Wrecked'em Motorcycles Bike Projects by Phil Baker
Великобритания
Добавлен 21 июл 2020
This Channel started out about the building of my XS1100 Trike,
which was bought part built in 2019.
However, with the lockdown and the music industry in which I work both on and off stage in meltdown, I’ve resurrected my motorcycle business name from the 90’s and have started buying a few bikes for restoration and repair. Anything interesting I’ll do a few Vlogs for but for the next few months I will be focusing on the Trike, The Norton Navigator and the Honda GL1100.

Although the GL1100 had been come from the USA and all fuel should have been taken out before shipping I thought I'd check the tank and I'm glad I did. What was in the bottom of the tank is really bad.

A quick video of what I've done with the head stock steering stem. Please bear with me for a proper full video of where we are up to. Just takes a while to edit. Hope this helps though.
Replacing the Sealed Beam Headlamp
Просмотров 5910 месяцев назад
I've been so busy lately just did a quick update on my phone changing the Head Lamp sealed Beam on the GL. The head lamp needs changing to a Right Hand drive ie driving on the left hand side of the road from a Lwft Hand drive head Lamp ie driving on the right hand side of the road. Hoping to have some more detailed videos coming soon.

Love those old XS. Halfway thru was thinking, wheres the goldie? Question answered. All the best bruv
Hi Mate, Yes I'm finding it increasingly difficult to try and finish anything. Goldie running but it's not right. Going to try and look at it next weekend once I've finished something else :-) oh and I'm still trying to finish the bloody book too :-)
Always used acetone and tranny fluid to unstick pistons,,let set for overnight, usually works
If I understand correctly, this is the motor from the newly acquired GL. Will you be doing more videos on the original motor that you stripped down? I am hoping to learn if the motor was salvageable and how you addressed the rust in the cylinders. It would also be helpful to see the reassembly. Thanks!
Hi There, Sorry for not replying any earlier, I mossed the mail telling me your comment was there. I think I mentioned it in another video but unfortunately it was going to cost too much money to rebuild the other engine. It wasn't just the pistons, however I will do a video at some stage to show items like getting rid of the rust in the cylinders etc. Sorry there isn't more information at the moment. This is only a part time thing with the video's and I'm flat out with other work too. But thanks for watching and I hope I can answer some of your questions in the future.
Thanks for making these videos. I am preparing to disassemble a 79 GL1000 motor, but I haven’t been able to find any relevant videos. I believe the GL1000 and GL1100 are essentially the same motor, but the 1100 has a slightly larger bore.
Great video and very helpful!
Need help put new head gaskets on my gl1000 76 model,on putting on camshaft on left hand side manual says there should be free movement ,when I put the rocker bolts on their is no free play on tightening them, the right hand camshaft went in fine, the bike is on TDC,have I missed something on compression ?😊
I sold my 1979 gl1000 and 83 gl1100 to my cousin Billy Baker… Good job on your gl1100 👌
Thanks for the message and sorry for the late reply.
God I’ve been dreading this moment but it has to be done 😂
Especially when it’s just me removing it 😂
I appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge about Norton motor bikes. And to attempt to rebuild this old bike. In my up bringing in the U.S.A. most people don’t hear about this Norton brand. Thank you for sharing!
Thankyou MikenElaine I'm hoping to start getting the engine back together in the next month or so, just so busy with other work at the moment :-)
Well done fellas....well done.
Thankyou hope it helps
I love the intro-music!👍
Thanks glad you like it it’s the first track of my second album I’m working on the songs called Stardust and there’s a full version on my Bandcamp page 😊
Good day to you! I’m watching from Southern California. I’m interested in your videos because I also have a GL 1100A. Thank you for sharing this video!
My pleasure more to come 😊
I bought a Navigator with a stuck engine in 1972 but didn t have the skills to fix it . I always wanted to know how. Thanks Phil. Great job
Thanks Anthony glad it's helped with your project
My first bike in 1970 bought it for 30 quid cos it looked a 500
Hi great video's you guys make! right now i'm busy with my GL1100 engine and was wondering where you ordered the special tool.
Hi Bash sorry for the late reply I didn't see this message. Which special tool are you talking about as I think I used a few on stripping this engine?
Doesn't the workshop manual tell you what to do .?
Hi David unfortunately there are no workshop manuals eg Haynes etc for the Lightweight Nortons. I got some photo copies from National Motorcycle Museum of an old workshop manual from 60's and also information from Norton Owners club whom I'm a member of.
Really enjoyable video. Very minor grouch, the music was much louder than the commentary so I had to keep adjusting the volume. Thank you for making the vid though. Cheers
Hi Arthur, thanks for the feedback and glad you enjoyed it. This was one of the first video's I did and have made the music a little quieter on the rest 🙂 I hope you enjoy the rest. I will have an update on the rebuild very soon too.
good vidio . are you guys still taking questions on this? i have to do the started, like the second stage, after the chain, not just on the side of the motor. im wondering if i can do it without pulling the motor?
Hi Andrew glad you like the video. I assume your talking about the starter clutch that you need to replace? Yes, We're still taking questions about all the video's I've just been that busy over the last 6 months that I haven't had a chance to carry on renovating the bikes, but I will have a video out in the next few days.
Hi Andrew, If you look at GL1100 Vlog 3 around 5mins in you'll see that the starter clutch is on the back of the rotor, and I think you will definitely have to take the engine out to get at both the starter clutch and the chain as the whole back casing needs to come off even if you leave the clutch in place. Hope this helps.
Yes that's what I was afraid of. Thank you
@@red3376 Sorry mate. Did you look at the other video taking the rear casing off? You can leave the clutch in situ.
Hai saya ingin tahu berapa ukuran bearing crankshaft kiri dan kanan jubille? Dan berapa ukuran pen piston nya?🙏
Thanks for the information it was very helpful, good work.
Our pleasure 😊
Phil I am in South Africa and am splitting my Norton Navigator engine. I have seen the original vlog (assessing the engine) but cannot find the No 2, No 3 and No 4. Would you mind replying with the links please! Great videos!
Hi David, The assessing the engine is Vlog 2 I'll send you the links to 3, 4,5 and I think there might be a 6th. I'm hoping to get the new cam bushes back soon and then start rebuilding the engine. I'll see which is the best way to send the links but most probably easier to send each link. Not sure why you can't see them on my site.

ruclips.net/video/9IgHp5m3wyM/видео.html Vlog 4
ruclips.net/video/hc5giKh892U/видео.html On this vlog there are a couple of things that I was corrected on quite rightly. I can give you the contact of the Norton Owners club Lightweight Tech if you need it. I've had many conversations with him over the past year or so and is a great help.
You must replace those pistons! The early versions have long openings right through the oil ring grooves, and as mine did will fail at the large slot by the gudgeon pin hole. The result was a cracked cylinder lining and all bearings ruined because of all the metal debris. The updated pistons have circular holes drilled through the oil ring groove instead of the slot.
Hi Derek thanks for the advice, I'll be looking at buying the rings etc soon so I will look at the pistons too. Sorry it's taken so long to reply.
Make sure you change the pistons! The ones you have will fail because of the long opening in the oil ring groove. That is what happened to mine. The replacements have circular holes through the oil ring groove.
Thanks for the heads up Derek I’ll talk to Andy at Norton Owners who is the lightweight tech guy too because that’s never come up in conversation
Hi there it’s going to get put back on the road. I have Jubilee a donor for seat, tank etc. as for HP I’ll check specs later and get back to you
hey how much HP will the navigator put out? is this going back to original for the road or built for track?
Hi SUPERROOSTMATT and thanks for the subscription too. The Navi has a massive 22HP 🙂It increased from the 250 Jubilee to 350cc and had the frame and had the new at the time Roadholder forks and a bigger hub on the wheel I assume to give it greater braking capacity. You had to be revving at 7000rpm to get 22hp out of it though 🙂
Way ta persevere and getting the block apart, very nice that the cylinder walls weren't badly damaged same with the pistons, u guys got lucky
yes we were. hopefully I’ll be able to get back on this project in the next few weeks. there’s a lot of other stuff like the primary chain needs replacing which I don’t think helped with trying to turn the engine by handAll the best for the new year too
The other thing to do if a piston is all the way down is to hone the rust from the cylinder wall before trying to get the piston out
Thanks for the info Edward and yes that’s a great idea however we were trying to move the pistons downwards as the casing was moving upwards so it was difficult to be able to try a d clean anything out and at the time I didn’t know why the engine was seized. I’m hoping to have this channel producing videos again very soon I’m just in the process of sorting out a bike for a mate which seems to be taking a lot longer than expected. I wish you and everyone else for that matter a very merry Xmas and a Happy New Year take care
If anyone else is in this position, try pouring vinegar down the bores for a day or 2, cleans out the corrosion/rust
hi do have parts for sale now looking for some norton jubilee 350cc
Hi Adrian what are you looking for? Where are you based?
told a co-worker , about my BSA unit singles , he wants me to buy his Jubilee . Any advice regarding , increased engine power ? performance camshaft profiles ?
@@blairlindsay5791 Hi Blair, I’m not sure about increased engine power or performance camshafts for the Jubilee or Navigator. I’m a member of Norton owners club so I can ask the question. I’m still waiting on getting my new camshaft bushes back from the engineers as mine were elongated, so would lose performance/timing etc. Until I get these back ( no one seems to sell them so I’m having to get them made) I can’t start rebuilding the engine. I’m hoping I’ll be able to do a new Vlog soon with starting to rebuild the engine 😊
Why do you need to drain the oil?. I must replace the alternator.
Hi Jeroen, and thanks for the question. We drained the oil for 2 reasons. Firstly because we were going to strip the engine it was easier to drain the oil with the engine in the bike and secondly without the oil in the engine would be a little lighter to lift onto the bench.hope that’s answers the question.
@@wreckedemmotorcyclesbikepr8097 thanks voor the reply. Ok i only must replace the alternator 👍🏻
Is it required to remove the driveshaft, or is it just disconnect it and leave the axle and rear tire in place?
@@Jeroen-83 hi Jeroen I will check tomorrow for you when I’m at the workshop
Hi Jeroen, Have you tested the Alternator/Stator already to make sure that’s the problem and checked the regulator/rectifier too. I can send details re checking the Alternator and there is a full video in the XS1100 trike on how to test the regulator/rectifier. If you need to take the alternator/stator out I think it may be possible to extract it while the engine is in the frame but could be quite difficult to do due to trying to get tools into the rear of the engine next to the frame. The initial test is a multimeter over the battery. With the bike warmed up and running at 3000rpm you should get 14.5volts and 3amps. You should have the headlight on main beam and preferably the battery fully charged. You can email me direct for more in depth information if required too.
I’ve just added a link to a video off my phone re Jerry’s question about snap ring pliers
ruclips.net/video/J4aiKrIu_Ms/видео.html
Made any progress since ..???
Hi Jerry at present I’m trying to sort out a custom bandit for a friend of mine was building and unfortunately has been diagnosed with cancer so my spare time over the past few months has been trying to sort his bike out as he was building it for someone else. I really need to get on with the trike but mates come first😊
Do you have a pic of your snap ring pliers to get that jet out of the center of the diaphram... I've tried several types of pliers...nothing is slender and long enough to get down in there to release that clip ...
Hi Jerry thanks for the message. I’m up at the workshop at some stage over the next few days I’ll get a photo for you or dig a stock photo out for you. I’m actually having self isolate at the moment so can only go there when there’s no one there 😳
Hi Jerry have you tried a set of these they go to 130mm depth www.amazon.co.uk/Internal-Cylinder-Snap-Ring-Plier/dp/B082XNRKX3/ref=asc_df_B082XNRKX3/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=394344100493&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=596343231298182737&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1006972&hvtargid=pla-860303851390&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=82243840552&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=394344100493&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=596343231298182737&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1006972&hvtargid=pla-860303851390
These only go to 50mm and I’m not sure how deep the circlip is without getting up to the container. There will be longer ones available. As I said I’m not up there at the moment. Do you need to take the needle out as it’s only for adjustment?
Hi Jerry what’s the reason for having to take the needle out of the diaphragm? Normally unless they’re bent or you have to change the position the needles shouldn’t have to come out at all
Hi Jerry those snap ring pliers link work fine, they are the ones I have I wii add a small video onto this channel when I get back home but they work
Sorry for the delay on new posts with this build. I’ll be posting a Vlog hopefully this week on main bearings, difference between Jubilee and Navigator Crank Shafts and a bit more. Although I have purchased the main bearings and with discussions with Norton owners Club the drive side is a discussion in itself. All will be revealed soon.
Agree with Anna - its much easier to remove the barrels with the studs out first. Its amazing how much stiction they cause.
Navigator crankshaft is different from jubilee giving a longer stroke so are not interchangeable !
Hi there thanks for the comment, I realised I hadn’t said that in the original video so added a tag in the video to an additional video. The Navigator crank is much heavier/beefier but the stroke off the crank according to Norton Owners Club is the same but the conrods are shorter. However I will check with the main technician for the lightweights at Norton Owners Club. Standby 😊
Hi there, I sta d corr3cted you are right the strokes are different between the Jubilee and the Navigator cranks aswell as the crank itself being meatier. I apologise for the confusion.
The prisons in my engine are +30 don’t think it has never run. The engine is only half striped.
Hi Alan is it going back together ok?
I have just got a Norton jubilee.
Hi Alan thanks for messaging, is it on the road or is it a project you’ll be restoring?
I love the level of detail to your videos guys. What a battle that was!
Thanks mate. As I say in the video this was a seized engine and I’m sure if everything was free the casing would just pop off ha ha😊 you see loads of videos with mega tidy workshops etc. I’m sure a lot of bikers only have a limited amount of space like us and not every specialist tool in the world 😊 I’m glad there’s enthusiasts like yourself who appreciate what we’re doing. Happy New Year to you Tony and I’ll be trying to sort out some more soon. I haven’t forgotten the neutral switch 😊 cheers
Hi Tony how did you get on with the neutral switch?
@@wreckedemmotorcyclesbikepr8097 funny you should ask, it was this weekends job. I went out there yesterday and tried firing the bike up. The cold nights have done the lead/ acid in. The battery is on charge now in the shed. Ill fit it again next weekend and have a go. Thanks for asking though :-)
@@tonyk6172 No problem Tony hope the batteries ok too. I have a Vmax I was riding over the summer/autumn that's the same. I need to sort it out next weekend as it's due for an MOT mid February.
I'm taking a motor out of my 1979 gl1000 I knew I did not have to take every thing off the whole bike. this other guy on RUclips made it look like I had to disassemble the whole bike he took the rear tire off and the whole front end off what a waste. You made it look easier. Thanks a lot this is the best video on youtube to show how to take out the motor of a gl1000. And it only took me 15 minutes to learn how to take a motor out. The old shool way would be to take a class at school and spend a waste of time and money 15 minutes class. THANKYOU!!!!:)
Hi Bottel Esto I’m glad this is helping you and other people too. It’s nice to have some feedback knowing we are doing something right 😊 take care just uploaded the next one 30/12/20
Great Video Phil. My neutral light comes on every time i pull the clutch, the switch is hidden behind a part of frame on the right hand side. Seeing this engine out process i might live with it :-)
Thanks for the comments Tony. Have you checked out the micro switch on the lever. I can have a look at the neutral switch on the engine and see how easy it is to work on, or how hard 😊
Hi Tony I haven’t checked for you yet mate. We spent that long splitting the cases I forgot🤪 I’ll check next time I’m in the container 😊
@@wreckedemmotorcyclesbikepr8097 Thanks Phil , it looks almost like it needs a special tool
Hi Tony I’ve had a look at the neutral switch and yes you’re right it’s right hand exhaust off engine mounting bolt off, drain the oil etc. I have taken a picture and once I work out how to upload just a pic on the channel I’ll post it, however make sure it’s that that’s faulty. Easy to do. Get a multi meter set to Continuity make sure the bikes in neutral and the screw in the centre of the switch put one probe and the other probe to Earth doesn’t matter which way around the probes are. You should have continuity. Put it in gear making sure the neutral light is out and you shouldn’t have continuity. If all that is ok it’s not the switch. Hope that helps. With the neutral light being off until you pull the clutch in suggests it might be something else as if it’s in gear you have to pull the clutch in to start anyway. Let me know how you get on. Send me an email.Happy new year by the way .
@@wreckedemmotorcyclesbikepr8097 Phil, thank you so much. you diagnosed correctly. The neutral switch tested fine, then like you said, I checked the clutch lever switch and that turned out to be the cause, A nice £7, 10 minute fix. Top man !
very nice sir ..but plz do alot of viedeos when u open the engine from A to Z ... From Germany many thx
Just editing the next video and hopefully have that on here at the weekend 6th or 7th November 😊
Can you help me with mine lol
you need totake the studs out is the easy way to get the barrel off
Hi Anna and thanks for your advice. I got the barrels off with the studs intact, so all good 😊
@@wreckedemmotorcyclesbikepr8097 well i am rebuilding a norton navigaor as well the umteenth motorcycle I rebuilt and two were Nortons heavy twins one very rare one as there only 12 in the country as these were build of export only and not many were built like them the prototype 650 Norton Manxman built in late 1960
All that electrical stuff is chinesium to me, but i like following, and some handlings, i do understand ;-) If you need wooden ornaments for your trike, let me know, i have a diy cnc router, who knows what we can come up with ;-) Keep vlogging mate Staf
