still my favorite parts of the tire.
That was a pretty good test. I haven’t looked into the CR Spotless systems a ton, but it was cool seeing a real world test of pulling it back into the garage and not drying it at all. That’s one of the pains when I’m detailing is trying to get everything perfectly dry before continuing on to the next phase. With something like that I could theoretically rinse and dry it off with a blower, then let it air dry over night before I start polishing the next day.
The big issues I have are the hard water and the very dry climate. Immediately the car starts drying (especially in the warm months) during a wash and it has been a pain for years to dry it quickly but yet not leave towel marks. I’m confident this will help! Maybe it can for you too.
Very cool setup!! Can’t wait to see it being used!!
SteveO The Window Cleaner I love this thing! I’ll have several videos I’m sure
David, thanks for sharing. In our brief conversations last year, I kind of sensed you were a man in flux. Here's to a bigger and better 2019! As far as editing software, what did you end up going with? I personally transitioned to FCPX because of the easy transition from iMovie.
Thanks Chris, you are an intuitive dude to sense that. iMovie was a temporary fix for this video. However, I signed up with Rush CC from Adobe and have enjoyed playing around with it. I like the idea of doing all my edits from my phone with integration to share to YT. As I need it I can upgrade to more advanced software within the Adobe suite.
2019 is a new year filled with new everything. Congrats on starting your channel, sharing your story and bringing us along with you!
tim - thanks for your support
Just suscribed! Excited. Make a video of your Sunjoe Setup! I need to make some mods to that pressure washer.. hose.. gun.. etc.
this is great...I was actually going to call you to find out what your recommendations would be regarding clay bar products and then if you preferred waxing your car or doing a ceramic coating.
Give me a ring and we can chat. I will be doing a paint decontamination video and paint protection at some point.
Excited to see what you think of the Hakkapeliitta R3s. I had a set on order for my car but just found out that they were on a 90 day backorder so I ended up with X-Ice Xi3s.
Great tires so far, stay tuned!
